Maya Plisetskaya about dance (Russian) - an interview.
=============================
From my experience. All audiences are good if you perform well.
I feel it when I am taking the audience, and I take them by giving them something. Sometimes I can not understand, what it is specifically. But I feel, that something is coming from me. I force the audience to be attentive, then to hold their breath, then I have great success.
This means I have performed well. And this concerns any audience, because all people are the same. People perceive both life and art equally: it either touches the soul or not. And nothing else!
That's why I don't like to dance 'about nothing'. Just 'dance about nothing'. Then it is 'about nothing' in your soul as well. And what all this is for?..
Recently some people very often show us: look, this is - ' modern dance ', you probably don't understand. A person thinks - probably I am stupid, because I don't understand. They don't believe themselves. This is wrong! Believe yourself, believe, if something makes an impression on you - that means it is good. If it makes no impression - it is NOT good.
It happened to me once in India when I danced The Dying Swan by Saint-Saens, and nobody asked me what this dance was about. Then I danced pas de deux from 'Don Quichote' - with tricks, with fuettes. All Indians were asking me: what was this all about? I don't know either. About 32 fuettes. And this doesn't touch you. One can make 100 fuettes - and it won't touch your soul. Ah-oh, tricks - how great! In this case you need to go to the circus - they do tricks 100 times better. Or gymnastics - a free routine. They would do anything - tie themselves into a bungle. How difficult it is to perform on a balance beam, it is frightful to watch. We see great SKILL, but not art.

How true, art either touches the soul or it doesn't. Her artistry and mastery of her craft always touched the soul. Rest in peace, Maya.

"I can feel, when I take the audience away...and I take away because I give something back. Sometimes, I even don't know what it is. I feel I can make people to be intent and to hold their breath. After that, a huge success happens. It means that I played that part well. And it refers to any audience, because all the people are the same. People apprehend life and art in the same way. The question is: "Will it touch the soul or no?" And there is nothing else.

I very much agree with you how one's perceptions and experience of the world can be expanded by art. But I also agree with her that art that's only cerebral and not emotionally engaging becomes cold and ultimately an object of thought, not of a full experience. And a thousand years from now, who's to say what from this era will be considered great art and what will be considered junk.

It was shot most probably on December 18, 2005. The program was devoted to Maya Plisetskaya's 80th anniversary.

"This happened to me when I was in India. When I was dancing the Swan there, no one had a question: "what was it about?" In the next performance I was dancing Pas de Deux from Don Quixote with all the tricks and fuete. Hindu people started to ask me: "what was it about?". I said I didn't know either. May be about 32 fuete, I said. And this doesn't touch anyone.

Yes, she is 80 years old here. She is still dancing at 83 (not the same roles she's famous for) still with an amazing body and movement.

"Hence, you can make a hundred of fuete, but it will not reach the soul. "Tricks are great!" -- some would say. But in that case, you should go to the circus, there it is made much better. Or freestyle exercise, gymnastics - what tricks they have not maid! They bend and even tie their bodies! "

That's why I don't like it "about nothing"..."the dance about nothing". In that case it is "about nothing" in the soul. What is it for, then? Nowadays you can often hear: "oh, this is modern, probably you don't understand it". A person thinks: "may be I am stupid, I don't understand it" and he doesn't trust himself, but this is wrong. Trust yourself people, trust! If it creates an impression on you, it means this is good. If there is no impression, then it is not good.
