Finnish Christmas songs are beautiful in their sadness. You instantly know if something is imported if it's happy.

Sylvia is a type of small migratory bird that nests in the north during summer and migrates to the Mediterranean region for winter. It's incredible to think the same birds we here in Finland just as you in Italy experience as so familiar and local, are actually natural born travellers who have their homes in both countries. In this song one such bird is caged, its cries have gone silent. The poet calls it his singer and wonders if anyone remembers its sorrows. He then shifts to describing the incredibly charming Sicily. The poet asks the brightest of stars to shine on and bless his home country. He describes his love for his homeland and says the song of Sylvia rings with gratitude for Finland and will never cease to be the most melodic tune. Very national romantic, but I take it to mean he is conflicted in his emotions. He has everything he needs in Sicily, yet his heart longs for home especially in Christmas time. His heart is the caged bird and it seems he's caged himself. fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustap%C3%A4%C3%A4kerttu

I went to see the Raskasta Joulua concert in Helsinki just the other day. It was amazing as always. Unfortunately Ari Koivunen was not part of it this year. At least got to see Marko Hietala, who sang Sylvian Joululaulu

The Sylvia is a bird family with several species. One Sylvia bird was kept in a cage in Italy (not so uncommon phenomena in some countries) and wanted to be free.

The original poem was written in Italy, while Topelius was homesick during the Christmas time. That is why it mentions the cypresses and the Etna.

The quitarist, Tuomas Wäinölä really is something great. He's a session quitarist who's played with many top artists in Finland. He plays with Marko Hietala on his solo tours and on record. This video is part of Raskasta Joulua-project (Heavy Christmas) that is having it's 20th anniversary tour in Finland right now. Tuomas Wäinölä is still playing in Raskasta Joulua and it was a pleasure to listen to him play amazing quitar solos last Friday here in Oulu 🎸🎸🎸🤘🤘🤘. Marko Hietala is also part of that project, and many more great metal artists from Finland, plus some foreign stars aswell.

Like people in the comments have said, you can think of it as the poets longing for their homeland. But there's also a darker reason why he is mentioning the migrating bird. Apparently they used to hunt these birds in Italy for their tongues. And the way they hunted them was especially cruel. One bird was caged and blinded to lure the others when it would sing. That's why the song mentions how the wails have quieted down and how the bird is longing back home to Finland. I myself have thought that it's another bird in a tree that's singing the song, not the poet themselves. The love for the homeland in the song also implies to the wishes of Finland being independent.

Christmass songs around the world are jolly and happy. Finnish Christmas songs are just sad and gloomy. Unless it's Juice Leskinen - Sika. That is freaking funny

This song was stolen and re-lyriced, like the other song before 90's. Most famous is the "Olen Suomalainen", that is "L'italiano". There was time when I was a child, and I remember most of the music producers got sued for stealing songs around the world.
