Sunday School lesson for May 24th, 2020
Bible Study for May 24th, 2020
Society often ignores and even condones the
oppression of the vulnerable. Will righteousness
be rewarded, and will evil face retribution?
Through the prophet Jeremiah, God exhorts the
people to either repent of injustice and deliver
those who are oppressed or face destruction.

Dr. Tolbert, I am overjoyed with the progress my teachers have achieved since reviewing your "Sunday School Made Simple" series. The in-depth scriptural background information is invaluable bring to light the relativity of our current state of affairs. I applaud your passion for teaching and the call to action for the Body of Christ. Min. Allen Reynolds' exegete of the scriptural text is a tremendous blessing. I will continue to remember in prayer you and your entire staff. I want to be a better teacher and preacher of GOD's WORD. I'm excited at the possibilities of teaching and reach more people with saving and delivering Gospel of Jesus the Christ... Thank You Again...and Blessings...

Thanks for bringing this lesson just at the time of the things & leaders we are suffering with. Especially, the loss of what the USA really stands for. God is watching everything these so-called leaders are doing & us as citizens allowing them to do injustice. Get ready for the coming of Christ. He says, “Peace Be Still.

The church is the body of Christ Jesus and are to be the voice to the ungodly and our government in the world today in spreading the good news of the gospel in that Christ Jesus came to save us and teach us how to live in this world representing him as ambassadors “representatives”. The world is leading the church instead of the church “believers or “Christians” leading the world. Jeremiah did what “thus sayeth Lord”, not the king or the people but what God called him to do. The church is the same today to “Go ye therefore” as the great commission of Christ states in St Matthew. We need to DO and stop debating what we should or shouldn’t do. God is the potter and we are the clay in his hands. Where is our priority as the church.

I really appreciate your teaching. Thank you. One of my children in Sunday school asked "If God says you should not kill, why did He kill all the innocent children in Sodom and Gomer? Need feedback for this. Thanks

Thelma Fine, To understand why God destroyed the innocent children in Sodom and Gomorrah one would have to read Chapters 17, 18 and 19 in the Book of Genesis. While you are stating the God says thou shalt not kill, you totally forget that God is God. God gave the law to man and only God has the right to do what He so chooses to do. We can read in Genesis that God sent the Angel of the Lord and two angels to visit Abraham and Sara. Of course, we know that their mission was to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Why? From every bit of information in the Scripture, Sodom and Gomorrah were cities whose inhabitants practiced all sorts of homosexual acts and their reputation was so bad that people were actually praying to God for their destruction. In Chapter 18, verses 20 -21 we see the conversation relating to that cry. But, God was not just going to destroy these two cities based on the cries of humans. He sent the Angel of the Lord and the two angels to search out the cities to verify this behavior and if it was true, the cities would be destroyed. We see that Abraham then began to bargain with the Angel of the Lord. Probably because he realized that his nephew, Lot, and his family lived there and he was concerned about their safety. Abraham managed to convince the Angel of the Lord that if He could find ten righteous people in the cities, He would spare them. We all know that did not happen. And God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. What is the message here? God hates sin. God hates the sin of homosexuality. God has every right to destroy - or save - whomever He desires. He is sovereign. He is God. Had He found 10 righteous, He would have spared them. He didn't. I believe that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were a cesspool for debauchery and homosexuality. Even the children were exposed to it every day of their lives. We see that Lot was even willing to give his daughters to the homosexual men who came to his door seeking the two angels rather than have them take these two men and sexually assault them. For years children grew up in this sinful state and there is no doubt that the sin and depravity and debauchery would be passed along to these children and the cities would only get worse. God chose to rid the earth of this behavior through the example of Sodom and Gomorrah. Obviously, the sin has not died but there will be a day when the sinner will die and will give account of his/her life before an angry and judging God at the Great White Throne Judgement as described in Book of the Revelation. God gives life. God can take life. It is His to give. It is His to take. We should all be aware of that and walk as if today, this second, this minute could be our last. Be ready.

This is a tough question to answer for children, especially because of their ability to understand abstractly based on their age. As adults we wrestle with this question as well, it is a bigger question called "theodicy" that Christians have wrestled with for years. You can research that word to see different approaches for answering. But I would answer three important things: 1. The commandment to not kill is a commandment not to murder which speaks to not killing another person, especially for revenge. We do not have the right to deprive anyone of life that God gave us so freely. 2. God is Lord and God is just. God is the only one who has a right to take life because God gave life. For a child you might say God only punished a city or a nation for sin in the Old Testament. The people who the Lord gave life were living very bad and violent lives of sin hurting each other so God destroyed the whole city or let the people destroy themselves. God did this many times in the Old Testament. In fact, this is one of the reasons why God gives the Law later to give a way for people to live good, healthy lives that don't lead to destroying each other or being destroyed by sin. Sin doesn't just hurt the people who do the wrong, it hurts everyone around it including those innocent children. 3. Always bring it back to the Good News of Jesus. Because of Jesus' death on the cross for sin, we don't have to die forever. He died to take the consequence of sin which is death. Now if we believe in Him and trust His sacrifice for us we can live forever with God even if we die in this life.

@@SundaySchoolMadeSimple Thank you. I am in agreement with your comment. It's not only clear for children, some adults received the explanation better. Peace and love to you and your family.
