Seito Matsumura Shorin Ryu teaches to chamber mawashi geri at front because it helps disguise the type of kick at first. Other styles chamber to the side. Neither is wrong, just different. :-)

As JKA student, I chamber at front during competition but chamber to the side when doing Kihon exercises as well as during belt exam on kihon.

This is a complicated kick with several variations and you give good explanations. I would definitely start students with the lifting the knee first, not the foot. Two things to add: first pivot more on the supporting foot to bring the hip around more as the kick is delivered. Secondly, try and avoid pivoting on the heel. This will put you off balance and also reduces the effectiveness of the kick.

In practicality, you bring it around while you pivot the foot. They teach it this way in the beginning to emphasize the fact that it's circular.

Actually, you are talking about your style of martial Arts, as in Goju Ryu karatedo, we teach this method of kick to beginners only and when they have can do this kick to level of ability, we then change this way because we want to protect the groin and attacks to the inside of the leg in kumite training

Quick questions: 1-lifting the leg to the side before the pivot... doesn't that make the ckick slow and predictable? 2-this is just mere curiosity, why do you guys lift your arms to the sides to demonstrate kicks? Osu.
@honigdachs.

My opinion: 1.) Yes it does. It should be eliminated from the actual execution as soon as possible. I find it very easy to catch such kicks and take my opponent down because you see them coming a mile away. I learned the roundhouse kick this way when I originally started training in Karate, but would argue that it shouldn't be taught like that in the first place. In the school I currently train in, this is thankfully discouraged. All techniques should be quick, direct, without telegraphing and non-robotic. 2) Never seen that before tbh. I think it's the same as the lifting of the leg to the side - an unnecessary habit that produces problems in actual application and needs a ton of time to remove from your "system".

@@honigdachs. You're actually talking about a "sport-Karate" point of view .... something that i respect, of course but not everyone is interested in that kind of Karate ... i'm not, for example, i always preferred the traditional martial art ... ANd "Tradition" MUST evolve, too, of course, and everything can be developed and improved but without being "corrupted" by the needs of sport competition. THis is the challenge: make the traditional technique "natural" and fast ! Once again, that doesn't mean that i don't respect sport karate, but martial art is something different and it shouldn't be lost !!!
@honigdachs.
@honigdachs. 3 жыл бұрын
@@MagDiSante Not sure what you mean. No matter if it's sport karate or not - the advanced level of throwing a mawashi geri should be direct, from natural stance or fudo dachi, with no wind-up and no funny movements that resemble a dog peeing at a tree. It's just dysfunctional and shouldn't be done that way. I do of course understand that it's initally taught that way to the white belts to make them understand the difference between a front and a round kick, and to prevent them from shovelling the foot upwards and getting hurt by kicking into an elbow etc. But it also creates bad habits and many people never evolve from that beginners' kihon, even though they might already be brown or black belts. IMO a correct, healthy and powerful kicking technique can be taught without these unncessary intermediate stages. One of the pitfalls of karate is that we spend so much time training people to do all kinds of weird and unnatural stuff, and then unsuprisingly fail to teach them how to leave it behind when it's time. I do come from a traditional, but very practial karate background by the way.
@MagDiSante
@MagDiSante 3 жыл бұрын
@@honigdachs. as i told You, i agree with You if You say that the "basic stances and moves" should evolve and chamge to something more natural and effective (without forgetting the basis itself and the main principles) ... But if You "load" a mawashi geri in the same way you use for mae geri, well of course it's a typical and effective trick used by sport karate competitors in order to "fake" a front kick and the convert it to a roundhouse kick ... But in order to achieve the max power and strength, the "loading" of mawashi geri should be different ... in a real fight, You aren't trying to "getting a point" ... Sport Karate is good for training your body, of course and i have to admit that "traditional schools" (my background is 100% traditional SHotokan) have some fails, as You wrote ... They should help a practitioner to make his karate more and more natural and effective, (without leaving the basis) but most of times this doesn't happen, alàs, you're right ! But following the "sport path" isn't the correct way, imho ... !!!

Sensei - thank you for your videos. They contribute to elevation of the practice of Shotokan worldwide. I have a question about the pivoting leg, specifically the action AFTER the pivot. Sometimes, when moving forward, the post-pivot occurs with the heel moving and the ball of the foot maintaining floor-contact. Other times, the heel maintains contact with the floor, and the ball of the foot swivels around as you form zenkutsu-dachi. Would you speak to this? I realize you’re doing these slowly for explanatory purposes. Do you find less knee stress and better loading (for a follow-up gyaku-zuki?) with an early ‘pivot-back’ on the koshi? By the way - your book was fantastic!! Oss!! Thanks again!!
@seamusodowdkarate
@seamusodowdkarate 7 жыл бұрын
The most correct way to pivot the foot after the kick (if stepping forward) is to pivot on the heel, bringing the foot forward. This gives more power to the follow-up technique. Apologies if the video is somewhat inconsistent: it is difficult to always pivot correctly due to losing balance, especially when demonstrating slowly.

If you lift the knee to the side, like shown here, you are a fool for telegraphing your technique. The correct way to do it is the one you show "for competition". The power is not generated by twisting the body but by the sharp HIP rotation: fast, sharp, unseen, stings like a bee! The only time you have to lift the knee to the side is when contact is attempted with the BALL of the foot. 90% of mawashigeris, though, use the instep to hit the target. How is that for a Free lesson.
@mleor4427

Regarding only piviting the hip you're wrong. In full contact sparring or self defense you can seriously injure yourself by only using the hip .Yes a lot of power comes from the hip but you have to use other parts of your body as well. In this video, The Sensei shows an excellent demonstration on how to do a mawashi geri correctly.

A free lesson from you? LOL... It seems you have seen to many bad movies. Sensei makes quite a good teaching of mawashi geri, even if only for KOSHI MAWASHI GERI. You can take the word of a black belt - 3'rd dan of Gōjū-Ryū Karate.

I think you are right about the "stings-like-a-bee" mawashi geri when the knee is chambered directly in the front of the torso. The chambering on the side, however, makes it more like a sledge-hammer. They are essentially two different kicks with two different utilities altogether. A good parallel would be something like this: to slap somebody playfully, you would simply extend your elbow towards them and swing your forearm (more like a pat). However, if you really mean to slap somebody when you are angry, you would start the elbow on the side and make a wide swing.

Classic Karate syllabus nonsense, it might be practiced that way in the drills but it’s to slow and telegraphy for real application. Forward execution is best and there is such a thing as powerful enough.
