It's very similar to the TQ - HPR50 released last Summer but has a narrower Q factor and apparently a more precise way to manage torque sensing. Pinarello now uses the TQ system but I'm sure they'd like the narrower Q factor and light weight of this one. Launching with a Shimano compatible system is smart but to increase their Total Addressable Market they will need to make other motor to crank interface arms available that will fit other cranks, like for those OEM's who want to use belts. Developing a more powerful unit for cargo bike applications would also make this proposition more appealing to a future financier. Here's to them finding the right finance partner!

This looks great, exactly the ebike I've been waiting for, and I would probably buy one, but Mavic: please don't make it dependent on stupid cloud features. I just want a bike that works, not one I have to do IT admin for and becomes unsupported after 5 (or whatever) years.

Mavic doesn't have a history of such behaviour, and they're french from Annecy. I'm probably second degree friends with several of them. It means they are wary of privacy and resilience. So I wouldn't worry, they're not Amazon or Apple. You can expect to own what you buy from them, outright.
@hugov392
@hugov392 Жыл бұрын
@@pierrex3226 even if their hearts are in the right place (and I have no reason to doubt your assessment), long term support on cloud features is both technologically challenging over long time periods (look at the tech stack used in most cloud apps today compared to a decade or two ago) and incurs ongoing fees to run the service. If you combine that with a one-time purchased product (rather than a subscription/etc), you end up in a place where no matter how good the intentions, the service realistically won't be supported after 5-10 years at the most.

What puzzles me with many of the e-road bike videos that I see, is that the presenters/demonstrators frequently seem to be very fit, relatively young riders, which is the demographic I would expect to be the least interested in riding e-bikes, and at which the market is not really directed. Obviously anyone can ride an e-bike if they want to, but I have always assumed that those who, maybe through age or injury/disability, were having difficulty continuing riding, would generally be the ones looking for these machines, not those who still ride hard. I myself, having luckily stayed relatively injury free, finally switched to e-assist in my late eighties, and I am sure you will find many others who will say the same. So, am I the only one to find this odd?

Ho man, I use (and I have build) electric bikes for more than 10 years (when I stopped to use cars). I really enjoy all these innovations everywhere and the one you present in this video. MAVIC has already achieved something BIG, and if I can tell them "please, don't mess up with the cloud and please do not transform the bikes into something like John Deere tractors plenty of unacceptable software restrictions". We do not want any spy in the bicycle, we want to buy bicycle and do what we want with it, we do not want to buy just a licence allowing the right to use the bicycle.

I like that a lot, it looks very promising to have a nice light bike with no drag but help on the hills. My current bike is a Niner RLT with a Bosch CX which has more than enough power in Eco for me and a considerable step up in terms of having no drag compared to my 10-year-old Bosch classic running a Nexus 8.

It's nice to see lightweight hub motors like these, they really do open up new possibilities for ebikes that feel almost exactly like acoustic bikes whenever you want them too. And since we're talking high-end, we might see this paired with the new gen battery tech for sub-2kg full systems with no drag. Really impressive.

@FabriSlv
@FabriSlv Жыл бұрын
That's the other end of the spectrum, though, that would be a much heavier transmission which makes sense for heavier full power eMTBs, as the gearbox alone adds a few kilos. It's cool and I really would like to see that on the market, but it might be more for comfort-oriented eMTBs (due to the lower maintenance) than performance Enduro bikes.

This seems the perfect solution to the one issue I have with lightweight mid mounted drive units such as the Fazua Ride 50 and 60, in that those don’t allow the use of Q Rings, whereas Mavic offer will by virtue of the use of a standard crankset. Only question is how Mavic achieve this. Other systems like Fazua isolate back pedalling from the motor. So how does Mavic solve that issue?

