Ah, the Mauser 98. This is one of my personal all time favorites and I was happy to finally take it to the run and gun course. The Mauser's action is still in production, and if you own a bolt action rifle (no matter how modern) it is most likely a derivative of the 98. This gun was Mauser's masterpiece, but lets see her in action!

Fun fact: Mauser made the United States pay them royalties. The Springfield used an unlicensed Mauser patent stripper clip and extractor copy, and the United States was forced to pay the royalties to keep it out of court. The settlement was 75 cents per rifle until $200,000 was paid to Mauser. Today, that would be worth about 8 million.

+TFB TV Hi there love your vids, I did a quick bit of reading and read that there are 3 main bolt action types being the Mauser, Lee Enfield and Mosin. Would you consider doing or have you already done a video explaining the differences between the 3 and any other types you think are worth adding in?

I just picked up a K98 late production gun that's numbers matching but had a duffel cut stock. I repaired the stock and shot it, it held fine, but it is one of the nicest rifles I've owned as far as milsurp (had a 1916 Gewehr 98 I wish I still owned). The K98 and the Gewehr 98 may only be bolt action rifles, but in the right hands can put some rounds down range in a hurry.

One of my favorites is my Israeli K98 I picked up a few years ago. I've always heard collectors say "if only this rifle could talk" mine would probably have a bad case of multiple personality disorder. The receiver is an FN one, made for Israel but other parts of it are German and one or two Czech made ones. I believe the floor plate came off a GEW 98 and the bolt body may have been from a VZ-24. The nice thing is its in 7.62x51 so ammo is much easier to locate than 8mm Mauser.

Great video. These were definitely revolutionary when they were introduced. It brought all the important elements of a bolt action together for the first time... Although I think the K98 or P17 is the pinnacle of the Mauser military rifle. And im glad theres a Mauser fan on this channel. I like Mosins but the obsession has gone a little overboard. Everyone takes them out of context. Ive said before, if they went for the same price as Mauser's its clear which is the better choice.

Fluff ""And yes, it is disgusting"" - What the fuck? seriously. That's the fucking stupidest thing I've ever heard said un-ironically. "and often people who call themselves patriotic are exactly that. Nationalists" Aside from the fact that they are to entirely distinct concepts that have no bearing on each other? Pride in your country, no matter where you are from is not a bad thing at all. Just go and look up the definitions, please. You look like a real fucking idiot. ""don't only love their country, but think it is superior and has some special rights that others don't have"" What 'special rights'? What are you talking about? To think that your country is superior to all others is a distinctive feature of nationalism. "And of course it is THEIR country, and foreigners have to stay the fuck out of it" Well there is normally a very good reason for them believing that other than just "I don't like foreign people because they aren't from here, and here is superior because etc" Do you also think that borders are racist?

That's actually an old fallacy. The Mauser bolt sticking in the freezing cold has nothing to do with the mechanism and everything to due with the fact that Germans used grease instead of oil for lube. German grease in 98 actions had a much higher freezing point than oil and in Russian winter froze hard. This was the source of the bolt getting stuck. Russians were aware of this issue which is why their lube of choice was a light oil cut with a small amount of kerosene. Much lower freezing point. Germans switched to oil lube which totally remedied the issue. If you'd run grease in a mosin you would likely see similar stickign issues. I've used my 1927 ex dragoon Mosin 91/30, AND my Vz24 Mauser (iisued to German army after annexation) in cold down to about -5 Fahrenheit. Neither had sticking issues since I lube with oil.

Thanx for this nice little feature about the Gewehr 98. I personally think it is still the essence of bolt actions. Although one can argue about greater precision of barrel locking systems for bench resters. There is a reason (or some more) why Professional Hunters still strongly prefer Mauser K 98 systems for their big game guns. Reliability! If your life is on display, you also would prefer a confidence builder in your hand. Side note: I've never heard or red about a PH saying: "I want a new Elephant gun. Build it on a Mosin Nagant system."

+TFB TV We all have a firearm (or two) that speaks to us, that just feels "right." For me, that's the M1 Garand. I've never had the opportunity to handle a Gewehr 98, but I did get to cycle the bolt on a Yugo Mauser once, and I was very impressed with how smooth the action was. They seem like cool rifles. I'm glad you and this Mauser "found each other." Thanks for the video!

While I prefer the Lee Enfield No. IV Mk III a little bit more than the Mauser 98, there is no doubt that Mauser made much better stripper clips than the Lee Enfield did. If you watch this video than the Enfield video, then you can easily see the difference. If I take my Enfield to the range, then I usually don't even use the stripper clips at all. They are just that frustrating, that it's better to load them individually.
@XLesky

Nice shooting, I felt your frustration at that miss. Happens to the best. I don't have a military 98, but I do have an FN 98 commercial that was converted to .308 Norma Magnum. Love that gun! The 98 action with the controlled round feed is still arguably the best action for dangerous game hunting, and Mausers always feel like a rifle should!

Looking on the internet I can't find one exactly like it. I think it may be a crown grade or imperial. It is a real straight shooter as well. I believ a fair amount were sold in Texas, so you've propbably run into them before. I don't think Husquevarna makes rifles anymore...or at least they don't sell them here.

Big question that will affect future purchase, I own a kar98k made in 44 captured by the Yugoslavians, is the gewehr 98 more accurate despite being produced roughly 40 years before mine? I figured the longer barrel is what would make it more accurate but did the Germans improve the grooves in the rifle for the kar98? Plus I assume the gewehr has more range? And they're both 7.92 so I won't have to waste ammo

I want one of these badly, but I've had a hard time finding them. Or at least quality ones.

Hey Alex, I doubt I'll get a response, but I've been in the market for a Mauser and I don't know whether I should get a Swedish of a Yugo Mauser. Which do you think is better? Or are they both great?

Please include the target in the video during the run&gun. I'm really miss the target. Now, it's like shooting into the void.

Wish 7.62x54R was still cheap. Definitely regret not getting down with the mosin madness while the getting was good.
