I'm from central Italy, I didn't know there use to be Copris lunaris in Britain. Here on the central Appennine mountains we have tons of them together with C. hispanus cavolini and C. umbilicatus, which is far rarest than the previous two species. There are a few pastures where in June I could fill a bucket of Copris lunaris. Fortunately they are still a lot of open pastures with cattle, horses and sheeps, but things are changing rapidly and there are less and less shepherds every season.

Dear @monicabello3527 - how interesting, thank you! C. lunaris has always been rare here, and only on warm well-drained slopes in South England. Probably it has gone now. Our scarab fauna is small, only 5-6 Onthophagus and no 'rollers'. Geotrupidae is better, as they are more tolerant of northern latitudes and wet weather. Max Barclay
