Helen was brought up with the heritage of Swedish Folkmusic, just like I also was.. Her Mother sang in the same choir as my parents for decades !! Helens control and voice is something else :D // I believe Björn and Benny from ABBA wrote this song especially for her to sing. it`s from a Great Drama, telling us about the hardships so many emigrants experienced when leaving Sweden for America during some horrible famine years.. like 1/3 of the Swedish population did between 1850-1920 ..

FYI! In the middle of the 19th century Sweden had a population of 3.5 million inhabitants. 1.2 million of them emigrated to the US! Most of them ended up settling in Minnesota! "Kristina från duvemåla" is a musical written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson based on a series of novels by Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg about a family's poverty-driven migration from Sweden to America.

The story about the woman in the choir is amazing too. She has been at the back of the choir every time but at this performance someone got sick so she was heading up at the front. As the lights are strong and Helen did never sing like this in practice to save her voice, she had never seen all those expressions, that is why she look like that. It is the first time she see Helen live it all out and the first time she actually get all of that, not only the voice.

In the end of this clip you talk about ”the Swedish soul” and the story that the song is about is written by a famous author Wilhelm Moberg and these four books are a part och our legacy and history. The singer Helen Sjöholm was young when did this role and was kind of adopted as the whole nation´s little sister after this. Now she´s over 50 but still has a very privileged part in the Swedish culture. She´s kind of a musical daughter of Björn and Benny / from ABBA , they wrote this musical / too, being the only woman in a band that Benny Andersson gathered, consisting of I believe 17 older gentlemen and her. You can google Benny Anderssons Orkester if you are interested. It´s a feel-good band though, nothing as dramatic at this. Actually they are extremists in that way, it´s kind of sadistically positive and optimistic, mostly. Very fun, but probably incomprehensable for a not Swedish-speaking audience. I actually made a hasty interpretation of this song and published it in the commentary section of it´s video, it´s very different from this song but quite worth listening to. Perhaps even disturbing in it´s chaotically positive way... "Nu mår jag mycket bättre" with BAO, "Now I fell much better!" kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y56lfnuIYtSfb9U

@@MaxSujyNorden The musical is written by Björn and Benny from Abba (They appeared in the audience). The story is about a Swedish family that emigrates from Sweden to America in the 19th century due to poverty. They settle in Minnesota, like many other Scandinavians. However, Kristina's brother-in-law Robert had gold fever and traveled to California with his friend Arvid. Things didn't go so well on that trip and after 4 years Robert comes back to Minnesota without his friend. He is tight-lipped about what happened, but Kristina sees that he has Arvid's watch with him and asks why he has it.... The song "Guldet blev till sand" (the gold turned to sand) is the answer to that question

When it comes to musical theater, I always prefer English over foreign languages because I have no clue what is being said.. As such, I own the Kristina live from Carenegie Hall. Yes, it's a live in-concert of the musical with applause. Unfortunately Kristina Fran Dumavala NEVER made it to Broadway. I don't own the sweedish original cast recording. Unlike Kristina, Chess, another musical by the same sweedjsh composers, it was produced in English first with lyrics by Tim Rice and the music by Benny and Bjorn from sweedush group ABBA. In fact, Chess had a concept album before it was staged in London in 1986. However, One Night in Bangkok and I Know Him So Well became huge radio hits and covered several times from popular artist. It went to Broadway in 1988 after London. However, Chess PA Svenska dud not happen until 2002. However, Tommy Korberg was in the original London 1986 cast, the 1984 album, snd then got to finally perform it in Swedish in 2002. The sweedish version was a drastic re-write of the Broadway and London version. In fact, it seems like the song order changes since the script for Chess has been problematic with the 1986 cersuon being sung through like Les Miserables and Broadway more like a traditional play-musical. The Australian, Broadway, and Sweedish original productions were all drastically differen with the Sweedish having two powerful songs that aren't in English spoken productions -- "He is A Man He Is A Child" known as "Han är en man, han är ett barn." It was only within this past year it was recorded in English. You might have reacted to this. Unlike Chess, however, Kristina Fran Dumavala, is not as well known throughout English-speaking countries. It was only performed once as a concert at Carenegie Hall. It has never been fully staged as a musical in The United States. However, the one thing about Kristina Fran Dumavala and Chess is that both musicals are performed more as a concert as opposed to a fully staged musical with sets and costumes. As for Kristina, it has more of an operatic symphonic feeling whereas Chess has a more pop-rock feeling. Anthem, from Chess, probably is the most dramatic song from Chess. Whereas if you listen to songs like The Arbiter, you may feel like you're living in the 1980s pop world. However, the original concept album (from London) came first. However, Murray Head, who plays The American has a mediocre harsh voice. I prefer the 2001 Danish cast (sung in English) which has most of the London score. Unlike Chess which has several English speaking recordings (1984 concept, 1988 Broadway, 1994 Chess In concert (performed in English in Gothenburg Sweeden), 2001 Danish Cast (Stig Rosen, Emma Kershaw, performed in English), and 2009 Chess In Concert Royal Albert Hall (Adam Pascal, Idina Menzel). That's 5 versions you csn listen to in English. Kristina only has 1 recording in English, Kristina at Carnegie Hall.

