Max Romeo ist einer der ganz Großen des Reggae - und gleichzeitig Pionier des Genres. Seit 1965 ist der 1944 in St. Ann, Jamaika, geborene Musiker aktiv und hat mit seinen Songs Musiker von Prodigy bis Jay-Z beeinflusst. Bis heute tourt er durch die Welt und nimmt Alben auf.
Mit 14 Jahren verließ Max Romeo sein Zuhause und arbeitete auf einer Zuckerrüben-Plantage bei Clarendon. Mit 18 gewann er einen örtlichen Talentwettbewerb. Daraufhin zog er nach Kingston, um seine Musikkarriere zu starten. Zusammen mit der Gesangstruppe The Emotions, auf die er 1965 traf, hatte er zahlreiche Hits.
1968 machte Romeo erste Solo-Gehversuche. Sein Song "Wet Dream" (mit offensichtlich erotischen Lyrics) wurde ein großer Hit in Jamaika und kam auch in England in die Top Ten. Aufgrund seiner Texte durfte Romeo auf seiner ersten UK-Tour nicht überall auftreten. In den Siebzigern arbeitete er unter anderem mit Dub-Legende Lee "Scratch" Perry und schrieb 1978 in New York das Musical "Reggae" zusammen mit Hair-Produzent Michael Butler, in dem er auch mitspielte. 1980 sang er auf dem Song "Dance" der Rolling Stones. Daraufhin produzierte Stones-Gitarrist Keith Richards 1981 sein Album "Holding Out My Love To You".
Die Einflüsse Max Romeos auf die Musikwelt reichen weit über Reggae, Dancehall und Dub hinaus. Ob "Out Of Space" von Prodigy, das auf Romeos "I Chase The Devil" basiert, oder Kanye West, der für einen Jay-Z-Track auf ihn zurückgriff: Sie alle sind von Max Romeo beeinflusst.
