Maurice Nicoll : on being sealed against life : the need for hermetic sealing 🎁

Hello ,
a very warm welcome on this enchanted November evening here in London Town.
Maurice Nicoll 1884 Kelso , Scotland
1953 Great Amwell , England.
Nicoll was an eminent neurosurgeon and psychiatrist and noted fourth way esoteric teacher.
In 1921 he met P.D. Ouspensky in London.
And six months later he was introduced to George Gurdjieff at one of his London meetings. A few months later he sold his Harley Street practise and went to work with Gurdjieff at the study center in Fountainbleau. Dedicating his life to "the work".
He is mainly know for his stupendous five volume work , The commentaries on the teaching of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky.

When Nicoll first met Ouspensky in London in 1921 he took him to a private meeting held by Gurdjieff a few weeks later. Nicoll said that he had discovered the most beautiful thing in the world when he attended the meeting and saw Gurdjieff speak. He also said that what he had discovered was the pearl of great price incarnate. He then sold his medical practise and set sail for Fontainbleau. This tale has echoes of Ouspensky coming across an article in a newspaper advertising a ballet that particular evening , namely the struggle of the magicians. And my intuition tells me it's happening all over again. But who is Nicoll and Ouspensky this time around?!

"Do not take the mud that is on your shoes and rub it in your eyes". Maurice Nicoll. But , alas and woe , this is what we are doing all the time , unconsciously. But we needn't. As Ouspensky said after meeting Gurdjieff for the first time , " I knew that there was a way out , and now I've found it". "When Odysseus landed on the Island of Circe he was given a magic herb (perhaps aconite ) by Hermes which protected him against her enchantment ". From the above reading. Our five senses are enchanted by the things of the world. And this enchantment / hypnotism prevents us from doing the work and evolving. The work is the magic herb which frees us from this hypnotic enchantment. As long as we DO it.

I read long time ago that The Mayan initiates used to carry out a device hanging on their necks ( a skull..not totally sure) that helped them to remain vigilant from the amusement of Life..

My Memento mori is that superb one from chapter 47 of Beelzebub's tales to his grandson , in which he suggests an organ be placed at the base of people's spines so that they will never forget that they are going to die , and everyone whom their eyes alight on is also going to die , and this would be the method used to uproot that maleficent tendency they have to hate others and be consumed by their egos. I consider that chapter a work of objective art , as is the whole of Beelzebub's tales. I've put a link above to a talk and reading I gave from that chapter. It really does shed light on the whole thing. And imbues a much needed humanity

Sorry Mr. Nicholl, as a student of the Fourth Way I can see the Work still hasn't taken hold. It has become fragmented and hidden because of Egos barely hanging on to the thread. People can't even comprehend the foot tool or even know what a hermetic vessel is let alone build their ark.The powers that run the world keep them learning about who's having sex with who in Hollywood and focusing solely on petty wants of the individual. Impartiality and sensing is lost in an age where being offended by the smallest thing is promoted. But thank you. I know it was a blessing from God that you and the other pioneers of the fourth way where placed in this timeline. The .00001% of the world thanks you for your service to the Work.🙏

Funnily enough , tonight I was talking about just how dumbed down society has become over the last few decades , to the point of idiocy , and the stark contrast between the high intelligence , perception , and sensitivity of those involved in the work when Mr. Gurdjieff was alive. As we know , a magnetic center is necessary for one to come under the radar of the work (I only read last night that Mr. Ouspensky's work with his meetings and group was founded on this principle : that people were not allowed into the work and would not gain admittance to him unless it was certain that they had a fully developed magnetic center , so as to avoid time being wasted) but also , a very high level of intelligence as otherwise A. It falls on deaf ears , or B , it is misunderstood and wrongly transmitted. There is a superb article by Annie Lou Staveley about what the work is really about and who will benefit from it. We are currently not conscious according to the work and do not have the ability to "do." Therefore we are under the law of accident whereby everything that befalls us is not directed consciously by us. I , e , it just happens. Once conscious Will is developed one is able to "do." And as Gurdjieff once said , "there is only one kind of magic , and that is doing." Also , "with conscious wish anything is possible." All the best , Noel

The big machine of life runs on auto-pilot so we need to be hermetically sealed to prevent our inner life constantly reacting emotionally to these automatic happenings. The law of accident does mean things can go in different ways, so not sure that things in life happen the only way they can happen? They might go this way or they might go that way, but not a fixed process?@@hermesnoelthefourthway

@@gerzycookson5229 The hermetic sealing from non-work influence A stuff brings one so close to the work. And different things happen , which wouldn't happen without the sealing. Jesus Christ has a great quote about this in the gospel of John , "Be in the world , but not of it."

This comes after experiences that fall into the strongest draw on my attention which if I wasn’t a certain unwell would have me down .I guess there is a reason for this trouble. It stops the mad dash calling me away into a darkness that looks desirable at first.

I'm very glad that you are aware of this. Therefore, you can prevent the "mad dash calling you into darkness.' I'm an only child and grew up in a very remote environment in the mountains in the English lake district (I'll send you the video about that , as a link here ) and I've always been aware of sealing oneself from negative external influences. Hi gerzy , Two words : nothing there. And by realizing the following saying by Nicoll : "when you realize that life will give you nothing , and the work will give you everything , if you begin to do it." For years I've avoided things and people not directly connected to the work. This helps greatly. Gurdjieff goes so far as to say , "Either be with those on the same level as yourself , or better still , those on a higher level." In the teaching , influence A things are seen as means whereby one feeds the moon (the emotions expressed on them) When you realize this , and see it , you want nothing more to do with them. Unfortunately , most esoteric teaching and ideas (organised religion being a perfect example) become so entangled in influence A life that they are rendered useless

I absolutely adore Maurice Nicoll. First discovered him within about six months after being introduced to the work by Michael. And , he's been my shining lighthouse of happiness and confirmation in times of great shipwreck and mayhem ✨️ 💛 (the work never fails ) If anyone was ever singled out to transmit this beautiful work , it was Maurice Nicoll. Imagine being a fly on the wall when he and Ouspensky were sitting together discussing the work ! Nicoll wrote a volume of the commentaries from a house called Birdlip in The Cotswolds in Gloucestershire. I went there about twenty years ago , armed with volume three of the commentaries. I took a few Wiltshire ham and English mustard sarnies (sandwiches) and a flask of darjeeling tea with me , just to be on the safe side 🥪 His presence is still there. The magic lift as he called it . He referred to the fourth way as a magic lift (elevator) in which we just have to enter in order to ascend to an infinitely better world.
