Something like this happened in Arvada, CO about 15 years ago, although it was far more dangerous. It somehow released from the other cars it was connected to on a siding, got on to the main branch line, went rolling down the track and gained speeds of 55-70mph on a track that is limited to 20mph. It did activate crossing signals but gates didn't even make it down in time and did clip some vehicles at a couple crossings. It eventually got to a curve and rolled down an embankment stopping just short of a major road thanks to trees that acted as brakes. Police got called and they tried to pursuit but they were only able to actually stop traffic at one crossing, which was the last one before it rolled down the embankment.

Heh heh. Imagine stopping at a railroad crossing, with the bells ringing, the lights flashing, and the sticks down, and it turns out that it's just a single runaway tank car flying by.
@hrissan4 жыл бұрын
Lights and sticks work in this case due to automatic railway circuit sensing lower resistance between rails due to wheel pairs (in place in former USSR since 1960-s). So if this wagon rolls head on to incoming train, red light will automatically trigger and incoming train driver will engage brakes (hopefully😾).
@thecpmr6276 Жыл бұрын

@NS66776 жыл бұрын
Glad the dispatcher lit it through. And the Grade Crossings activated.
@renegadeoflife874 жыл бұрын
Grade crossings use sensors mounted to the track a set distance from the crossing, and a timer circuit to keep the crossing active for so many seconds after the last set of wheels passed through the sensor. So that would always work as long as the crossing was working properly. It is interesting to see that it had a clear signal though. Cases like this the dispatch will often intentionally divert it into a siding to catch it on a buffer or a derail block so that scheduled trains can get through.
@jacobcornelius12784 жыл бұрын
OdinYggd I was wondering how they would catch it! Thanks for the answer

Normally US railroads do the same, a situation like this it would have been diverted into a spur with a derail or buffer to trap it and get it off the main. There must not have been anything suitably convenient on this stretch of track, so they highballed it through until it stopped and then sent a locomotive after it to take it away.

This is how this happens. There is an operating rod that extends across the width of the rail car. It is attached to a bleed valve at the controller. In a flat yard a switchman walking along side cut of cars as it is being pulled out for switching, grabs the rod on each car as it nears him/her. As he walks along pulling or pushing the rod, the bleed valve releases the air from the brake system. Now the car is free rolling. In a hump yard a similar operation must be done at some time before the cars reach the crest of the hump.

At our hump yard, the locomotive is on the end, and usually has a slug attached to the rear of the engine, for traction power, and pushes up the hill, and at the top is a person. They watch the screen board and make the cut by pulling the cut lever, and it goes down the hill, and is controlled by automatic switches. It is separated into 72 different tracks it can go to. When a runaway knifes through a closed switch, does it damage the bar which moves the switch points? In 1967? a gondola car carrying scrap metal rolled from well south of Denver, Colorado north to the D&RGW North Yard north of dowtown Denver. Somehow the train crew discovered thathe car had bad brakes. It was set out onto a siding (in Sedalia? , Colorado) and the train continued south. The railcar knifed through the closed siding switch onto the main line and rolled 40? miles north. Littleton Police closed their three grade crossings. (The mee-mool lights *(o)T(o)* likely activated because the main line rail was well used and the gondola car holding scrap metal, heavy.) It stopped rolling up hill into North Yard. How did they prevent it from rolling south after it stopped?
