Obviously he is on a talking head show where hot takes are the order of the day, but the numbers back him up somewhat on the idea hockey isn't a major player when it comes to national ratings.

I find that American fans who are hockey fans really know the game well, and are among the most knowledgeable and objective fans there are. Up in Canada, it's a mix of knowledgeable fans and the silly fanboys who are already booking a parade route on Yonge St.

As you said, hockey does well locally because it's a sport you kind of have to watch live in order to fall in love with it. Most people dont know what's going on when it comes on the TV but once they go to even just one game, they start watching it more. It's just a matter of breaking that ice which is hard to do when you live 3-4 hours from the closest hockey game.

For me, there are 3 major issues that the NHL needs to fix. 1. ESPN. I grew up going to hockey games in Detroit, and I loved to watch them on Fox Sports Detroit, but it wasn't until this year that I found out NBC had Wednesday Night Hockey. Frankly, no one touches NBC outside of Sunday Night Football. Growing up all the kids in school would watch ESPN and since they gave basically zero exposure to the NHL, barely anyone at school would talk about hockey. Keep in mind I went to school in Michigan, during the Red Wings 08 and 09 Stanley Cup Final runs. 2. Minorities. I myself am a minority, but I am hard-pressed to find a single other minority that watches Hockey (The only one I know is my Aunt, who started my love of hockey). Most minorities would much rather watch basketball. This issue I think is a result of lack of familiarity, nearly every school in America has basketball hoops to play on for recess. The most we can get of hockey is floor hockey in PE, and low-income areas often can't spend money on this. 3. Entertainment. I grew up watching tons of fights in Hockey and Niklas Kronwall hits but it is something I rarely see in today's game. This was such a fun part of hockey that is dying out and making it less entertaining for newcomers. I also loved making an enemy, I hated the Penguins during the good days, but now I don't think there is much hatred between teams or players. The NBA is a perfect example of milking rivalries, every time an altercation happens reporters pry at it and make it much deeper (This also kinda plays into the ESPN issue). The Kassian and Tkachuk made me a lot more interested in watching some more games. These small narratives throughout the season make it so much easier to follow for all 82 games.

Dude the fighting was not that great. It’s fighting on ice skates which is nearly impossible, it just slowed the game down and rarely was there ever a clean fight that landed great hits and a clear winner was obvious. All the penalties that got handed out just slowed the game down tremendously and hockey games could take forever. The game involves so much skill now and that has taken precedence over anything else which is the way it should be. Hockey is growing now so more than ever because of the gravitation towards pure skill

Well, at least they were aware of the Monsters' existence which is a good sign. :-) But this could be largely individual, heavily depending on what circle of people you currently move in. I live in the US and i'll never understand how "sports" like wrestling, golf and nascar can sometimes be more popular than hockey. Baseball too, although I understand it was America's game for a long time. It's absolutely boring... The vast majority of hockey fans here are rabid fans though. What sucks is that I can turn on my TV and watch football, baseball, nascar, whatever.. broadcast on national TV or local channels, but I can't do that with hockey. When I was a kid in the early 90's, my parents didn't have cable, so I would listen to every game on the radio. I would be so damn excited if a game was actually on tv. Americans absolutely do care about hockey. Once people get hooked, they're hooked for life.

What’s interesting is that the most watched NHL game of all time was in 1971 between the Blackhawks and Canadians which got a crazy rating of 20.6 in just the US alone. I wonder if the simplicity of the league back then benefited them, rather than expanding too much to not so great markets which will dilute the finals matchup such as Anaheim and Ottawa for example. Like that 1971 Final was really the SuperBowl of the NHL, and I feel like the fact that the league was smaller with bigger market teams made the matchup more iconic and must see television.

There are a number of problems with the popularity of hockey in the U.S. For one, hockey equipment is too expensive so a lot of kids grow up without every playing it. Playing a sport as a kid goes a long way into its enjoyment in adulthood. Secondly, televised hockey had big problems before the advent of widescreen HD TV. The puck was simply too small and traveled too fast. It does better now. As for watching hockey live, I would love to watch hockey live if, #1, the games were cheaper, #2, it wasn't a hassle just to go to the game and find your seat, #3, refreshments were cheaper and as far away as your own refrigerator, #4, the bathroom was 20 feet away with a clean toilet seat and you could pause the game while you went there.

Shannon, to answer your question at the end, I think one of the big problems is that the NHL does not know how to market their stars. Look at the NBA for example. How many times did you see MJ in his playing days compared to Gretzky or Mario. Has anyone seen a national commercial of say a Claude Giroux or a Connor McDavid (not sure about Canada commercials so apologize if this is incorrect). Until the the NHL stars market their stars better it will never reach the likes of the major 3. There is no where near the coverage of the NHL in the US and it for the most part was covered as about as well as the original XFL was. Even when it was on ESPN airways I don't recall it having good broadcast coverage even for the playoff games. Gary Thorne and Bill Clement did about as good as they could do but the ESPN crew as a whole did not really take it seriously. But like I originally said, The NFL, MLB and NBA market the stars of their sports much better than the NHL does for their sport. That's why you don't see big things on ESPN for hockey unless its for something like the Todd Bertuzzi/Steve Moore. Its a shame because hockey is the best sport for seeing live by far. As a Flyers fan, my first real experience was the 87 run and one of the first games I went to was Game 7 between the Flyers and Islanders. That year is when I fell in love with the sport and its a shame that the sport is somewhat disrespected in my country media wise.

