This guy! I'm Puerto Rican too, but I have sense enough to know that I'm racially black. Damn bro, black is all we see when we look at you. You don't have to be "hood" to be down or to represent blackness. Being Haitian & Rican (which isn't a race by the way) simply makes you a black man from the Caribbean's.

Remember that at one time, it was a culture no no to let the public know that you're Haitian. Wyclef broke those barriers for many artists. I think when he says being down that he was always perceived as a nerd & always kept a low profile because of his insecurities about all that. He's a real humbled dude.

I know this comment is old but I’d like to add on to your comment. I agree with your take on maxwell’s ethnicity, he is a Haitian Puerto Rican American man from Brooklyn, New York. When I first discovered Maxwell i seen a black man with hella Afro centric features, never in my life did I think he was Haitian Puerto Rican. Puerto Rican isn’t even a race it’s a nationality, therefore his dad is an African Puerto Rican and his mom is Haitian. He’s an African man at the end of the day.

From the first time I saw him 20 years ago, I knew that he was mixed....but he wasn't talking about blackness; he was talking about being accepted by African Americans being a man of Caribbean heritage. Africans and Caribs don't see themselves first by their race but by their country of origin and distinguish themselves that way

He’s an African man regardless if he’s half Puerto Rican. Side note, Puerto Rican is NOT a race it’s a nationality. For Example, you can be a Caucasian man from Puerto Rico well raised into Latin culture but racially your a white man. But this is just an example. Maxwell isn’t mixed, yes he has a Haitian mother but we don’t know what race his father is. All we know is his father is Puerto Rican, so that’s his nationality, I’m assuming his dad is an Afro- Latino ( Black Puerto Rican)

This man grew up in Brooklyn from the 70s - 90s. African Americans weren’t nice to Caribbean people let alone Haitians back in the day. They used to beat the dog shit out of Haitians especially in school. It wasn’t cool to be Haitian until Wyclef and the fugees debuted the score. To this day there’s a lot of xenophobia towards Haitians. Also FBAs separate themselves from Caribbean blacks.
