I used your way of teaching mawashi uke with my over 60 class (these are students that are over the age of 60, some of which have only been training 2 years or less). One student, 71, was having a very hard time with this block until I showed him your method and he got it very quickly. Thank you so much for all of your informative videos. I like the way that you use the KISS method (Keep It Simple Sensei/Senpai).

+Debra Lewis I belong to the 60+ category. There are some Karate techniques which I cannot execute such as the jumps in Heian Godan and Enpi, and the double kick in Kankudai. Many older people would need a modified version, but then we do not intend to go inside the cage, so I guess it's fine if we do not train to do those techniques which would only cause injuries to us. Anyway, I enjoy doing KATA. I do KATA every morning, in addition to doing Tai Chi.

So your "over 60" class is for people over 60, for those who didn't get that. If you are teaching you should be a properly qualified Sensei in whatever style or school you learnt in and earnt your grades in. Which means you should be teaching Mawashi Uke the way it was taught, what you are supposed to be teaching, your own teacher's method. If you are incapable of teaching the technique then you should not be teaching it. The answer is not to come to a 3 min You Tube video to show your "student" so they can learn from that. Or worse, trying to learn from a You Tube vid and then "teaching" that in a class, while claiming to be a qualified Instructor. You are an idiot and a disgrace to Karate.

Hello from Ukraine. Thank you very much for your videos. All of them are great. You are doing a great job. Keep on releasing new and new videos. I am practicing Shotokan karate without instructor. It is difficult in my country to find a good instructor, who teach all of karate, not only some elements. I would like to ask you to release videos regarding right techniques for knee kick, mikazuki geri and especially self defence techniques. Unfortunately, in Shotokan karate schools in Ukraine self defence techniques are not taught, only the basics without their practical applications. In your video you explained details in performing techniques on a very professional level. That's why I would appreciate if you release more and more videos on Shotokan karate. Thank you.

In my opinion, the best interpretation video of Shut Mawashi uke on KZbin. As a Kyokushin practitioner, we do big circular motion for the sake of kihon's, but I prefer this video version best so you can still manage to deflect and attack when needed rather than big circular motion. Plus, bunkai is right on point. Thank you fellas and keep up the good job!!

Niceto see how other styles make use of this technique. the goju ryu version is typically to create an opening to rip at the throat and balls simultaneously as is represented by the hands being at a high and low position.

Incredible but true! I've learned this technic since March 2018, but i finally got it only yesterday. It has taken men one year to be able to do it properly. Every time i had to execute nijushiho it was like hell. Yesterday my sensei found that it was enough, that it was time to me to do it. And he was right cause i can do it easilly now.

The sideways alignment at 1:38 is a great beginning, but the idea about it being correct is not functional. When doing a solo kata, we teach balance. However, in combat, we want to create imbalances, especially in our opponent. Having one hand more forward than the other is often what is needed to create imbalance. These ideas about what is "correct" often prevent black belts from being able to use the technique in combat.

Okinawa styles also teach This block with tension while drilling sanchin datchi, albeit like goju’s sanchin Kata. I practice shorin-ryu - shuri-te and we do this block with tension, and tensing the whole body, with breathing. Does shitoryu do this also? I wouldn’t think shotokan does but could be wrong?

Not a single one of those bunkai had timing that was the same as the performance of the technique, and most had completely different paths for the hands towards the later part of the movement. Not every system does these the same either. It's good to show these two variants, but both Goju-ryu and Uech-ryu do this movement, and even some people in my system of Okinawan Kenpo and all these systems have very different approaches. There are many different approaches to it, and I find the one's that work without any change in timing or movement are best as you can use them exactly as you practice them. If you have to change a technique at all for bunkai, then it's only when you practice bunkai that you are really practicing how to fight.
