how does maxime know that 0:51 is takeover/role switch?

If you are leading and your follower suddenly starts to lead you know it instantly. If you don't have some fixed idea about your role you can give up the lead and take it back whenever you feel ready.

+Mike Evans yea but from the video it looks like he starts following from the instant she puts her hand on his chest, how does he know that she didn't just do the connection? my question is hard to explain, but usually the point of takeover is quite easy to spot but in this case it looks like he knows its coming 2 seconds before she actually leads the spin.

I think (though of course I'm not him and I think you have to be there to feel it) but I think when she puts her hand on his chest (actually he puts it there) he becomes open to the possibility, and once she has circled round and then controls him using his arm at 0.53 the transfer of control is complete. I agree with you, it's a really impressive and smooth transition. I dance both ways at ballroom, and I think I sense that my follower is taking over long before they disengage the hold and switch. Certainly long before anyone watching would spot it. It happened only yesterday in Foxtrot and I was even left wondering myself what it was I felt that initiated the change. All I know is that I'm not in any doubt.

She takes over the lead by body-leading him backwards. It's really clear to me, visually, what's happening, and was I'm sure just as clear to Maxime.