As a fairly new fan to hockey as a Knights fan, I found myself liking Hockey more than the NBA. I'm a pretty old sports fan (57), and I cannot stand what the NBA has turned into. It's more about the 3 point shot and dunking than anything else. The midrange jumpshot is almost a relic of the past. The game has become very one dimensional, so I don't watch it anymore. I didn't think I would love Hockey as much as I do, and I wish I had gotten into it sooner. I flirted with fandom for years. I would pick a team to win the Stanley Cup, watch a few games, even though I had absolutely no idea what was going on. To me at that time, Hockey was, "Drop the puck, and try to shoot it into the goal. No organized play, no strategy, just get it in the goal." So, initially it didn't have the same appeal as the other major sports. It looked like chaos to me. I even wondered why hockey needed a coach! But, upon closer inspection. Hockey is extremely complex and the strategies are very flexible and malleable. Not rigid at all, like say the I Formation in college football. That was something I had to get used to as a new hockey fan. I think a lot of American viewers see the same things I saw in Hockey, and think it's just chaos on ice, with little to no strategy. I mean,... how interesting would Chess be, if you could move the pieces in any direction you wanted? No strategy, no rules, just move them any ol' direction you desire. You know, having bishops, rooks, and pawns jumping over other pieces on the board like in checkers? But anyway, I digress. Max Kellerman is a high paid loudmouth. That's his job, and he does it well. He's technically correct, but the way he says it, sounds like he's saying Hockey is crap, and that's why Americans don't care. Maybe a majority of Americans just don't "get" hockey. Besides, I'd much rather listen to THG over Kellerman any day.

To answer your exact question: Exposure and advertising. We had an AHL team for 5 years here in OKC and if I had a nickel every time I heard "we have a hockey team?" I could have bought them myself and kept them here. Plus the advertising. Most NHL games get relegated to the B channel or the regional equivalent. Best example is the "Wednesday Night Rivalry" on NBC. It gets aired on NBCSN which is already a cable/satellite channel. At most NBSCN will air one game a night, most other teams play on their regional network like Fox Sports SW for the Stars, however if the Mavericks or even the Thunder are playing then forget about seeing the game.

But I became a life long lover of it at 5 years of age, it even baffled my parents because I would watch all the Sonics, Mariners and Seahawks games, but all I really loved was hockey. I always told my parents I was going to be the best hockey player ever, but my parents had too many financial issues to be able to let me join a league and pursue that dream. Point is, I'm now a 32 year old American and I still love it to this day, it breaks my heart that hockey gets so looked over, its the greatest sport on this planet and ill argue that opinion to my grave. The Kings got their Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014 and Kings fans have fun with those successful runs. The Ducks and the Kings are big rivals with each other. And yes, I love the Paul Kariya Game 6 SCF goal. That was a thing of beauty and Gary Thorne called it perfectly. Overtime thrillers and the nature of ice hockey makes it awesome. So Cal is also a neat hockey hotbed on their own right. I've been watching hockey since 2001.

To answer why hockey is a regional sport, 17 out of the 31 teams are in Canada, California, Pennsylvania, Florida, and New York.

Honestly, a lot of sports leagues are localized, but still do better than hockey. I mean, the NBA has four teams in California alone and three in Texas. Basketball does well in the U.S. because NCAA basketball panders to places without NBA franchises. NCAA hockey only really does that in N. Dakota and maybe Wisconsin.

@@brooke-3615 Except the other three American sports leagues have a combined 2 Canadian teams, to which the NHL has 7. That means the NHL has a significantly smaller number of teams in the United States compared to the NFL, MLB, and NBA. Florida only has hockey, because all of the old people from Canada, New York, and Michigan go live there to await death, which created a serious demand for their state to get a team or two. Hockey is predominantly a major sport north of the Mason-Dixon line. On the other hand, you'd be hard pressed to find more than 5 people in the state of Alabama, who know who could tell you who Conner McDavid and/or Austin Matthews are.

That doesn't even *pretend* to answer "why is hockey a regional sport?". What drugs are you on, buddy. You simply gave examples of regions that have many teams. That's not why it's regional, that's the regions it's in professionally regarding the NHL, doofus. Seriously. What is wrong with you.

I've lived in northwest Ohio about 2 hours south of Detroit my whole life. Grew up playing street hockey and watching the Red Wings. I guess me and all the people I grew up with who watch and play hockey and all the kids I see playing at the local rink are no one.

St. Louis checking in. We love hockey here. And yes, it obviously just got a lot bigger due to recent events, but so many fans have been around since the beginning. My mom followed them from day 1. I'm a lifer myself. I can see the argument that it is regional though. I lived in Phoenix for 5 years. No one really cared about the Coyotes. It felt weird going to a home game and seeing all the visitor team sweaters in the stands (although I was guilty of that for Blues games there). My buddy and I watched a Coyotes/Oilers game there once. He had his Red Wings sweater on and I had my Blues sweater on (yeah, we were "those" guys). I did like how cheap the tickets were though.

But still, their average attendance has been somewhere around 12 to 13 thousands, so that is not "nothing" in the end. I'm from Europe and our average arenas from top tier leagues usually have a capacity of 5 to 8 thousand spectators. Only a handful of clubs from the biggest of big cities (from across all the countries) have arenas for 10,000 or more attendees and if they manage to get the yearly average attendance up to, let's say, 9 grands per game, then it is considered a BIIIIG success.

One thing to take into account with hockey also is that a lot of fans want to watch THEIR team, and if that team isn’t on your local sports channel, you can’t watch the game! It’s rough being a Tampa fan in North Carolina 😢

I love the Florida Panthers gear. Seems to be a subtle play at “yeah, I’ll take your strongest point, wear it on my body, and STILL defeat your argument.”
