Seat belt laws were enacted in the 80's when the auto makers lobbied the states to pass them because they did not want to install airbags in the new models, claiming the costs would be prohibitive. Irony of all ironies, most cars now have airbags, but we still have to wear seat belts! I believe in people having the right to choose whether or not they want to wear them without fear of having to pay a fine. Interesting to see the statistics if seat belt laws were suspended for 1 year and just depend on the airbags to do the restraints.

I believe everybody should wear seatbelts...like you say, it saves lives.. but in Calif nobody can ride in the bed of a pickup truck, that's the law here..
@keepupwithspeedy5 жыл бұрын
The seat belt law was not always in place and I agree. It should be the driver's decision to wear one or not. Personally I choose to wear mine as it keeps me in place better. Most laws are just to make money.

I FULLY agree with your viewpoint of the seat belt law. I am not at risk of harming anyone other than myself on the highway....nobody! And it's a hypocritical and an oxymoron kind of law. THE prime example is that in Pennsylvania I am required by law to wear a seatbelt in my enclosed vehicle but a motorcyclist does not have to wear a helmet??? Absolutely totally senseless and asinine.
@sylviawald11745 жыл бұрын
Seatbelts save lives, it's been proven. It is against the law in most states to ride in the back of a pickup truck, but people are still stubborn and do as they feel regardless of the risks, just like wearing helmets while riding motorcycles.

Nice video through OK City, something different from recent past. Seat belt laws were passed with the objective to lower injuries and slow the insurance rate increases all drivers pay for. I do not know anyone who has been ticketed for seat belts, I would disagree seat belt laws are for the income tickets generate. Pick up truck bed riding should be illegal unless on a rural road with speed limint under 40 MPH, and banned in cities and higher speed roads. No law against it in Oklahoma due to the rural migrant forms they have.

re seat belts, spend a week with an ambulance service and see the devastation caused by not wearing one in an accident .. comfort the relatives of those who died or suffered tragic injuries that would have been saved by a seatbelt .. why not help yourself, your family and friends by taking a simple precaution???
@24juan685 жыл бұрын

@@24juan68 if there was no law, vehicle makers would not fit them, the public would not fit them as an extra - if there was an option most people would not (nothing is going to happen to me, it costs too much etc etc) .. so the law saves the majority of people who do observe it and serves as an incentive to those who do not, to be made aware that it is a safe practice to use at all times .. I see it as the same as the law which states you must drive on the right side of the rode at all times .. if everyone was able to choose which side of the road they will drive on whenever they like ....... A law is the same as a penny, it has two sides, obey on one side, disobey and penalty on the other. in this case, the law was created to minimize the deaths/injuries which occur when vehicles have accidents. There is an enormous cost to family and friends in these circumstances. There is great pressure and costs in providing emergency, rescue and medical services to minimize the number of deaths and seriousness of the injuries, all of which eventually are paid for by everyone. Adherence to the law goes a long way to achieving this.

Greetings john happy Sunday. Hope all is well. I was just to my girlfriend about that whole seatbelts thing and she said it to along with me that how come in a vehicle you compelled to wear a seat belt and on a motorcycle your more at risk to get seriously hurt because you only have one safety which is a helmet but in a vechile and a semi you are way more safer than a motorcycle even without a seat belt. I hope it makes sense.
@edwardmartinez1995 жыл бұрын
Hey John.
@anthony16365 жыл бұрын
The reason that seat belts should be worn is apparent if you have to witness the damage that is done to a human body when a seat belt is not worn. And even more so for children in the rear of a vehicle who are thrown forward into the people sitting in the front. Its devastating, and you are correct its a nonsense that you can sit in the back of a pick up legally ?..
