This is a really interesting video and only someone with such a large, varied collection can carry out these tests for us. So, thank you for that. I got my first button lock this week, a CJRB Pyrite and I'm very impressed with it all round. I'm even happier after watching this video.

Thanks for running these knives through the test! I was originally concerned with these failures and then realized i probably wouldn't be using any of these in a manor that would cause that type of failure. It is nice to know the limitations though, just in case. Thunderbird is still on my BIN list when it comes back in stock.

very valuable test. Thanks for that. in real world use, the only conceivable situation where I might encounter this is when cutting up cardboard boxes while unsticking the blade from a cardboard cut. This has not yet happened to me, but I'm glad I saw this test and the explanation for the solidity of the CJRB mechanism of its button locks.

I noticed the smaller knives seem to pass as the longer knives may be a potential failure. The lock area is coned on Civivi cjrb is a square which is much better they need to make all button locks like cjrb IMO I know civi knives would have a failure on a couple knives but I do want to get that up dated Racoon. I knew the Thunder bird would have this problem I passed on it. Great vid 💯

@Sludgecaked Yeah I know, the plunge lock acts as the detent, or is supposed to when working properly. There is a small knotch in the blade for open and closed position. Both are really shallow for most plunge lock designs which is probably the reason for these issues. The Thunderbird has a Trek lock that's similar to a plunge lock design but goes deeper through the blade providing more contact area, only downfall is its a 2 piece design resulting in the button itself unscrewing from the shaft then you lose everything(which is why they give you 3 extras in the box lol). Plunge locks in general are ok but probably my least favorite, you have to keep those little slots on the blade clean for crisp action. The ProTech Malibu and similar aren't too bad but the Half Face Blades button lock design is amazing, Spyderco Smock button lock is as well but that's actually a compression lock, and the Brown Lock could be awesome but I've heard of all kinds of issues with them as far as execution (mostly lock rock and lock failures) which is a shame for what they cost.

I had a standard Pyrite with steel scales. It was smooth and worked very well, but the knife wasn’t quite right. Then I tried a Pyrite with titanium scales. It was a little lighter, but more importantly, it shifted rhe knife balance a little toward the blade. It feels much better deploying and using and, and it is a little lighter in the pocket. It made a much bigger difference than I expected.

This was a much needed test to show everyone. I've found all my CIVIVI buttonlocks to be excellent. I had problems with 2022 Kizer buttonlocks failing with a spinewhack. The worst was the Begleiter XL.The lockup was an angled surface on the button side against an angled surface on the blade. It would just slide out under pressure. On inspection, the lockup looked like it had been hand-tuned and incorrectly ground with too much angle at the factory. I'm working out how to fix it -- I'm using a Dremel with diamond tips to very slightly reprofile the contact angles, without completely destroying the lock. Theres not much material to work with. Good luck to me. I'm too stubborn to go for a warranty return.

I just bought a Civivi Altus and after just one day the button lock gets stuck in the depressed position, preventing the blade from locking either open or closed. A hard tap against the frame will usually be enough to knock it loose, but it continues to stick every time it is depressed. I like the knife, and when it does lock it seems pretty sturdy, but I should not be having this issue with a brand new knife after just one day.

Came here with a CIVIVI Qubit being shipped to me currently. Glad you gave it more scrutiny. Great Vid. Easy to watch. Your audio is clear. Testing Negatives: Yes, you need to build a Knife-Testing-"Jig" to test (a knife/)knives for comparison. (Bad) Variations which you seem to be introducing: [Hitting different parts (wood has different densities in the same piece) of the Table; you also have non wood materials which you may accidently hit |Knife angles at hit (roll, tilt, and yaw), is different |Speed you are swinging the knife| Your hand, arm, muscles, etc: are not the same each swing]. A jig would remove these; you hit a button or pull a string and the Jig hits the same spot, angle, rigidity, etc every swing. For general purposes, you nailed it. Similar to what you already mentioned, this test on a knife is like saying a range of handguns are considered unsafe if the mag releases when you pistol-whip a person. You know, the ole' pistol-whip test.

A good button lock can be one of the strongest on the market. But much like a bad lockback, some loose tolerances can make a really strong lock very weak. An example of a overbuilt button lock would be the Gerber 06 auto. The plunge lock on that thing is massive.

