The vagaries of rallying - Home grown Fergus doesn't even need notes from the pub in Dervaigh to Tobermory and loves every minute, whilst in 1979, from the school south of the Bellachroy to Tobermory was the last stage of that years rally. Remember it well as at the final stage start, our clutch exploded bringing a brilliant rally and potentially excellent finish position to a halt. I can smile philosophically about it now, but on the night it was the end of the world. Such is life but hell, what a drive Mr Barlow👏👏

It’s a brutal rally and you can’t count your chickens until you are fully over the final time control! It can be cruel as well as amazing but that’s why we love it! 1979 back in the road rallying era which blows my mind! Flat out on the roads and every chance you could meet a car coming the other way! Did you ever have any close ones?

@@Fergus.Barlow Back in the day, Mull as you will propably know was Saturday afternoon in the forests (Fishnish and Co) and then a night rally. Having said that, Strathclyde Traffic (probably rally enthusiastic coppers) were sent over to 'police' the event and virtually made it rally traffic only. So no, did 1978 and 1979 but never did a Mull closed road event. I love Mull (the island) with a passion but Tour's of Mull rallying are now only memories that no one can take away. I reckon it has that affect on every rally person that steps foot/tyre on the island - it is that special. Love watching the drives Gus and maybe you will be depriving Mr MacKinnon of top spot again next year?

It’s so fun and why spend all that money and heartache if you can’t take time to enjoy it!! Rallying is pure class!!

Brilliant to run through. Great job catching up on the notes at the start after the cable distraction. Looked almost like you went quicker without the notes, but a couple of wince moments! Love watching on-board as much as outside, listening in etc
@Fergus.BarlowАй бұрын
The cable was definitely a bit of a distraction but Darren was all over it and got it tucked away! I would definitely have been a little quicker and more confident with the notes toward the end but id decided this year to try and enjoy it more and have a laugh with my best friend so coming off the notes and both enjoying was a real buzz! Perhaps not something to try on the first few night stages right enough!!

It’s so nice to hear how many people have such fond memories of the event over the years! It’s exactly that, why we need to keep fighting and keep it the best rally in the world!!

Feckin madman no notes at the end🤣👌🏻 was on the cliffs at loch frisa afternoon & night glad you made it to the end as car sounded sick on stage 20😬🏁🏁🏁

Yeah the second run back to tob we had the misfire again and also around calgary, shame really as cost a lot of time but getting to the end of mull is hard enough in itself so can’t complain!

Class second half with no notes, in the zone and completely on it, brilliant! 🤌 Drove that road at a snails pace when I was over during the summer and could see how great it would be at pace, great to see it done properly.
@Fergus.BarlowАй бұрын
That stage has to be one of the best in the rally! The first part through to dervaig is nice and fast! Then back to tobermory is a good challenge, it seems to be getting slippier every year!
@matthewatkinson1092Ай бұрын
4th fastest on this stage, maybe with notes might of been a bit quicker? Wonder what the guys are like at a different event off the island without the local knowledge?
@Fergus.BarlowАй бұрын
Very true, I certainly wouldn’t be nearly as quick! On mull the local knowledge helps massively there’s no doubt. What other rallies would you like to see us at? The argyll rally seems to be a good one, and also northwest states?

@@Fergus.Barlow Irish Tarmac, Donegal for the full challenge or Rally of the Lakes in Killarney, just to do the Molls Gap stage. If it's good enough for Kale Rovanpera to come and do the killarney historic in a Toyota Starlet, it's gotta be worth doing.
