The reign of Maximilian III Joseph would see an end to Bavarian great-power politics, and instead focus mostly on internal issues. The electorate was deeply endebted, and he therefore began to vigorously promote industrial and agricultural endeavors to get the economy back on its feet. Maximilian also launched reforms of the legal system, enlarged the freedom of the press, and founded new educational institutions. This, among other things, has earned him the epithet “the much beloved”.

Your videos are so well made, that I am in shock of how underrated your channel is. Keep producing content like this and surely you will grow. Would love to see a video / series on the 30 years war from you! Thank you for creating :)

Nice video. At 06:22 the picture is a little bit misleading, the shown crown jewels are the ones of the Kingdom of Bavaria (1805-1918), they didn’t exist at the time of Maximilian III.

Thanks! I couldn't find any representations of the old ones. I think they've been destroyed at some point, don't completely remember though.

@@kingsandthings There were none, as far as I know. Prince Electors had no specific crown jewels (except for the ceremonial "elector's hat", but that wasn't a real crown and it wasn't really used anymore in the 18th century). I think they only got a real crown after they became Kings in 1805. (But even that wasn't necessary. Since such newly established Kingdoms had no medieval tradition, they didn't fancy old fashioned coronations and crowns like in Great Britain, France, Russia or the Scandinavian monarchies. The Bavarian Crown was never worn by a king, only placed at his side at important state occasions. The Kingdom of Saxony never got a real crown, it was only depicted in some paintings and coats of arms.)

“…as well as the abolishment of the Jesuit order and consequently also their censorship of the press. These policies do not reveal a lack of religious piety however, as the Elector was himself deeply religious.” It seems a requirement for the deeply religious/conservatives of the Catholic Church to be at odds with Jesuits even today. I’m sure there is a strong faction to canonize Pope Clement XIV.