Unfortunately in the UK, any knife that has a blade that you have to unlock with a button or catch to close, is illegal to carry in public. I have a multi tool that has a 3” locking blade, and if I was caught in public with it on my person, no matter I it’s in my pocket, or in a tool bag, I can be arrested and fined. Also FYI, I think you will have much better luck cutting things, if you turn the knife round and have the sharp side pointing down 😅😅😅

MW.. Hello from NJ (USA) . Please excuse my ignorance, but what is the reasoning for locking blades being illegal ? Also , I assume fixed blade knives are illegal ? Does blade length matter ? Thanks. or is "cheers" appropriate ?
@hugheffo
@hugheffo Жыл бұрын
@@jasonh8043 As we have very small amounts of gun crime in the UK, due to the complete ban on guns, apart from the odd shotgun for farmers. The main weapon of choice for the young gangs is knives. The basic rule is you can only carry a penknife (knife that folds in the handle), with a blade length of no more than 3”, and it cannot lock open or open mechanically or with the force of gravity. No daggers no fixed blades, no lock knifes, no flick knives, no “zombie knives” (Rambo type ) Nothing with a serrated edge. If you are caught in possession of a knife. The maximum penalty is upto 4 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.
@PC64292
@PC64292 Жыл бұрын
@hugheffo I haven't read up on it in a while but I seem to remember that the legislation around "zombie knives" got as far as any green knive or one that has anything to do with zombies i.e a knife with zombie killer writen on it. Unfortunately, our knife laws are stupid as who's going to use a £100 pocket knife as a weapon when you can go to poundland and get a kitchen knife for a quid. I personally have had a pocket knife on me every day for 20 years now and somehow never stabbed anyone (in anger.) It's just another case of blanket bans that don't actually stop criminals they just stop ordinary people.

The most concern I have is not whacking the back of the knife or batoning, but the moment when you hit something with a reverse grip. Or make a heavy frontal thrust. My civivi button gives reliable vibes, but I can't stop worrying if I imagine a solid hit with it, will it hold or not.
@stevelindsay3643
@stevelindsay3643 7 ай бұрын
It is a very crucial test, to say the least. Pocket knives in particular are used for everything one can think of on a daily basis. When it is a survival or a predicament where the pocket knife is all you have as a tool to work with that requires you to hit the back edge of the knife with perhaps a stick used as a hammer or something along those lines, you need that blade to stay locked. Who knows what situation may arise and you need to put your pocket knife under extreme conditions, you want to know it's safe and can handle a little abuse. Understanding, the weak point in the button lock will be useful when purchasing a knife. I hope the knife manufacturers will return to the drawing board and resolve this failure point in the button lock mechanism. I want to add. I can see plenty of situations where hitting the back edge to get through a tough material would be very handy. It is important the knife hold up to a strike on the back edge of the blade and not unlock.

Button locks wouldn't surprise me if they failed because every one I own looks like there is barely any engagement area with the blade tang. An actual surprise lock fail to me was my Medford Slim Midi (a frame lock) considering how much they cost. That said, I don't really consider spine whack lock fails to be a serious problem because in normal use the direction of force is towards the open position. I don't make a habit of purposely doing things to MAKE my knives fail so I'm personally not worried in the least.

Did you watch the video! Lol...that was his point not trying to fail these knives by whacking over and he wacked reset as you would normal usage then hit randomly as he said it may be some knives and some are solid. However a failure on a Medford slim lock bar is more possible if that lock bar isn't engaging completely with the lock face, it could just slide over and fail. However I get what your saying by just using the knife normally not as a pry tool or anything else. puncture and slicing 💯🤙🔥. P.s. I'm not trolling your comment if you took it that way 🙏

Like trying to cut a truck tire off of a rim. This is a very dangerous kind of fail because it would fail while you have a full grip on the knife.

A button lock is just not as strong as a say a back lock, or a triad lock, etc. Its one of the weaker lock systems. But it should be sufficient for everyday tasks. However like with the raccoon (1st version), a person reported an injury when cutting up boxes. Just me personally I look at button lock knives as more fidget monsters than users. If I am going to carry a knife and expect some hard use, its going to be something like a Spyderco Back Lock.

