I live in the northeast and most of what we ride is roots, rocks, pine needles, loam, and wet leaves. I swapped out the Maxxis for magic Mary/big Betty combo and so far very impressed. Maxxis were good but the Schwalbe tires hook up that little bit better in our conditions.

Amaury Pierron kinda knows what he is doing on a bike. Won Lourdes in dry conditions, and followed it up winning Forth William in wet rocky, rooty and muddy conditions. Same tires... Magic Mary ultra soft 2.4.

Weird review because it totally ignores the different compounds available. You're comparing a DHF with the MaxxTerra 3C compound to the super hard MM BikePark that uses the Addix compound. The 3C compound is Maxxis' second stickiest compound of the 3 available (dual compound, MaxxTerra 3C and MaxxGrip 3C). While Schwalbe's MM BikePark uses their hardest compound of the 3 available (Addix, Addix Soft, Addix SuperSoft). The bikepark tire is made with a quite hard compound specifically because it's made for people who ride bike parks almost exclusively and put tons of laps daily in usually hard dry conditions... the tire is made to last, not grip. Maxxis' MaxxTerra compound is made to be their do-all compound... much softer than the bikepike tire and their own "dual compound", to provide excellent grip in all conditions. Comparing these two tires is an apples to oranges comparison. You should be comparing equal compounds (MaxxTerra and Addix Soft). You should also be comparing equal casings for that matter. The Bikepark tire is a downhill double layer tire which should be compared to Maxxis' DH casing. Casing can also have a large effect on feel and ultimate grip levels. Lastly... I've seen those crazy deals on Schwalbe's on Chain Reaction before as well... and they were available (and gone now) because they were selling off the previous generation of Schwalbe's old compound and rubber.. before they moved to the newer Addix compounds and construction. The Addix tires are far, far better than than the previous generation... which honestly were total shit. So, ya they probably grip well in soft loamy dirt because everything tends to grip well in soft loamy dirt... but they would be shit everywhere else. After testing many tires... I've come to the conclusion that almost all of today's top tires are great and it's far more beneficial to find a tire you like, learn how it reacts in different conditions and stick with it. Understanding your tires and being able to trust their grip and break-away points is more important than any tiny ultimate grip differences between major competitors. Buy the stickiest compound for your front tire for ultimate traction, then go down a level for the rear for a good balance of grip and durability and break-away in tight corners. My preferred set-up these days is a Maxxis Assegai 2.5WT EXO+ in MaxxGrip paired with a Maxxis Minion DHR II 2.4WT EXO+ in MaxxTerra. And of course with Tannus's new Tubeless Armour inserts... it's an unstoppable set-up!! tannusamerica.com/pages/tannus-armour-tubeless

Ian Wish couldn’t agree more, compounds do matter a lot. I don’t see Assegai in MaxxGrip with EXO+ in 27.5 only with DD or DH casings. I guess this for 29ers only. I’m trying to find perfect tire as well. Thinking of going Assegai/DHR. Currently running Vittoria Mazza/Martello. It’s ok for me Mazza on the front, but I think I would like having intermediate knobs between middle and outside for smooth cornering. Martello on the rear is not great, super easy to drift with weak braking. I thing Maxxis DHR would be more suitable. My bike came stock with MM/HD, but the OEM compound was sh*t, it’s pity they put crappy compounds creating not very great experience from the start.

thanks for taking the time to write the comment. I do agree with you, every mtb rider that spent few years and lots of money on the bike, probably knows the difference between the tires already, in this episode I was focused on my experience and comparing the two types of tires, obviously, your knowledge on MTB tires is on a little higher level than the average/beginner mountain bikers, I was gearing the episode towards the intermediate/beginner level riders

Great video thank you, it seems the tyres choice is conditional and both have there pros and cons. I’m running out of tread on my minion so just considering these options

I feel the same about these tires. Most of the time I ride enduro and more forest-like surroundings. Thats why in autumn, winter and spring I ride the Magic Marys. But 2 to 3 months a year I switch to the Minions for the bikeparks during summer. Noticed the Magic Marry is terrible in dusty hardpacked condictions, especially when covered with loose dust and tiny rocks. The Minion on the other hand sucks in really muddy conditions. Since it's overall pretty rainy in Western Europe I run the Magic Mary most of the time, ... It's my go to tire.

But at soon as it gets a little little bit wet on these hard packs and they get slightly soft it has good grip again.

@@hannes6114 but what about the ultra soft version? it wears off quicker, teue. but grip-wise on loose dusty ground? i will go for the soft MM as i ride in changing conditions from very muddy to dry. and: if i know the weak poi ta of my set up i canALWAYS addapt my ride accordingly. it‘s not a bad tyre at all…!!
@hannes6114
@hannes6114 2 жыл бұрын
@@giu_77 it will work good I think, the soft version is actually not terrible on hardpack, solid as long as you ride well and have weight on the front, I actually have too much pressure in them propably.

For a tyre video, very helpful, as wondering similar maxxis verses schwabe top tyres. Going into UK winter mud and yet hard pack comprising roll effort.

Good effort on the video, some very important points missed so I’m going 👎 but will look at some more of your videos and maybe get some 🤙 going. I saw the deals on the Mary’s too, as I never go to bike parks I stayed well away and spent twice the money for the Super Trail Addix Super Soft, which in the UK autumn wet muddy roots and rocks was unparalleled on the front with the same Hans Dampf on the rear.

Why did you use the bilepark Mary for your comparison??? It is the worst Magic Mary and only shines in longlivety. Not in grip or anything else. In the video you show the CRC website and act as if you are ordering the purple or orange compound, but you used the stonehard bikepark compound...

Magic Mary all the way dawn ! Maxxis are good , but I use them only for rear ( DHR II & High Roller II ) DHF are tragic when holding lines - too open channels but that's me. ( Also DHF 3C Maxxgrip for example, is not cheaper than Ultrasoft Mary , just depends where you live )

DH Obsessions. You mentioned you also tried Maxxis High Roller . I'm curious to buy Maxxis high roller as a front tire because it has high side knobs and is available in PLUS / mid fat size 27.5" x 3.0 " Inches 75mm Width for optimal high speed cornering Grip. How do you compare Maxxis Minion DHF to Maxxis High Roller 2 as a front tire ?
@DHOBSESSIONS
@DHOBSESSIONS 3 жыл бұрын
obviously, the rolling on the High roller is better than the DHF but the grip on the DHF is supreme

Good video my freind.My brother has the Maxiss minion and DHr i think, a great tyre does everything well more suited for a dryer climate in my opinion. He has had two punctures. I have the magic mary super gravity and the hans dampf on the rear. I think they are not as reasuring in dry weather, but excell in the mud and in my.experience.bomb proof. I have litteraly done everything.to destroy these but they still keep rolling and im in Scotland so mud most of the year. Im eager to try out the big betty on the rear. Thats my tuppence worth 😁