I have a Ribble endurance SL e. Once I had gotten used to the digital 105 mech, I have found that it rides nicely. You’re bound to get more noise out of a crank-based motor, as there is no noise insulation. In four years time, the motor will likely be half the size with equal power and the battery, two thirds less the weight, with two to three times more power. Which means the frame size can pretty much stay the same as a regular bike. The software will likely let you race against a competitor or childhood hero and go out on demanding mountain routes and will bring in the cycling 60’s and possibly octogenarians with good legs. As for the existing e-bike market, I’d say that is already fairly well understood, but a better power-to-weight ratio, will make for more innovative designs, because by that time, they’ll be printing out bikes, including the mechs. In fact, once they have reduced the motor size and increased the power, they can shake the derailleur and build a small gearbox into the motor housing and move to a belt-drive.

Could the motor do regenerative braking? Move the ratchet to the pedals/axle then use either a fixed gear or internal geared hub modified for direct drive (no freewheel). The chain or belt always runs and the motor could measure backpedaling to adjust braking power (it would require the cycloidal gear to efficiently drive from the output shaft, and at first glance I can't find any information on that).

I'm French. Yet another example of being great at engineering and sucking at business. Partnering with BMC and putting dura ace on the test units essentially makes this a high end dentist bike. Yet they talk of commuting bikes. Mavic also has a history of going bankrupt. I've been buying carbon wheels from Xiamen for almost ten years now, and I'd bet they're better than Mavic. They will probably fail at mass production, will retail for a ridiculous price, and virtually nobody will use these things. Which is a shame, because i absolutely love that motor. Regular cranksets+ no drag when off + mid drive + small form factor + non trivial range sound amazing.

The middle motor concept won't work on a fast road bike. We already have Fazua if you want one - there is no need for that bulky solution Mavic offers. The battery cannot easily be removed from the frame. There are so many flaws in the concept that I wonder how on earth do they think that this will work? It is complete nonsense.

Really interesting hearing about these developments. The size and weight seem very beneficial to E-Road bikes and lightweight commuters / MTB. I'm hopefully another decade or more away from wanting to get assistance on my rides. But I'm fully behind everyone that wants to use this tech to keep riding / ride with others who are quicker / access bigger, longer rides / etc 👍 Now Mavic just need to do the REALLY hard thing, turn a prototype into a production device, that works as advertised, is durable, is supported by the industry and isn't prohibitively expensive 🤪

Oh cool it uses a cycloidal reducer. Haven't seen many products with one of those yet.

My knees tell me I need this ! It looks good, integrates with existing cranks and has good stats .. looking forward to seeing it in production and what bikes are fitted with it. 😊

The motor looks really good. The one problem I have with these light weight e-bikes is that nearly all of them have built in batteries. As I live in a fifth floor flat it's not really ideal when the battery is not detatchable for charging.

Does it work with 3rd party 24mm axle based cranks? e.g. Rotor Aldhu?

Hard to believe the 10kg total weight when the average road bike is 10kg. Subtracting the 3.2kg system weight gives a 6.8kg bike. That's a very light bike! But, any 15kg with 50km range would give a nice 2hr ride.

In my country the e-bikes price is simply much much higher than 99% of the people can afford or accept and I dont know why. Same brand, same quality frame, same parts and accessories but price of the e-bike version is the triple of quadruple the original price which is insane.

@@lukaszlukasiewicz8382 This is an e-bike conversion motor. The amazing thing about this is that they can save you from being stranded due to exhaustion on extra long rides. Also, this one can be fully disabled leaving you with the friction of a high-quality bottom bracket.

Very interesting. I wonder how it compares to the CYCmotor Photon. The Photon is also integrated with the crank, but you can put it on virtually any bike. You don't need a specific frame design. And it provides up to and over 1,000 watts.
@ataksnajpera
@ataksnajpera Жыл бұрын
This motor has no chance with PHOTON. 250W nominal vs 750W nominal. Let's not forget about price. Photon costs ~1000$ while this motor will cost more than 2000$. Also requires custom frame and probably proprietary battery system like on BOSCH ebikes. Cool idea but DOA.
