The NES to SNES was a MASSIVE jump to anyone who was actually there. Sorry but, when you grew up with Atari and NES games with barely any background layers, F-Zero absolutely melted our minds. The music of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The physics of Pilotwings, etc. Insane console during its era.

Yeah SNES was a HUGE upgrade at the time lol... looking back I'm sure people barely notice the jump from 8 to 16 bit but at the time like you mentioned EVERYTHING was such a massive upgrade... when I finally got the system I got Megaman X and OMG the soundtrack and movement and controls were all so tight!

The mode 7 stuff was really was a massive jump for games visually... also a new pilot wings and f zero would be so good. Pilot wings is genuinely one of the more original game concepts out there.

This. Play metroid, then super metroid. The SNES was in another league. The jump from NES to SNES was a huge graphical and gameplay improvement. You can barely tell the difference on most PS4 to PS5 games

To be fair, there isn't really a need to reinvent the wheel on THIS system. Personally I think they should let Tec breath at least one more system life (i.e. the Switch 2) and then they can really do something with a jump. What Tec is demo-ing these days and what looks to be around the corner in about 5 years....something "radical" is well time commercially in like 7 years. The Switch just was lacking in "power" and this is perfect for where we are.

What really irritates me is how, after the Wii U’s failure (which I loved, by the way), so many people were clamoring for a “more powerful Switch” when talk of a successor first started. And now that Nintendo’s actually delivering on that, those same people are complaining, “It’s too similar!” Personally, I’m thrilled about the idea of a more powerful Switch. I can’t wait to learn more during the Direct in April or better yet, to finally get my hands on it!

Well the issue is that we’ve waited THIS long for a pro version. It took PlayStation, what, 4 years from launch to release a pro version that does nothing special. It took Nintendo 8 years, and it’s still almost certainly going to have worse performance than even the base models of the current gen consoles. If it took 8 years for Nintendo to create the next generation of Nintendo gaming then it would make sense. But we’ve been stuck playing Breath of the Wild or Smash Bros or Pokemon with dogshit performance and weak graphics for nearly a decade, and after all that all we’re getting is a slightly bigger screen, another controller gimmick that won’t be used much outside of Mario Party, and a performance upgrade that still is well outclassed by every modern gaming device on the market. Of course I’m excited for a better Switch, but it took WAY too long to get JUST a better switch.

Not even your ginormous PC handhelds are close to reaching that, so using it as a "negative" against Nintendo is beyond stupid. Like duh Switch 2 isn't gonna be a portable PS5, your PS5 needs 350 watts to run from a socket. So unless you wanna carry a console with a giant Ghostbusters proton pack behind you to power it then idk what to tell you. It's still gonna be a SIGNIFICANT jump in performance/fidelity compared to Switch 1 and calling it a "pro revision which is slightly better" is beyond disingenious when you clearly know nothing about it's capabilities.

Just as a reminder to many people who forgot or don't know. The reason they're calling it switch 2 is a direct lesson from the WiiU. When the WiiU came out the casuals thought it was an add on to the Wii and didn't sell well. The name switch 2 is to tell casuals directly this is a sequel console and not an add on to the original. Edit: ok so Max talks about it in the video. But something else i forgot to mention was that MANY game companies had extremely difficult times making games for the console that many were scrapped or completely ignored. In other words not a huge 3rd party library.

I'm surprised people are missing out on the potential of a mouse Joy-con. This isn't just for Mario Paint, Shooters will have a hell of a good time with these. With one hand you control it like a mouse, with the other one, like a regular Joy-con, and now you have exactly what PC Gamers wanted for a long time, which is the best of both worlds. Excellent movement with one hand and excellent precision aiming with the other.

Glad to have physical backwards compatibility. 8 years of switch ownership means I have a pretty extensive backlog. Also after 10 years of playing MarioKart 8 with friends/family I'm pretty excited for a new iteration. We get stacks of use out of the Switch after all these years so a better more powerful version is exactly what we want I'll almost certainly be getting one at some point this year - maybe let the first batch come out just in case there are any issues that need fixing. Could be a solid Xmas present 👍🏻.

Well, the new joycons seem to be capable of being used as a mouse when turned on their side, using the shoulder buttons as left and right click, so that's something new that could greatly improve how certain games play.

