I really enjoyed the video. However, there is one important detail that you (and surprisingly many other collectors) got wrong: The 98 action does not vent into the magazine. Yes, the holes are on the bottom of the bolt but when it is locked they turn 90° clockwise which lines them up perfectly along the left receiver wall. The gases are vented through the holes, then between the bolt body and left receiver wall and out the thumb-cutout on the left. They are blocked from going rearward by the bolt shrowd shield. Venting hot gases into a fixed box magazine would be a terrifying idea because it would blow out the magazine's side walls which would themselves catastrophically burst the wood around the magazine into pieces of shrapnel. Greetings from Austria :-)

A small but significant MODEL 98 extractor detail that is rarely mentioned these days: the front face of the square post that rides in the bolt head groove is beveled as well as the front wall of the groove. This tends to force the extractor hook inward to increase cartridge rim engagement pressure so that the hook doesn't slip out and over the rim. I don't know if the earlier models have this feature. If so it may be called out say in Olson's book.

Great vid! I have several mausers. I grew up shooting groundhogs with dads, the sweet 8mm K-98 he bought when he was 16 in the 60's for $40! It was an unissued numbers matching bring back "GLOVER!" With the stamped large trigger gaurd! Made in 1944 in BRNO. He shot rats with it! I didn't own a bb gun for 5 yrs after I was picking off ground hogs at 250 yrds with that K-98! I was 7 yrs old! It still looks just as nice as when he got it, because I was taught that if I ever fell to place my body between that K98 and the ground or get an ass whoopin'! I could DA it sitting on my right hand blindfolded at 10! I told my wife if this house catches fire leave everything, grab that K98 and run! Watching you it suddenly hit me that some of the rifles we own were the last vision of earthly life, the last warmth felt by fallen hands as desperate prayers for home and family misty vision escaped dying lips. Humbling!

Thanks for your overview of Mauser rifles. I have an exception regarding the use of 1893 bolt design with the flat base. The Spanish 1916 rifle used the same bolt as the 1893. They are interchangeable. I have the Persian M98/28 rifle which was manfactured by BRNO. It's a great shooter. As someone else mentioned, the K98 vents from the left side of the large ring.

In 1972, there was a sale in DC, Argentine 09 and Kar 98, The Argentine was literally mint and the kar 98 looked well worn. I took 2 of the 09's, had a competent gunsmith rebarrel one in 243 and the other in 308 in 20", butterknife bolt handle and Austrian style Fajen stock, tack driver hits. My mistake, I should have bought 3 rifles and kept the third one intact just like mint issue. Argentina did not have any wars until the80's.

one of my favorite is German mauser k98 bolt action rifle it was use by the Filipino military they where called tiradores dela muerte or the Marksman of death , it was in Filipino revolution and Filipino American war
@piosian41963 жыл бұрын
The Filipino Mausers were mostly Spanish Mausers (DWM, Berlin) supplied to the Spanish forces in 1891. On encounters with the Katipuneros, some Spanish soldiers lose their guns and easily changed hands with the revolutionaries. Some later models like the Chilean Mausers 1893 also were used . They were 7 X 57 mm. Kar 98 were used by the Nazi's in WW II. It's not possible to arm any army in 1898 with a firearm made in 1898. Paul Mauser invented the Rifle in 1876, and produced thousands every year the longest and the most numerous were the K98 in 7.92 X 57mm (8mm) in both WW I and WW II. Yes the Filipino unit of snipers were armed with Mausers but the 1891 and a few 1893 models.

@FLVCTVAT_NEC_MERGITVR4 жыл бұрын
@22:15 when you say that the yugo M48 is interchangeable with the Mauser 98 action, what parts do you mean ? In my experience, that is patently false since the Yugoslav 24/47 and M48 Mausers are actually FN copies of the M98 action, shortened to an intermediate length; the bolts will not interchange in each other's actions.

"But most of those models, with few exceptions kinda like the Yugo M48s, most of those are exact copies of the 98..." I was saying, but not very clearly, that the Yugo 48 is an exception and is not an exact copy and not interchangeable. I do believe that you are right and the Yugo M48 uses the FN 1924 "intermediate" reciever length.
@FLVCTVAT_NEC_MERGITVR4 жыл бұрын
@@MilsurpWorld ah, that's for clearing that up. Also, why do you think that FN was able to get away with copying the design so closely, and why do you think they went to a shorter action?
@MilsurpWorld4 жыл бұрын
After WW1 Mauser couldn't enforce their patents as they could before the war such as with the Springfield 1903. Mauser would have sued Britian as well for the P13 as well but the war stopped that. I think FN's thought process was that by shortening the action length you reduce materials needed for manufacturing and the weight of the rifle. But as FN found out, interchangeability with the German 98 was important to most countries.
