Thanks, Arthur & Max! Great conversations. I love worked and lived in SG for a little over 9years working in 3 different MNC firms but was too lazy to even apply for PR 😅 Now, I regretted that a lot haha. I missed SG much. My friend got a PR after over a year of working and living in Singapore, then after converted to becoming a Singaporean after more or less 7 years I guess. He’s lucky and partly because he’s half Chinese with last name and looks and speaks more Singaporean. I miss all of Singapore. I stayed in a nice condo for only SGD 2.8k with 3 br, 1 storage, and balcony. I got lucky. It’s just a small one close to the East Coast Road and so in love with the neighbourhood. My favourites of all the other 7places I used to loved, they’re all great but the East Coast is my fave of all. ❤

One of the biggest problems with foreigners trying to gain Singaporean PR or citizenship is that they barely ever try getting to know the local people. They come here, form their own little expat enclave communities, enjoy the infrastructure, while having no interest in the Singaporean people. In fact, 99% of travel vlogs I see regarding Singapore never talk about Singaporeans at all; it's always the same stuff about MBS, Gardens by the Bay, Changi Airport, and the food. Just a massive shame, and I've no doubt the Singapore Tourism Board has had a part to play in this. So good on Artur for at least making some effort to integrate into local culture. It's too bad that the government prioritises the wealthy and influential over all others. I know far too many wealthy people who have gotten citizenship despite showing little to no interest in mingling with the locals. And the fact that the government doesn't even want to implement mandatory English tests for PR and citizenship is a joke; so much for multiculturalism and racial harmony!

One of the factors they hardly gave, especially the Westerners are, most westerners PR or SC renounce their PR or citizenship and fly back to their country for retirement, what sg govt wants are foreigners who can settle down and built a family in SG. This way it will promote population productivity and economy as well

It's really difficult to get PR and citizenship in Singapore these days. I came in 1994 and got my PR in 1996 but I did not get citizenship. I am 61 years now and don't have much money in my CPF so I don't think I will be granted citizenship. It's very sad. I've seen highly educated folks get rejected even after owning private condo and 10+ years in SG.. Having a connection by marriage and being of child bearing age is a factor. Then it comes down to Country, education, and special attributes that make you stand out. No family connection and average Joe is not going to easily get PR. In my case being married to Singaporean, attended NUS for MBA, and multiple patent holder I got it first shot. But, I know several people with similar profile but not married to local and did not get it.

In general, Singaporeans are not fond of foreigners who come here to obtain permanent residency or citizenship. Foreigners are a double-edged sword for Singapore - if there are too few, the country may lack competitiveness; however, if there are too many, it can become too competitive with Singaporeans. While the presence of foreigners may lead to higher salaries for Singaporeans, their influx can also drive wages down due to an oversupply of labor.

As far as I know, there are long check lists that needs to be considered for PR or Citizenship. These days it is not easy to become a PR. Many people have been waiting for longer than 9 years. Years ago, it was easier, with some people being approached to take up PR and indeed citizenship for selected PR's. Showing a commitment and ability to add value were list items that I would expect. Adding value is a vague term, but it can be very specific. Race does play a part, but then Singapore is a managed society to me. Singaporeans are sensitive to an increasing population and this has no doubt in my mind played a part in toughening up the issuances of PR and Citizenship. There are plenty of people wanting to establish themselves in Singapore and competition for places has increased markedly.

It wasn’t so long ago a reporter asked the PM about the import of foreign workers again after Singapore had lifted all Covid restrictions, the PM replied that Singapore now has very strict standards in selecting these foreigners, as Singapore has been flooded with more than a “billion” applications for PR ...you read right...he did say 1 “billion” applications...it was on the news, initially I thought he was using a hyperbole to stress the overwhelming applications from foreigners, but then on second thought, it couldn’t be too far fetched as people from China and India are eager to come here...as well as those from our neighboring countries....

To be honest, Malaysia and singapore are tough places when giving out PR. But in Malaysia it is not properly controlled, it is targeted for poor and Muslim countries like Bangladesh and indonesia as far as I know. Because many poor indonesians with little skills have red identity cards which is PR. I am not sure if it is corruption or legit. The home ministry is secretive. Several years ago, a home minister gave out 100 citizenship to Bangladeshis. Many were upset with the non transparent process. The worst was this home minister gave out pr to zakir naik, a person wanted by India. He is a fugitive.

