It wasn't ballsy; it was calculated. Grimm Guy knew that he didn't need a comm tower or a minor income lead to pull off what he was trying to do: proliferate his units, bait Kantbei into an all-out-attack, then punish with a game-ending counterattack. What he needed was raw numbers on the frontlines. Skipping out on the T Copter let him build an extra Battlecopter, and have it and the infantry he would've otherwise wasted capping Comm Tower Island in range and ready to fight/wall on the fronts where he needed them. Since both players wound up hitting the unit cap, Grimm's refusal to cap that comm tower actually gave him an effective unit count lead. Max had 2 of his 50 slots wasted on a transport and an infantry basically on vacation in the bahamas, whereas Grimm had 50 units ready to fight and/or wall.

I played Kantbei on September last year, it was a mirror match, and he made me look like an absolute beginner, so watching this with such a tier difference in COs picked I'm completely stunned, Grimm Guy being able to solve the puzzle laid by Max post-COP activation is HUGE.

Last time I checked, Grimm Guy was at like 39-9 win/loss ratio, with like half of his losses being recent at the time. Damn I thought his win/loss ratio would start becoming more even at like 50-20, not 50-11. edit: Not sure if Mangs missed it, but this match is also much more impressive since Max got the comm tower to the bottom right.

Okay so by now I have a theory on why Grimm is designed the way he is after seeing him in the right hands. The canonical reason for why Grimm has reduced defence is because of his careless daredevil nature, which feels weird when the other Yellow Comet COs are canonically some of the most competent, especially Sonia and Sensei (AW2 Sensei and not the senile old man from DS), but what if Grimm intentionally leaves himself more open to then strike back after the enemy left themself open to attack him? Grimms reduced defence means his units take more damage, which in turn generates more power charge for him. In the replay, Grimm Guy used Haymaker right after Kantbeis Max Force, meaning he could blast away anything he could see without fear of a power retaliation the next day which snowballed into an unbreakable advantage for him. Grimm isnt about getting the first strike and hoping you blast someone before he hits back, hes about getting up after a beating and dishing out an even stronger pummeling to whoever hit him first.

I'd like to add to that. Sensei and Grimm tag is called Grizzled Vets. Grimm is an old and strong CO. I think you're onto something with this being his strategy. Then Sensei is copying him a bit by pretending to be senile and just schalking his opponents.

He also definitely had an advantage that his better ranged game was able to force Max to finally go in on Grimm's terms or start getting picked off. I doubt they actually planned it this far out, considering some of their other balance choices, but it's definitely interesting seeing someone with the skill to properly steer it.

That was an amazing game. This matchup is so interesting - Grimm can't wall with his grimmfantry, at least in a typical sense - So instead, he needs a MASSIVE meat shield of perfectly positioned soldiers to eat every single attack, even if they get one-hit. It's not a matter of resisting an enemy's attack, its a matter of getting them to waste enough attacks on less important units so that his powerful ones can hit back with more power. The one artillery was genius as well - Once the fighting started, it went down fast. But as long as Max left it alive, it presented a massive, perpetual zoning threat. Grimm had to push up his artillery far enough until it couldn't be ignored, forcing Max to take the engagement against it. All of this makes me really wish we got dual strike COs in Reboot Camp, since they have some of my favorite designs out of all of the COs.

Grimm's personality is the kinda guy who wades in carelessly and starts slugging away. Yet, when playing as Grimm, to do well you must do the opposite of that. A careful positional game, threatening to dive in and deliver a fatal attack at any time, yet keeping solid enough that you can turn it around if the enemy goes after you first.

I faced Kantbei in the fog co elimination tournament last year and I picked a tier above him. And although I won, I struggled quite a bit. Mostly the tier difference carried me. The thing with Grimm is that any unit that Grimm is good with, his opponent also has that advantage, as an example, you said that Grimm battlecopters are really good since the lost defense doesn’t matter since AA already one shots them and the 30% firepower is really nice. But this also goes for his opponents, enemy copters shoot at units with-20 defense, while his extra firepower on AA doesn’t matter. So grimms advantages are by his very nature also his opponents advantages, his lack of walling capacity is another example, so that makes Grimm kinda suck in the hands of anyone not perfect

Grimm's DtD is like a ruleset change that nobody but Grimm is used to, it turns the game upside down for those who perceive it as just a big damage low defence CO, while forgetting that they are just as vulnerable.

Grimm's battle copters are so good because, even without Grimm's defence penalty, battle copters either take chip damage from the enemy (vs. tanks, infantry, counterattacking battle copters that just got hit by the player battle copter's first strike) or they die instantly (vs. anti-air, fighters, cruisers and first strike-ing battle copters). Taking a defence penalty on a unit like that isn't much of a penalty. The defence penalty hurts tanks and infantry more, as they're normally the units that have to take hits.

