I've just fitted these tyres to a Prado. I had Toyo Open country AT's on originally, not Light truck though. I cut a tyre and subsequent flat on a gravel road in Vic, I was towing but my camper is light, so I don't think that contributed all that much. Doing a trip in November to Vic high country and I just couldn't trust the Toyo's after cutting on that gravel road, so fitted the Maxxis. BIG difference I noticed straight away was softer sidewalls on the Maxxis, car rode sweet as with the same 38psi. Just hoping the Maxxis perform in the high country, pretty sure they will though. Great review thanks!

I know that pain sadly had similar issues with Toyo. Very jealous of you high country trip we have been trying to work a trip the into our schedule but it’s tough. We will get there eventually 😂 What camper do you have?
@Ropetangler5 ай бұрын
Where did you have the cut, in the side wall or through the tread? I would have imagined that a softer sidewall on your Maxxis 811 Razr would be more likely to get cut damage. Having said that though, I thought that your 811 Razrs had a 3 ply sidewall whereas the Toyo Open Country Ats only have a 2 ply sidewall which should make them softer, so I am not sure what is going on here.
@filthyoffroadadventures5 ай бұрын

Thanks for a well produced video, and all your time taken to produce it. I am in the process of deciding on a suitable replacement for the BFG KO2s on my Patrol, which like you spends plenty of time in outback Australia towing a hybrid van. However when home in Tasmania, conditions can be much wetter, so a tyre which can handle some sloppy and muddy tracks as well as the hard stony and sandy tracks is what I need. While I really appreciate your efforts, the problem with videos like yours is that they become to some extent “echo chambers” where lots of like minded people basically agree with the video creator, often because they have the same items being discussed, (in this case Maxxis Razr tyres), and unless they have had a particularly bad experience with them, mostly all sing from the same song sheet. The trouble is that very few are able to exhaustively try and test systematically any of the other options, to know how they would have gone in the same situation. I have been happy with my BFG KO2s, and less happy in rough country with Bridgestones because they got some sidewall cuts and one puncture with a tech screw through the sidewall /tread corner which was deemed too risky to repair. Reports on the grapevine however, suggest that BFG ko2s are not as good relatively speaking as they once were, and many long time users are changing to other brands, but I have no way of confirming the truth or otherwise of these opinions. It just seems to me that most people think that what they have now is the best they could hope for, and good comprehensive unbiassed advice is hard to come by.
@filthyoffroadadventures5 ай бұрын
Great comment and I agree it is very very hard to find a balanced and untainted review anywhere. Most like mine are based on personal experience and from discussions with other users. Have you considered the new K03? There has been a lot of interesting reviews from around the world but it is early days as they are very new. Looking at the tech they should be a significant step forward from the K02’s especially with wet bitumen grip and edge tread grip. We are currently looking at replacements for and while Maxxis are on the list again and the K03 are also on the short list. What type of hybrid do you have?
@Ropetangler5 ай бұрын
@@filthyoffroadadventures Thanks for the very prompt reply, I was not expecting that! Last question first, the hybrid van is a Track Trailer Topaz 11 (as in series 2). The company has recently gone into receivership sadly. As for the KO3s, a local tyre retailer told me a couple of days ago, that they were unavailable here so I don’t know if that is just a short term shortage, or not available in Australia yet (which is what I thought he meant). As my wife and self are in an older demographic than you, 75 and 80 years later this year, I don’t push things as hard as I once might have, and grip has rarely been an issue except for now with our farm tracks now so slushy that I have needed to winch up a slight slope on grass and another time on bare ground it just slid backwards slowly in the dark, about six metres till it stopped in a gutter. Clearly 4 or 5mm of tread depth is not enough on unmade tracks or bare ground when saturated with persistent rain. Thanks again for your reply and I will have a look through tour other videos, as this one on the Maxxis is the first time I have come across you on YT, and if this is anything to go by I am sure that I will enjoy your other works too. Cheers and happy travels

Yes and no. By deflation you increase over all footprint. On any surface you need additional grip, by deflation you increase the amount of rubber making contact with the surface of the ground. It also allows for the tyres to deform more as they move over uneven objects like rocks, roots etc. if you don’t deflate your tyres on surfaces you need additional grip you will be significantly more likely to be come bogged and stuck. I have spent most of my life driving on beaches and while speed will help get through some scenarios that’s not always possible so that’s where you need to maximise your grip.
