They are using Mocap so budget is big. You have powerful computer/processor to have this clean design and not look blocky. They have better tech than what SM should be giving to aespa.

Absolutely love this song, very epic and movie/game like, which is very fitting. The MV is also beautifully rendered though the dance looks a bit strange at times but that’s to be expected with ai. Otherwise really solid debut. Looking forward to see what else they’ll do and especially how they’ll handle promotions like music shows.

I think the biggest problem with the dancing is that they probably tracked the choreographers. And they go HARD. If you watch demo versions of choreographies they always are much more hard hitting because the dancers aren't dancing it like idols. They don't have to sing after all. I think they should have maybe had different people dance the actual tracking material.

I have to say, in terms of realism the quality of their character CGI is the best in Kpop right now. However i share your concerns about the group as a whole. The parasocial aspect has become an integral selling point of the Kpop industry by now. Marketing virtual avatars as relatable people could be extremely tough. That said they clearly have the vocals and the talent. The music isn't bad either, just a little underwhelming in comparison to the other groups that have been absolutely popping off lately. It'll be interesting to see in which direction they take the project next.

Let's be honest, we couldn't connect with them beyond looking at the mv and be amazed at how cool and well done everything is, but that's is all to it, we still really just be looking at AI. Need to also remember that there's actual girls behind these AI characters doing the singing and dancing. Before being able to support them fully, I need to know if the girls behind the voices is treated properly and not another unfair and cruel case like BBC and LOONA. A lot of things could go wrong with this as well since we didn't even get to see the girls and we don't know the nature of their contracts is.

It gets even more weird if you consider that they might not necessarily be real girls. they could just as well be vocaloids for all we know (technology has come a far way there). If they are real people, then the company could be rotating members in and out without anyone realizing. I'm not saying such a project is inherently wrong, it's still art at the end of the day. But it just wouldn't be something that the majority of existing Kpop fans would buy into, as it strays too far from the established industry formula.

I think if it is to give a chance to have the girls showcase their talent without having to be judged by looks I appreciate it. As we know the south korean public isnt a fan of what goes outside of the standard. Maybe that is why they went for it. Idk... of course i would still love to see the girls themselves get love. Survival shows show this very well, a person may sing or rap well but the public wont vote.

If this the way for idols to debut and sing although they don't feat the beauty standards of Korea, I prefer this from being cast away because of their looks. They might be able to pull it off. There are quite a few talents that keep their true identities hidden behind virtual characters. VTubers are able to connect to their audience (and quite a few of them release music and find ways to perform). Also one of the biggest acts in Japan right now is Ado and she uses an avatar/design as opposed to showing her IRL self. And she has tour going on. If their company can use the strengths of these examples and make the members personable (maybe through online fan events, similar to how VTubers have streams and social media to connect), maybe it can work in their favor. Only time will tell though.

i agree with you, i rlly liked the song, very kda, and the ai looks fantastic, i mean, they went all out. but it's true that i'd like to actually see them, just because ai idols alone rlly feels kinda empty. i think they could have done so many great things with the ai and the sound! i was surprised by the rap as well, and the vocals sounded so good.

I think this genuinely would only work for Aespa. Like their æ are MAVE but the vocalists are actually Aespa. That way it would be a reason to have an AI group and we know who are the people behind it.

what exactly makes MAVE Ai? Their concept isn't Ai. They are just a virtual group. There is no story/lore like 'Detroit become human' where there are established Ai's wanting more. This concept doesn't make sense to me especially when we don't get to see the behind the scenes, or the dancers and vocals behind them. They want us to treat them like they are real idols...big no, we cannot connect to them the way we connected with K/DA. MAVE is expressionless and cold, THAT is what makes it weird. It's cool they wanna do virtual singers but this is not how you do it.

I like the song, there are parts to it that are quite enjoyable. It is however, like you said, not terribly impactful for a debut which seems like a must for newer groups nowadays. Like it's not a small company, they're owned by netmarble which is the biggest shareholder of Big Hit/HYBE besides founder Hitman Bang. And netmarble's biggest shareholder apart of its founder is CJ ENM. MAVE: specifically is a collaboration with Kakao (netmarble's CEO is also former Kakao CSO/Kakao M CEO). That's all the titans of the Korean entertainment industry (also all 3 were trying to snipe up SM shares so it makes the aespa comparisons a tad funnier). I do think it is hilarious that people are finding parts of the choreo that are like "this is black mamba, this is savage pre", like stop lmao. I think an issue arises once you consider live performances, like how is that going to take place? At least with a group like SUPERKIND you have human performers that will still be the main part of the performance, and if you put their AI characters on screen, on some "hologram" or AR-style setup it only adds to that existing performance but without the human performers it's just not going to be the same. With aespa the AI characters don't perform together and are basically just a plot device. A good part of artists' income is live gigs so will they be losing out? Could they also be more disposable since we don't know the performers behind the characters? With other virtual bands like Gorillaz, K/DA or even Japanese anime ones like the bands in BanG Dream you at least know every performer driving those characters. Now here's the part about the actual characters. I gotta say they do look better than the BP PUBG collab. That said, they are going for a realistic style so that opens the door to a lot of realism issues. The eyes look dead (props for the eyewear like shades and visor), the skin is plastic, the animation is almost there but at points seem to move without a sense of weight or momentum. Those things completely take you out of immersion fast. APOKI, K/DA, even aespa have more cartoony, stylized looks that don't run into some of these issues. Also not sure why they didn't give the characters more unique identifiable features so you can tell them apart much more easily.

Very very odd. Totally agree with your comments. The animation is very well done, but it's a bit "uncanny valley". You cant' really connect with them because they're not real. The songs was nothing special, nothing we haven't heard before. Very strange.

Personally, I’m not here for it. This is the same as AI replicating other art forms and it removes the human element, which is what makes art special. Can I appreciate the mv, production and vocals? Sure-because that is the artistry on display. But for me it was like watching the live action Lion King, everything was there, but the heart was missing, the connection.

If it's AI it might be the most realistic vocals ever in history, cuz even the most famous and expensive vocaloid in the world sounds like that. The voices sound like actual human vocalists with some auto-tune.

ai kpop for me is so bland the fact that everything is "perfect" is uncomfortable and for me they are not idols just an ai i dont feel connected to the idols its so empty and where are all the real interaction, concert, fan meeting events, no hate too the companies or people who voice them ... but for me its a no and im scated of the idea that kpop is going to be like this in the future ( hope not)

I cant get past the uncanny-ness of it. They all look like cookie cutter asian beauty standard, the animations at times are jittery, there are frames where you can literally see the character models stuttering out of position, some of the movements look so unnatural. I agree with you, it isn't necessarily pleasant to watch the choreo. It's technically impressive, sure, but it's just nowhere near the enjoyment I, as a human, get from watching other humans dance. And I agree that the song is good, but not unique enough. Like many pointed out, the chorus sounds similar to MORE from K/DA. It's hard to care about them as idols when they're literally not real. We don't care about Aespa's ae's the same way we care about the real people in Aespa. And for K/DA, the interest is built into either being interested in the lore of the games and having that connection, and/or the interest and support of the idols behind the characters. People love Soyeon AS Akali, not just Akali, if that makes sense.