It's not the first time Nintendo has taken a "if ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, the Super NES was a logical evolution of the NES, each Game Boy after the original Dot Matrix console improved on what it started, and even with its 3D gimmick, the 3DS was just a more powerful Nintendo DS

And the way I see it, the decisions they’ve made with the Switch 2 are at least partly influenced by hardware like the Lenovo Legion Go, but also a logical new thing to add. Imagine games like indie VNs, a new Super Mario Maker, or a sequel to Game Builder Garage. Not to mention the idea of a first person shooter where you can use one Joycon to move your character, while using the other like a mouse to aim and shoot.

IMO people aren't discussing just how much of a game changer mouse support is. This opens up so much for the system's library. Think about how many games have never come to console because gamepad controls just wouldn't work, or the games that did and the controls are super janky because they had to shoehorn them onto a gamepad.

Mouse support from the get go seems like an intresting "gimmick", but I think it'd only work when playing in tabletop mode, I mean, you could theoretically use the Joy Con mouse while playing on home console mode, but it's obvious you need to place the Joy Con on a plain surface, like a table. Mouse support is not going to be a thing when playing in portable mode, which is one of the main features of the Switch systems

It's definitely not PS3 -> PS4. The Switch 2 is still using the same Nvidia ARM architecture, but using Ampere; Much like the Wii and Wii U still using PowerPC. PS3 and PS4 were two completely different architectures, with the latter being a closed-off PC. I think the comparison is warranted.

They had to probably officially announce it now so that 3rd party developers could announce that they are making Switch 2 games. Microsoft has that Xbox Developer Direct next week. I'm sure some Switch 2 games will get announced. Microsoft signed a 10 year deal with Nintendo over Call of Duty so that could be announced there.

Nintendo/Famicon to SNES/SFC was a pretty big jump. From 8bit to 16 bit the amount of new color access was huge and layers. Call me a nerd, but it was a pretty big jump for me at that time. I was there to during the Artari to Nintendo as well and that flat solid 1 to 2 color blocks on black going to NES was huge leap as well. Its underrated I think how much of a jump there was between those. However the biggest of course is SNES to N64 with 64 bit allowing 3d vectoring and real time particles. Also allowing for much better audio.

To be fair, the Super NES was a better NES, the Game Boy Color was just a Game Boy with a color screen and better hardware, the 3DS was a DS with a 3D screen, etc. I think Nintendo has gained, a somewhat false reputation in being an unpredictable and innovative company, not to mention that for many years their critics wished Nintendo would stopp adding gimmicks to their systems, though there are others that do believe that each new Nintendo systems has to have at least some feature that distinguishes from what came before, and in the case of the Switch 2 I think the "gimmick" this time are that the new Joy Cons will also serve as mouse controllers

Xbox pretty much died because nobody has talked about it for a while now, some people still say that the ps5 is just an actual glorified ps4 pro, even worse was the ps5 pro that some are still considering if it's worth the "upgrade". So yeah the switch 2 or switch "pro" was probably inevitable considering everything before Nintendo comes up with anything actually new for everyone else to copy/upgrade because usually that's how it goes.

Something I don't think people have talked about is that by merging the handheld and home console together, that they kind of trapped themselves into making small changes like this for better or for worse. Like as iconic as all their home consoles have been, only the NES, SNES and Wii have been really blowout successes while the others, while also beloved, did have struggles against the competition. Their handhelds are the only ones that really had any consistency when it comes to success. Merging them really helped give them that large audience and their own spot in the market. So to do something completely radical again would be to abandon 1 of the 2 sides of the audience they just got from the switch. That's why other than better hardware and mouse functionality, we aren't seeing anything too special. Also lets be honest, we wanted a hardware upgrade for a while. It did well holding its own this generation but it needed a boost really bad. Thankfully this new gen has hardly any noticeable changes visually, so they can still underpower the system but still get some decent looking games to support it. Who knows how the console market will look in a few years, but for now, this Switch 2 was pretty much the only logical thing they could do.

The Switch is an incredibly successful console that is incredibly behind in specs to the rest of its competition. The Nintendo Switch reveal reminded me of an i-Phone upgrade presentation. Here's hoping the emphasis is on performance this time around. With games like Final Fantasy Remake coming to the system, that's indicative of relatively how much more of powerhouse the Switch 2 is than its predecessor. Also the timing of this announcement is interesting due the scheduled Microsoft Developer Direct as well as the rumored Sony State of Play in February. Perhaps something Switch 2-related in regards to games (primarily from Microsoft) are also coming to the system which may be announced at these upcoming presentations.

