I used to play this on repeat to go to sleep as a teen, back in the iPod days. Many nights I cried myself to sleep to it. I forgot the name of this piece over the years. I’ve spent days looking for this song and cannot believe the feeling now that I’ve found it.

My Dad was in the Army when I was growing up; naturally, we moved a lot. I’m almost in tears listening to this. The uncertainty, nervousness, excitement, happiness, sadness...it’s all in this piece. Make new friends, say goodbye. Make new friends, say goodbye. Make new, say bye...God, how I wonder where some of those kids are today. Great composition.

There is one thing Max Richter does that other contemporary composers can't quite get the way he does -- the way he captures emotion. There is just something about each piece that portrays an emotion. Vaguely hopeful but dark, subdued -- like sun breaking through the clouds of a storm. Absolutely breath taking.

This piece is incredible. The song sounds hopeful, yet sad at the same time. It has the feel of being so close to something, yet having the sad feeling of knowing that you still haven't grasped it. It would go great in a movie if a person is reminiscing a memory of a loved one, seeing them so clearly, yet not being able to touch them. Knowing that once you had them, but now you don't. It is happy memories that come, yet the sadness that fills your heart when you realize that those moments are past, and will never be experienced again.

There's something hauntingly moving about this piece and the animation combined. Something about hidden memories, or emotions, something that hits me so hard. I feel a weird nostalgia listening to this, a nostalgia for something I've lost or rather never had. I can't exactly tell what. This piece is wonderful.

The one piece of music that does everything to me, sadness & melancholy being my nature. I've not found a piece of music like this that takes me far away in reflection & loneliness, feeling of emptiness. And seeing the child, reminds me of all those lonely years in a children's home. “If emptiness is endless, then everything rests in emptiness.”― Dejan Stojanovic, The Sign and Its Children.

I'm reading through the comments and it amazes me how this piece made me feel something so precise and it seems we all felt the exact same thing. Nostalgia, longing for something long gone or that we wish we had, happiness mixed with sadness, memories... People can feel the same way about certain pieces, but something so exact I've never seen. It's not just sadness it's a whole mixture of emotions and images. What a genius Max Richter is.

That's not how I felt listening and watching. I have just finishing watching for the first time and haven't had time to "think" but only register an initial "emotional" reaction and that is one which I must employ thinking to express but something like ... a child inadequately loved and of something buried inside, something shady, a child open and loving and something going wrong. Something tragic. Buried. That's using words to grope for the emotion which is what we have to do when describing emotions because to describe something means to use words and that is in the domain of the intellectual (thinking) realm. This explains why MUSIC more than poetry or literature affects us emotionally - because we can talk all day long (or all our lives, I suppose) attempting to use words to approximate this THING, whatever it is, this quantity, that music addresses precisely. And it's a GOOD thing that we attempt to understand our emotions, which we do by putting them into words, but we need to remember that our words (articulations, thoughts) are not the thing itself. This, too, is a good because it means that our "selves" are mystery novels which never end as long as we live. Remember Oscar Wilde's "Only the shallow know themselves"? Anyway, this video and song do not inspire in me anything close to nostalgia. The music seems to me, at any rate, so obviously DARK as to preclude such a feeling.

Listening to this on the road to Istanbul coming from Galipoli where there was once a slaughter of a generation. What astounds me about our species is how vile and yet beautiful we can be to each other. There is such a power in gentleness and kindness and the everyday mundane of our lives. I feel i will see much more beauty on the trip. This song to accompany me.

Despite the lack of spoken words, there is a set of lyrics for the song 'sunlight' by Max Richter. These are the lyrics I found. The sky before sunrise is soaked with light Rosy color tints buildings, bridges and the Seine I was here when she with whom I walk wasn't born yet And the cities on a distant plain stood intact Before they rose in the air with the dust of sepulchral brick And the people who lived there didn't know Only this moment at dawn is real to me The bygone lives are like my own past life, uncertain I cast a spell on the city, asking it to last The sky before sunrise is soaked with light Rosy color tints buildings, bridges and the Seine Max Richter is a living genius and a wonderful composer.

Writing this comment from Italy during the Covid19 quarantine, thinking about my life and about all the people who passed away because of the virus, to all the ill people, to all the money and jobplaces we lost and we're still losing..thinking about the life that we have to face after the virus, the social distancing, the fear of a hug or a kiss.. i think that nothing won't be the same as before.. and that all the fragile people (even psychologically) won't survive the crisis, it's a sort of Darwinism in 2020..i hope the best for everybody but i'm losing faith
