No, not exactly. Binned down is a term that has been consistently used, it refers to the process of binning in general which is primarily used to get useful products out of silicon with defects. Binning up only became a thing in recent years, with i7 3000 it was all bin downs from their HEDT stuff down to the lowly i3s but now they bin specific 13900s as able to clock 100-200MHz higher and call them 13900ks instead. That used to be referred to as the silicon lottery.

A "bin" is usually a storage tub, not a "rubbish bin"; "binned" just refers to a unit which has been sorted into a certain bin/tub based on specs It seems to be used to specify a chip is different from the standard version (ie, it has been sorted or "binned" separately to the standard product) ie, "binned" is not necessarily synonymous with "better" or "worse", more-so "different"

Remember the late 90s when AMD and Cyrix presented cpus with specs that appear- at first glance- to be competing with high-end Pentium IIs? They were considerably cheap than intel PIIs, but they were actually at the level of low end celeron or even pentium MMX. That is exactly the situation we are seeing here: Specs that appear to be on par or higher than M3 Pro, while their target is M3.

Only the latter was achieved but there's also the additional headache of compatibility issues that will plague gen 1. Alas, the smart play is to wait for next generation Ryzen (or even Intel) chips that have good enough battery and much better graphics.

Qualcomm's ARM processor is the biggest CPU step-change for Windows laptops/portables in many years. Moving from x86 to customized, ARM-based processors is how Apple M procs' power/performance ratio leapfrogged x86 CPUs from Intel and AMD. Laptop/portable device users generally prioritize battery life (with pretty good performance), screen quality, and quiet/cool temps over ultra-high performance laptops, with some exceptions, and the Surface Laptop 7 is an excellent first foray into ARM laptops for Windows for the masses. QC's 2nd and 3rd generation ARM CPUs (successors) should further refine power/performance, the GPU/NPU, and hopefully address heat issues and provide better support and drivers. Caveats: Future QC ARM CPUs and motherboards should benefit Linux users, but not with the Surface Laptop 7, which only has UEFI and not ACPI, so device discovery will be a pain in Linux, since Windows PC manufacturers choose wildly varying hardware components that won't be supported. Many printer/scanner and other device drivers are missing/not available from their manufacturers, but generic Windows drivers for these will hopefully take care of basic functionality. Also, most apps will have to run in x86 emulation mode (much slower), while their developers gradually port/recompile their apps from x86 to Qualcomm's ARM-based procs. It will be interesting to hear about the long-term durability/build quality of the Surface Laptop 7. Also, check out Alex Ziskind's review.

As expected, the M3 Pro MacBook Pro is superior to the Surface Laptop 7 in most cases however it is great to see that Microsoft has finally built a "proper" premium laptop that Windows fans can be proud of. You summed it up perfectly when you acknowledged that the M3 Pro MacBook Pro is superior for creative work: video editing, photo editing, graphics editing etc. The Surface Laptop 7 is more suited for secretarial work. 🤘🏼

You can get faster scores. You just have to run a command and then high performance mode shows up in the Control Panel. My guess is they just wanted you to think with the new settings. The issue is MS has no documentation on how these 2 settings play with each other +true for x86 also). The one in the control panel obviously is still needed. On the Samsung model, not sure the chip in it but saw another review and he tested every combo of power plans and geek bench scores ranged from bring 5000 point difference on multi-core, can't remember single core but it was significant depending on the combos used but he tested other MSr ARM laptops and no one combination got the same results . So different models did better with various combos. Very odd but it does show these things can be pushed faster. At the end of the day unless you use primarily a web browser and basic applications, it's idiotic to pay more for something where all your programs "should* just work. Emulation is impressive on both but isn't 100 percent. I've run into numerous issues with program architects errors with x86 apps. Honestly it was 50/50.

The problem is that Apple has CPU accelerators specialized in different tasks, we have the Accelerators (AMX) for algebra and resolution of Arrays that would be expensive if they were run on the CPU, we have the (ANE) and the GPU, Apple has individual APIs and sets to use all the Hardware efficiently and everything is there on their developer site, it is easy and practical to implement.
@JoshFisher5673 ай бұрын
@@SergioWolf843 The other issue is the N1 came out in 2020, they on their 4th revision. I imagine the 4th generation Snapdragon will be better. It's also not fair to test this vs the M1 as it's 4 years old Emulation has really been 50/50 for me on MAC as of last year on the M3, at least for applications I use. THAT'S the real issue. If you just use a web browser it's also idiotic to spend this kind of money for either one when 200 to 500 dollars is enough depending on the display needed. If anything this is a proof of concept model for MS. Certainly better than ARM on Windows 8. That lasted about 6 months. It was horrendous

Qualcomm is getting a lot of flack for Microsoft mistakes. Case In point, I just watched a review on the Samsung with the top tier chip. Out of the box Geekbench results 1725 single core 8988 multi-core Balanced power plan High performance power plan 2929 single core 15156 multi-core So, it beats out the N3 8 core model. MS has some weird issues with the power and. Different options on Samsung ms Surface. The surface was out of the box in high power mode. New power settings get set to auto when in. Samsung didn't have an option for high power mode out of the box either. Had to be forced. Speedometer score was 30.3 beating out the M3. Using prism with speedometer was 6. Something. My Pixel 8a got an 8.6 so my phone beats MS's PRISM so while applications may run, that's about 5 times slower than native arm64 version of Chrome

One of two games isn't a real gaming comparison IMO. You will get drastically different benchmark scores depending on the power plan combo. Out of the box, it still exists in Control Panel but out of the box only balanced is shown giving the illusion that it's the only option and it's not. If you run either a Power shell command or WSL command (saw it on another review) and after a reboot high performance mode showed up in Control Panel. The fun part is MS has ZERO documentation on how the new System menu options and the control panel setting play together. On the Samsung scores ranged from 1100 to 14900on geek bench I believe. I may be slightly off but great to know. MS just doesn't want any confusion or to document things so they hid it. He tested every combination. The main point is you can get better benchmark scores if you do this one simple thing. Obviously it comes at the cost of battery life. I hate DiskMark scores. You don't do a lot of large sequential read and rights unless you are transferring a lot of large files. Most files like Word Documents and other applications pretty much read and write at 4K block sizes and slightly higher clock sizes. Large files like video use 128MB block sizes if I'm not mistaken, which is the largest window does, or used to. Try transferring any data, say 4000 small files that equal a gigabyte and it's a completely different experience than large files. While these are okay for casual users the emulation, while impressive on both, is obviously not 100 percent. This will be a bigger problem for MS as more business applications are Windows. At the end of the day we are at least 5 years or more away from ARM having enough native applications on ARM to replace x86. Probably longer for MS as there are so many small niche software applications out there for small specialized markets and don't have the development time to port their software. They can only hope it works with Proton. My one experience with ARM was trying to create a bootable Windows USB drive on a MAC, think it had an M3. Windows install utility didn't work, neither did Rufus. After some research, at the time it was literally impossible to do so. Easy to create a bootable Ubuntu USB drive though. I just need things to work and to pay more for a "possibility" everything will just work is a hard pass for me personally for some impressive extra battery life. Battery life means nothing when you spend forever troubleshooting stuff for hours that would have taken 1 hour tops if everything just. works. I will say they knocked it out of the park , especially compared to their last attempt. Windows 8 on ARM did exist but only for maybe 6 months and was DOA.