I believe that Max needs to play more aggressively early on. Kantbei's mechanics are fine but he's playing too careful which is the field that's closer to fair for Grimm. While I'd say that Max has an ok d2d edge, the biggest advantage comes from the threat of using his COP which he can use to bully Grimm around. So what he needs to do is force trades before Grimm is ready. This achieves two goals. One is that this prevents a huge ball of units building up. It prevents Grimm from building up that huge number of meatshields that he needs to fight Max. Two is that Grimm can potentially win in a huge slug out but he isn't going to win a scenario where there's a bunch of small fights because he'll have to play around Max's COP way more than the reverse. By being too patient, Kantbei threw away the main advantage that Max has against Grimm. I'd still rather be in Max's shoes but pure d2d is nothing compared to having both players jockey for position with the threat of an activation of Max's COP.

This match really does enforce the theory that Grimm needs to go up in tiers to have a better time. That, or Adder needs to go into Tier 3 out of sheer usage alone. Now that I think about it, I'd be curious to see who else Grimm would pick in a Tag match. Part of me says Sasha, because free income + shuts down enemy powers, but I know Grimm Guy's not one to take easy match-ups.

Get banned from a tier, get kicked to its BL, except OU and Ubers, then you go to Ubers/AG. That's what OP was suggesting happen to Adder - a use-based tier promotion despite not being too strong for Tier 4.

Also Pokémon has to rate around a thousand different mons each with dozens of possible movesets so it's only natural they'd need to simplify the tiering method. Advanced Wars has how many COs? Like, 20? No need to simplify what's already simple. False Equivalence. All moving Adder to tier 3 would do is make it so nobody uses him at all, nerfing something good (in this case by moving it up a tier) doesn't make bad stuff any better, it just makes the good thing less used.

True, I cannot stand modern comp Pokémon because OU and UU are miserable. All the cool UU Pokémon in Gens 5-6 are all RU and PU now, and anything that is too strong for those tiers is stuck in purgatory since every gen post 6 just introduces stat stick after stat stick. These stat sticks decimate balanced Pokémon, but then those Pokémon absolutely massacre the tiers below and or are stuck in purgatory where they are stuck in a tier where they have no impact. My physical tank will lose 65% HP from a neutral hitting and unboosted physical attack.

Boot Record is how many times a match has ended because a player has Timed out. I have over 100 Boots because I have a Love/Hate relationship with AWBW where I start 25 games and I think I can complete them all, only to end up completing 10 and getting kicked off from 15. The Boot Record is Permanent and while there is no Permanent Punishment for having so many boots, it does temporarily lock you to only playing up to 5 games at a time. The "Boot Record" is a counter for how many games you have lost from being timed out on your turn (Which is 7 Days in the Global League). It's more of a shame counter than a Badge of honor.

grimm has aruably one of the worst infantry overall (maybe even more than jess one). firepower on infantry is amazing to interrupt cap but at the same time, it doesnt serve much outside of footsoldier fight. furthermore, other unit can interrupt if needed while not optimal defense on the other hand make your capture hard to interrupt, leaving your unit with more hp to even deal more on counter attack. defense serve vs any matchup since infantry are also used as a wall which make them most likely to serve as a wall. there are no other unit that can wall as good as infantry since you won't have the economy to spam them so I don't think grimm has a strong capture phase. sturm infantry which has a 120/80 has a better capture phase even if you remove the perfect move

26:21 WTF was this turn? This turn looking like the actual battle of Verdun out here with how many units killed this turn. If this game has shown me anything is that you CANNOT play by Grimm's rules. If you get into a straight up 1 to 1 brawl with him, he will fucking make you pay. He might not win, but its gonna be a dangerous, scary match for you to try and win. Reminds me of that one map in AW Returns where you play as Colin against Sturm. In that hack, Colin loses defense in addition to his fire power, so Sturm is just fucking insta-killing anything he gets the first strike on since he goes by AW1 Campaign Sturm and you're just trying to hold on for dear life.

Is Grimmguy actually all about value in the end of day (like card game concept, such as magic or hearthstone). To me it seems like GG is just on another level on extracting every bit of value and using positioning in a way that he will get more value if opponent goes for all in. Very impressive as someone who doesn't play advance wars, but does understand it a little bit and likes strategy games. To Grimm guy it seems like Grimms stats are not a weakness, they are a feature.

I feel like there's 2 things going on here. One is that to do what Grimm Guy does, you have to have really clean mechanics. Two is that you're preying on a better understanding of the "new rules of the game" that you're imposing. Grimm is so double edged that more than conferring an advantage, he changes the way that you have to approach him when playing against a good Grimm player. In this case, Kantbei's biggest advantage with Max is the presence of his COP. Once he has it, his ability to bully Grimm out goes through the roof. However, Kantbei played too passively. Grimm Guy displayed excellent mechanics and steered Kantbei away from trades of vehicles until pretty late. Thing is, that's exactly what Kantbei had to force and he didn't even try that hard to do so. This is probably because against other COs, playing safe isn't a bad thing. With Max vs Grimm specifically, forcing early trades completely changes the dynamics in your favor to a great degree. By letting the forces build up, Max's movement buff ceased to really mean anything which turned it into a game where the player with the better mechanics won and that was Grimm Guy. So in order to win, Grimm Guy needed both cleaner mechanics and an understanding of how his opponent should play against Grimm so he could steer them away from that direction. Kantbei had good mechanics but not quite as good and more importantly didn't understand what winning against Grimm would look like which caused him to squander his CO advantage.
