The cost and Don was anal about perfect performances. He wanted black artists to look flawless. His words....not mine. There's only two or so artists that actually did sing live....James brown was one....

As you know, the show began during a time where we were being portrayed less than favorable by the media (and since we’re stil being portrayed that way, Soul Train still needs to be on the air haha). The caveat to this was that there were so many other artists that should’ve had that platform but Don (and some of his crew) didn’t deem them worthy. Patti Labelle was the other consistently live performer. other instances of live was Al Green, Minnie Riperton, Jose Feliciano, The O’Jays, John Legend, D-Nice, The Beastie Boys, Jill Scott, and The Roots.

Here it is 3:54 am on a Sunday morning 12/19/2021 and I'm just waking up to KZbin with my man Maxwell jamming his neo-soul music..got me going back thru time 1997 when this aired on TV, got me reminiscent of this time when my folks was still here on earth, before transitioning to heaven years later in 2000 and how I had been listening to his music to get thru those new found relationships, and sum break ups of life learning lessons about love... and remembrance of sad and happy times, and those who are no longer with us and major events that taken place during this time period...awww life is wonderful when you hear good music like this..remembering road trips to Atlanta, New Mexico traveling across Texas going to Chicago, etc yes indeed and thru it all still wondering why I never had any children as I near my 60's or ever gotten married yet, but when I hear this music I have to stop and think to myself I was coming up in a time with good find your wife and create a beautiful baby music period of time on all my missed opportunities.. that's life I suppose.. but loving the sounds as we move forward to the next generation of music makers.... yes indeed