Honestly as long as my knife doesn't fail while I'm actually doing daily knife things, it's good enough for me. If I dropped it and the lock failed then I'm not concerned because my hand would not be on the knife. I just can't see an actual scenario where someone is cutting boxes, cutting zip ties, rope, etc and then have that lock fail. Does anyone have an example where they were using the knife as an actual knife and had a button lock fail? If so, what exactly was the task you were doing when it failed?

I have had frame locks fail before but that was due to a week opening were the lock didn't go in as much as it was supposed to.

I've had a couple of button locks and I've always found it strange that poeople treat them like unreliable--- until one day I took two of them apart and find out what was going on inside - on the first one, the locking bar was all messed up - mae out of mild steel and ver maliable. The other one tho had a lot of small chips - it was too hard and brittle, thus repeaded hits on the spine woud have it crack and cip like ceramic.

@Gman1024 I've had a bunch over the years but the ones that stayed in rotation so far is...Maxamet PM2, s90v Manix2, Microtech Anax, Buck Marksman and 112trx, Custom 110 drop point, Cold Steel AD15 and AirLite, s35vn Case trapper, ESEE Avispa, Rosecraft Swayback, and just ordered the Vosteed Grind to carry with my fixed blade (either Benchmade Leuku or ESEE Laser Strike). My favorite of all time by far though is my Half Face Blades Crow Folder, it's a full titanium integral button lock with sealed bearings.

I have very simple test for knifes: will you grab your knife with hand and hit wooden table with all your strength and not worry that it will cut your fingers? Yes? It's good knife for hard work(as it also test overall quality of knife eg side to side wobble etc after such hit. No? It's fancy knife that you can use to cut paper or use as finger fidget. Button lock will never pass that test for me. I will buy knife with button lock for collection purpose but it will never be my daily drive. Yeah I don't "stab" stuff with my knife but when time come to do it, I want to be sure that I don't cut my self doing it. Also Button lock are not safe in their own design as engagement surface for them is like super small compared to even linear lock and that surface is getting worn out with every open/close more than in any other knife. On new knife or on one that is barely used it can feel good but we can't deny that it will get lose over time as we can't skip physic and material wear.

I've never understood the purpose of a "spine wack test" for any folding knife. I've never understood what forces it's supposed to represent under reasonable use of a pocket knife. Battoning on a folder is not reasonable use of a folding knife nor is prying. 🤔 I appreciate you mentioning the proper technique of using a folder to split wood in an emergency... because hammering a folder through a log is just a good way to cause a failure in your tools on purpose. 😢 All that being said... I use my folding knives to primarily to perform draw cuts or push cuts. A pinch grip on the blade near the spine to do detailed cuts with the tip, cleaning under my nails, or using my thumb on the side of the blade as a depth stop to cut down a cardboard box with items in it. I've even sliced the occasional piece of food. I have a medium Countycomm Titanium EOD breacher bar I carry in my EDC for tasks not appropriate for a folder. It's a solid slab of Titanium ground into a roughly (not sharp) chisel point. Perfect for prying pallet nails out of polypropylene pallet jack wheels, prying open cardboard boxes with excessive adhesive, scraping stickers off flat surfaces... etc. Highly recommended for anyone who has ever been tempted to pry with their knife tip.

Ive had the exact same thoughts, i was hoping this video was going to cover the actual strength of the button lock. As in how much weight it can withstand, similar to the tests cold steel perform.

Liner locks are the worst, usefull only where there is no space for other types, like on multitools. I have a scar by a liner lock, always avoided if possible. Frame locks are a little bit better, hand grip works like a secondary lock, simple and effective for light duty knives, Ilike them. Button locks are medium reliability for me. Back locks (better modern middle locks) are very good some of the best but proper lock geometries are a must, quality variations. Balisongs are good, if build properly with tough pivots, human errors do not count in cuts... not fault of the knife. Triad, scorpion and atlas by Cold Steel are the best proven by me. Sometimes there are also pleasant surprises like the leverage lock on the CRKT provoke karambit, very cool lock and it seems highly reliable. 🇮🇹