The only reason people know to be excited are because of the leaks (evidence: I only know about the 'comparable to a PS4' internals because of this comment section). Going _just_ by the trailer, it's the Switch, but bigger. Anything to be actually excited about is going to be officially announced during the direct in April, which is months away. I'm not sure what there is to be gained from pretending there's no valid reason to be confused by this weird, casual teaser trailer for actual information later in the year, but I think it's probably 'nothing'.

The hate seems to come from people who didn't live through the 3DS and Wii U era. But Max did so this doesn't make sense. People complained the Wii U and 3DS were TOO different, and that the marketing was confusing. Here they are going for the exact opposite approach. An incremental update with a clear "2" like PS4 to PS5. People were fine with PS4 to PS5 having no changes, but now are pissed off Nintendo isn't trying something new? Because whenever they tried something drastically new after doing well the precious generation it shot them in the foot. These complaints are exactly what people have been wanted for years. This is just a typical Nintendo hate cycle.

Like every periferic ever was in Nintendo hystory. Starting from the GameCube. Thoses contrôler have adaptators on every subsequent console. The wii remote and every periferic worked on the wii U. And for the switch its just obvious why you can't use the wii remote it. But the GameCube contrôler can be used. Here it's literaly just an evolution, not a transformation. So I'm pretty sure joycons will connect as controllers that don't have the mouse abilities.

Since they didn't release info on the specs, the only innovation I could gleam from the trailer is that the Joycons seems to connect via USB port on the side as opposed to the sliding lock they currently have. It used to get jammed and wouldn't register inputs properly so I think at the very least the Joycons will feel better for the vast majority of people, especially folks with bigger hands. Nothing mind blowing, just a better Switch. I just hope we can actually get graphical fidelity on par with the PS4 pro and adjacent tech without any frame drops. It NEEDS to be better in every way if they want this thing to sell.

Like, to everyone talking about how it's "weird" that Nintendo isn't doing some big massive update, have we forgotten their handheld division? They came out with the DS Lite and then milked that design for the next ten years, well into the 3DS era. The same thing with the Gameboy. The GBP was a GB redesign and the Color was a more powerful Gameboy. The GBA had a different form factor but it was still Gameboy. And then the SP went back to the original basic form factor, just with a clamshell. The fact that the Switch 2 is a better Switch should surprise ABSOLUTELY NO ONE.

The Nvidia Tegra T239 chip that I mentioned in the stream is going to have DLSS4. The Switch 2 will have a native boost in power to play games how it was originally built before 3rd party studio development, but with way faster frames and smoother upscaling in resolution and graphics. Nintendo is going to legit be a powerful competitor to both Steam Deck 1 and 2 and other PC handhelds. Nintendo is going to be the most affordable and with the larger than life gaming library from all platforms: PC, Mobile and console. Nintendo is cooking and Microsoft and Sony needs to change their sh1t around and start being multi-platform friendly with the consoles that they already have and for Xbox Prime and PS6 respectfully.

Dlss 4 is significantly computationally heavier than previous forms of dlss a proprietary upscale solution based on the older CNN dlss model is most likely for a console that's going to be strained by low clocks, and the need for acceptble performance/battery life. So temper those expectations a little bit it's still going to have great upscaling capabilities but won't be the cutting edge of the cutting edge

@ But DLSS 4 is going to be o RTX 20, 30 and 40 Series chips. I see T239 working as it is RTX 30 Series Based and trying to make the similar FSR approach with their gpus and hardware. They did make over hundreds of millions of dollars of Nvidia tech and softwares go open source and GNULinux communities are eating it up good as we speak. It will mean making getting Anti-Cheats off the backs of Linux and GNU gamers and actually treating them important with SteamOS and many other Linux-based and BSD based kernels and softwares.

@ I think so. I think Nintendo's many years of focus on gameplay and not graphics is all about to pay off. Nintendo has been learning from mobile and laptop technology from Apple and Google. Those are already capable of playing console games, but Nintendo pushing for the console to have faster frames than higher resolution and Nvidia provided an RTX 30 Series based ARM chip to do exactly that. The sweet spot between performance and fidelity. Nintendo made the smart move to be artistic with their games than realistic. And that surely is going to pay off as Fortnite is not pushing realism. And anything pushing realism, well switch DLSS 4 on and it will do the job.

