Gorky, a human tragedy. At first he was on board with the revolution, then he realized what was actually happening to Russia as the "empowered" proletariat became victims to one of the most cruel and oppressive governments ever created under Lenin. Gorky then made it his goal to try to help as many people as he could deal with the horrible circumstances of the regime, at this point turning his back on what communism had become. He fled to Capri, Italy, still in contact with Lenin, whom he had been friends with and greatly admired. Lenin mocked him in a sharply worded letter. When Stalin took over he was lured back, and a strange and sad change came over him when he was essentially made a puppet of the government, promoting Stalin's ideas while authors committed suicide out of despair. Maybe in some naive way he thought he could still do good and save someone. Deep inside he knew everything was lost. It's believed that he was poisoned to end his life. Nadezhda Krupskaya, Lenin's wife, who is in this film clip, was also said to have been poisoned by Stalin. Russia had the chance to do it right, but it ended in complete tragedy for these early players. In a few years Trotsky too, would be done away with.
