My first new drumset was also the Pearl Export in black. I was so excited to have those drums. Christmas morning at grandma's house (6 hours away from home), mom gave me a card with a picture of the drums and it said "looks what is waiting at home for you"! That was the longest drive home!

Steve Sr....love your story about seeing Buddy & Louis at Lenny's on the Mass Turnpike. I have the opposite story. In 1977, I was a security guard in the U.S. Air Force at March A.F.B. Buddy & Louis were playing outside the base at Hemet High School. I SO MUCH wanted to see them but couldn't get off guard duty that Fri night. I was tempted to go AWOL. Long story short I didn't see them :( but with an Honorable discharge I got to use thousands of dollars under the G.I Bill to take music at a Community college. Your story reminded me what I would of lost had I gone AWOL. T.Y :) Yrs later, I saw Louis at a drum clinic at Art Benson's shop in Conn. I helped to set up Louis's kit for that night and told Louis that story. He got a good laugh out of that.

I remember the Guitar Center on Cicero (down at that time near 87th street) being chock full o' UFIPs in the early/mid 90's. The Splashes were exceptionally terrific. The cleanest, purest tone I ever heard in a splash cymbal.

I still have a stash of those old 80s era Ufip splashes. Absolutely the best hands-down!

This is very interesting. I’m the same age as Steve and I’m wondering why Steve went into banking for 32 years . I also started playing full time in the 1970’s and was working 6 nights a week. I remember when it started slowing down and guys would get day gigs. I kept playing but it’s still a struggle. Steve is a great player but just like other players I knew that couldn’t make a living they had to have another source of income. I wonder if Steve would make videos on how to keep working in the shrinking live music scene.

Steve, If I’m not mistaken, 3-11 July ‘71, at the Holiday Inn in West Peabody, Ma. - the original Lennie’s had suffered a fire - were the dates/site of the BR big band/LB big band engagement. I believe the bands played the first two nights of the gig which, I believe was BR’s. Lennie’s II opened in Danvers and BR and his band played their first gig there 30 Aug-4 Sep ‘71.

bonzoleum that’s amazing! Yeah he’s got some precious historical items- The New York store are used to have sort of a museum room. Burned into my memory: Louis Belson‘s gold-plated full double bass drum white mother-of-pearl set that ended up in the possession of Sammy Davis Jr. I think ... and an old green Gretsch set supposedly owned by Kenny Clarke

What’s the best kit you’ve come across, Steve. What’s the best value new drums around today...for those who can’t afford the real expensive custom kits.