Please listen to Peter Jöback - Guldet blev till sand. It's from the same musical (Kristina från Duvemåla). I've seen other channels react to a video with english subtitle, you'll probably find it if you search for it.

Yeah, Sjöholm is a hard name to pronounce when you don't have our "sj" sounds in your language, and not the "ö" either, and those two in combination makes it extra hard. A way to pronounce it, which isn't exactly correct, but close enough, is if you use the beginning of like "Sherwin" or "Sherlock" and say it like "Sherholm", then it's easier for you to say, I think. "Sjö" means "lake" in Swedish, and "holme" is an "islet", btw. I prefer the one in Swedish, but that might be just my bias, being Swedish. The English on feels more like a beautiful and great performamce, while the one in Swedish feels more...raw, like a genuine cry from the depts of her soul. Both are excellent and emotional though. The lyrics to this song is written by one of Sweden's most well known and outspoken atheists, Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA (2:13). Yeah, that song is a part of Swedish culture. The story it's based on, how 1,2 Swedes emigrated to North America, about 20 % of our population, is an important part of our history. The book series the musical is based on, "The Emigrants" by Vilhelm Moberg, is one that most kids get to read in school. And then this musical made by Björn & Benny from ABBA, and then Helen Sjöholm making this amazing performance.

English isn't my first language since I'm Swedish, but this is a loose translation of the lyrics, I hope it helps those who're curious ^^ Du fördrev mig, Gud / You banished me, God Från mitt hemland slets jag bort / From my homeland I was torn away Här är jag en flykting och en främling / Here I'm a refugee and a stranger Och det ödet finner jag mig i / And I can cope with that fate Men du tog mitt barn / But you took my child Och du tar mig från min man / And you're taking me away from my husband Jag kan inte längre se en mening / I can no longer see a purpose Vad är det du vill? / What is it that you want? Vad ska jag tro… / What am I supposed to believe... Tanken är svindlande / The thought is dizzying Framför mig gapar en avgrund/ An abyss gapes in front of me Hela mitt väsen gör uppror och vill säga nej / My whole being rebels and wants to say no Frågan är väckt / The question has been raised Och nu darrar min själ inför svaret / And now my soul trembles before the answer Att du inte finns till / That you do not exist Fast jag trodde på dig / Even though I believed in you Vem skulle hjälpa mig uthärda livet här ute? / Who would help me endure life out here? Vem skulle ge mig den kraften som jag måste få? / Who would give me the power that I need to recieve? Vem skulle trösta mig? Jag är så liten på jorden / Who would comfort me? I'm so small on this earth Om du inte fanns till / If you didn't exist Ja, vad gjorde jag då? / Yes, what would I do then? Nej, du måste finnas / No, you must exist Du måste / You must Jag lever mitt liv genom dig / I'm living my life through you Utan dig är jag en spillra på ett mörkt och stormigt hav / Without you I'm a speck on a dark and stormy sea Du måste finnas / You have to exist Du måste / You must Hur kan du då överge mig? / Then how can you abandon me? Jag vore ingenstans / I would be nowhere Jag vore ingenting om du inte fanns / I would be nothing if you didn't exist Aldrig förut har jag haft det i tal eller tanke / Never before have I had it in speech or thought Det lilla ordet som skrämmer och plågar mig så / That little word that frightens and torments me so Ordet är ’Om’, om jag bett alla böner förgäves / The word is 'If', if I have prayed all my prayers in vain Om du inte finns till / If you do not exist Vad ska jag göra då? / What should I do then? Vem skulle känna min ånger och sedan förlåta? / Who would feel my remorse and then forgive? Friden i själen, ja, vem skulle skänka mig den? / Peace of mind, yes, who would give it to me? Vem skulle då ta emot mig till slut efter döden? / Who would finally receive me after death? Om du inte fanns till / If you didn't exist Vem tog hand om mig sen? / Who would take care of me after? Nej, du måste finnas / No, you must exist Du måste / You must Jag lever mitt liv genom dig / I'm living my life through you Utan dig är jag en spillra på ett mörkt och stormigt hav / Without you I'm a speck on a dark and stormy sea Du måste finnas / You have to exist Du måste / You must Hur kan du då överge mig? / The how can you abandon me? Jag vore ingenstans / I would be nowhere Jag vore ingenting om du inte fanns / I would be nothing if you didn't exist Du måste finnas / You have to exist Du måste / You must Hur kan du då överge mig? / Then how can you abandon me? Jag vore ingenstans / I would be nowhere Jag vore ingenting om du inte fanns / I would be nothing if you didn't exist

The translation from Swedish to English is word for word as the text describes, when we in Sweden make songs from Swedish to English, we change the text a little, so that it fits in with the melody.

Reaction recommendation: Go Royal - Swedish Fika kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYOslqyqer16nrM It's a Swedish song, but in English with some Swedish words in it. The song has got over 7 million views on KZbin in it's original video (above). It's a light and funny song, with a fun melody. Very catchy, it makes you happy and frankly, you just wanna go and grab a Swedish fika. ;)
