Unbelievable! This recording-made before the invention of tape, being an unedited live performance-gives us a clear idea of some of the greatest cello playing of the time and is obviously and, to my mind, sadly, very different from today’s. Musical concepts transcend physical means, far from being dictated by technical possibilities. “Full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes” becomes “full speed ahead and damn the notes.” Maréchal’s resulting gestures, slow or fast, are magical, but it’s up to Casadessus to accommodate in a way that very few top-flight pianists today are willing to do. I find that, by comparison, most “star” performances today are inoffensive compromises.

I couldn't agree more. And his is best sound that I ever heard from a cellist. This wonderfully slow bow speed makes it!