Indonesians with red IC is quite common as they either marry local or been working here for more than 20 years, malaysia is the nearest country & have similar language, religion & culture to indonesia. It make sense they would come here to find work. I've never heard about the 100 Bangladeshis & find it hard to believe. Most i know just want to earn & go back to their country as they have families back home & to them the cost of living here is high. Unlike indonesians, they are not able to adapt to the malay muslim culture. From what i know there's a lot of non muslims who 'marry' vietnamese or people fr PRC but unable to obtain citizenship for their spouse because most cant get a divorce from their 1st wife, mainly due to $$, houses, business issues. And here non muslim cannot legally have more than 1 wife.

As a Malaysian Muslim, even I am not happy at how PR is easily given to Muslim foreigners. I’d rather they give it equally no matter their religion as long as there is transparency on how they obtain it in the first place. Like in Singapore it causes the market to be more competitive which I think it’s fair, in Malaysia it’s the total opposite, we often get ‘pests’.

If you have a Western passport, you do not need a PR. Because the only reason you want PR is to change jobs easily and for the benefits. So please, not getting a PR as a Westerner is more of a privilege problem than it is of an actual problem.

Traditional career choice as a part-time job, leading to full time job before rewriting the application for PR in singapore(pay-money). Stable-income source(traditional career paths of guaranteed income-performance, not arts, not sports, not internet, not ...) with experience(proven trackrecord of bringing in the money) and a lifestyle of spending and being able-to-spend(disposable-income, purchasing-power). Unless $USD200k per-annum with promise(have lattitude for rise-raise) and low-debts(loans for items like property) and some savings(will not be living on the streets, maybe a few hundred of those K.s or G.s or ...), ... otherwise, use a lower category of work-permit, work-pass, employment-pass, ... investment($USD10m passed)
@engchoontan8483
@engchoontan8483 Жыл бұрын
There are plenty of people who think $USD+1m in cash(not merely net-worth) for retirement-funds is a big-deal and they feel (self-)entitled about that number. The insurance-agencies in Singapore recommends that Singaporeans retire with more than that amount to be comfortable. A typical private-apartment is already about that amount. Unless you can survive on "drinking"-air without any left for utilities(water, electricity, ...), ... such people usually feel disappointed and aggrieved when they fail in their attempts because they feel asia should be cheaper and chinese lifestyle choice should be lousier and ...(bigotry, prejudice, bias, ...) It is not advisable for those who depend on such numbers to even attempt anything more than a working-permit. Types of $USD+1m, millionaires(net-worth, liquid - savings after no-debt, income per annum, spending per annum = 4 types). The Amex-centurion card of many decades put the definition of a self-entitled millionaire at spending $USD+1m per year on that one card alone (not my fault for defining millionaires). Those "hopefulls" should not advertise themselves as millionaires or rich if they fall short of that american(not singaporean) benchmark. No bragging rights even if you are a millionaire in singapore.

u can fully disagree with me here,i dont mind,but personally for me,i dont think a foreigner being a PR/nationality of sg is a good thing... 1st - of all,you already know the competition for it,so regardless how blend u are in a society,still have that outsider feeling from the national resident in someway 2nd - sg land is not that much,already know the housing sq/ft based on price,plus the goverment need to put other building to accommodate other facility as well 3rd - if you are working,fine to stay as long as you like,to settle down,i really should think foreigner re-considered or talking to other PR and check how the local feels about it.. 4th - race,religion are really frowned upon to be talking in debate as it will breakdown the harmony of multi-cultural society..even if it do come up as a stand up joke,try watching the math jokes by Rishi Budrani..coz really if u ever did it,u are walking on a thin line.. 5th - in a way,i do hope he get a PR by the SG gov if he really contribute to the country economy/workforce/knowledge etc..other than that,i hope u re-consider the choice of getting a PR..bcoz malaysia & SG to getting a PR/nationality is not that easy,to as far as i know..
