MaxCatch Ultra Light, 3 weight Fly Rod and Reel. 🎣

Hello Folks. Please consider passing on this Rod. I'm doing a follow up review, I've used it less than 20 hours and gone through 3 tips, and now a main section broke on a 8-10 in brown just this last Saturday. I'll be doing a follow up video on how this rod is handling light use over several hours. I've needed to sand parts of the reel that were scraping parts of the fly line off, this was bad enough that the line began to cut my fingers when I stripped line in so I've had to buy a new line, (17 bucks, orange) and now the 1st rod section broke right clean in two! I'm reaching out to MaxCatch hoping that I just got a lemon, that said the way it broke seems like it had been shut in a door or something that REALLY weakened the carbon fiber butt section...first seciton, not sure what to call it. I'll upload a picture to my community page here on KZbin. This is my 2nd max catch rod, the first is a 100 dollar Euro Rod that i'll go ahead and do a video on this next week (taking it out tomorrow) The tip of that rod also broke off. I'm pretty darn disappointed with this rod so far, which sucks because it was such a fun rod to use! This is a good way to find out how the company will treat ya when things go badly though! Lets hope they back their product right?

Man, maybe you just got a bad one. For my money the ultimate back country fly rod is the Eagle Claw Telescopic 3w 6'6". Amazon like 30 bucks on Amazon with the reel. I've had one for a couple of years. Honestly it is about the only rod I use. I over lined a bit to punch the casts out a little further. The reel was not the best. Clicker went out on it but still was functional. I replaced the reel with a none clicker with a drag. Still going strong on the rod and ordered another just in case I brake it.

It is such a pity that you have had a bad experience with the rod. I fished last season here in New Zealand with a 6'6" Maxcatch v-lite 2wt. Caught 51 browns and rainbows up to 22 inches and 4lb. Rod was faultless. This season I am fishing the 7'6" 3wt, and caught several rainbows and browns up to 24 inches and 5.5lb. Once again, the rod has been faultless.

​@@michaelbehr6483I'm considering the 6'6" 2wt V Light. Do you over line yours? Absolutely no information on the V-light on YT or elsewhere. Could you please speak of yours?

​@conlaiarla yes, I use a 3wt floating line on my 2wt. Very easy to cast. My armspan is 2.06m, so I chose a short rod for small overgrown streams. I do however prefer my 3wt 7'6" v-light. Using a 4wt floating line. Casts very well.

Its taken me a while to get it set up the way I like. Kinda. I've attached the neck strap, and put the net magnet on that. Its hard to get it connected up after pulling it, but at least its out of my way now.

Is this the 2/3 or the 3/4 reel? Is this the eco line reel?

The tip is extremely fragile. I have broken it twice getting ice off my guides. Max Katz has replaced it both times, but I have also fixed it myself. Another thing to note is that the real line guards are sharp, so when you pull line out of your real quickly, it will score the line and make it jagged and rough. Enough so that it will cut your fingers as you strip Line back. I also fix this myself by using a metal file and taking the sharp edges off the real line guides. I'm working on a follow-up video to discuss the weaknesses of this combo and how to solve them.

Have you tried maxcatch v top rods?

Not exactly. I was working with MaxCatch to have one sent to me for review, but after going through so much trouble with this rod, and their Euro rod (which is essentially the same as a v top) I called it off. They build a cheap-ish rod, but my 65 dollar Cabela's Bighorn rod is not only cheaper, but is just a better rod all around. And for the same price as a maxcatch v top you can get a redingon, or better yet an Echo. I love my echo rods!
