Maya Angelou's Conversation With Tupac Shakur

When author and poet Maya Angelou was working on the 1993 film Poetic Justice she had an interesting encounter with one of the film's stars, rapper Tupac Shakur.
Maya Angelou's interview with George will air as part of a special New Year's Eve episode on Tuesday, December 31 at 11:30 p.m. on CBC.

She didn't know him so she didn't know how much these words were right. Pac was raised by Afeni to be a major leader. As a kid, his mom used to tell him that he was so important for the community, that he was a black prince. Pac was a black panther, so he was more than aware of what his people have endured during the last centuries. Maya had the words that Pac deeply felt. That's why he cried. It was like a reminder : stop this bullshit, you have a nation to raise.

Pac was a young kid with an entire world on his shoulders. His mistrust in people wasnt unjustified, but the anger of youth just took him to a dark place. If anything, this makes me respect Pac even more. The fact that he cried shows you just how much he was hurting and felt for shouting and screaming and cussing like that. Maya Ang, God bless you!

"Still I rise" is one of her most famous poems and Pac did his own personal version of "Still I rise" and his opening verse is one of the hardest rap verses of all time. He was post Black Panther Party. He knew what we went through and people then, just like now, forgot that. All he wanted to do was help change the world.