All I wanted was a more powerful Switch so Monolith can make a bigger, better Xenoblade. I don't need them to iterate and make some new stupid gimmick that could flop. It's just less exciting this time around since they already "perfected" the handheld/home console hybrid with detachable controllers. It's still cool but it's just not 2016-17 seeing this for the first time so it's not mind blowing or exciting. It's a very "safe" new system but after the WiiU fiasco, I can't blame them.

I think Switch 2 will be an era of playing it safe again before trying something crazy. I think that somethign crazy is definitely Switch 3 adding Mixed Reality as another Pillar, on top of Handheld and Docked. Pros: + Standalone headset capability similar to Quest 3 + Play AR + VR + Flatscreen games all within the display. + Casting or Docking to the TV to play flatscreen games + Provide AAA value to a space which is severely lacking frequent AAA games and massive untapped gameplay prospects. + Opens up VR affordably to the mainstream leveraging Nintendo's audience and allowing indie developers another option to develop within the space + Potential multi-format gameplay allowing Social Co-op VR/AR experiences(eg. That was definitely hinting at it having mouse-like functionality. You can even see the lens for the sensor near the pair button. Also the joycons will connect with magnets. The way you take them off is a mechanical arm thing that pushes them away from the magnets. I hope it feels good. I’m glad it’s the same but better and not gimmicky. Ive always just put up with that anyways. I’m just here for certain games. Can’t wait to see the next Zelda

Imagine if the Playstation 2 came out this year. People would be arguing the naming convention lol. Playstation 2? How lazy! it's just a stronger Playstation 1! Should have called it the Playstation Ultra!! The Switch in my eyes is the perfect type of console. Don't need to try something wacky. Make it stronger and backwards compatible and I am happy. Yeah but what have they done to Mario Kart 9, because it starts with 24 kart places on the Mario Bros circuit and you can see that part of that circuit is going to the left, but ahead you can see it is cordoned off with barriers and corner arrows going off the circuit to the right leading to what looks like a very long road.

Switch 2 will sell amazingly for the same reason Switch did. It converged their console and handheld markets into one audience, so you have Nintendo home console people waiting to buy it, and you have the Nintendo handheld people waiting to buy it. Hopefully they can flood the launch with enough supply to overwhelm scalpers. Oh and MK9 will be SW2 exclusive because they rarely lower prices anyway, so they don’t lose out on sales dollars by not releasing for SW1, they simply will get those sales later when people eventually upgrade, because they WILL get MK9 at full price whether it’s at launch or four years later.

Harada has said in some recent interviews that he wished for the Tekken series to be available on Nintendo consoles, the only Tekken games that have appeared in previous Nintendo machines, and there've been only 3, are spin-off titles. I think he said his team tried porting Tekken 7 to the Switch, but the console couldn't handle it I don't know if the Switch 2 can handle Tekken 8, but if Namco has managed to port Ace Combat 7 to the original Switch, perhaps they can do it

The Switch has received the best third-party support for a major Nintendo console, though I said it has a few caveats, most of the major third-party games on the Switch have been late ports of games such as The Skyrim, Witcher III, Doom and Doom Eternal, NieR: Automata, Persona 5 Royal, Dragon Quest XI S, Guiltty Gear: Strive, Ace Combat 7, GTA Trilogy, Read Dead Redemption, among others. The only third-party games that were designed for the Switch in mind were things like Bayonetta 3, Shin Megami Tensei V, Momotaro Dentetsu and Monster Hunter: Rise. We don't know how successful is going to be the Switch 2 in its first year, but considering how many units the Switch has sold (over 140 million to this day), I think many third-party developers are going to be on board from the beginning, but I think most of the things we'll see in its first year are going to be late ports (again) from titles that couldn' run on the original Switch, don't know if publishers and developers are hoping that most Nintendo-only players have been wating to play those titles on the Switch 2 and/or that some people are going to double dip. I feel like disconnect between real people and gaming media/influencers is huge. Gamespot etc. writing petty articles like "Switch 2's Reveal Feels Cold And Lifeless", meanwhile Switch 2 reveal video is #1 trending on KZbin second day in a row, and this is just one NoA channel, not even counting other Nintendo and 3rd party channels that uploaded the trailer. Seems like in general people are ecstatic about Switch 2.
