Lead vocalist said the song was about unrequited love. And gave this quote:"...I was in love with this girl, and she was just a broken person. She kept turning to everyone except me for love and acceptance, and I wanted so much to help her. I wanted to be the one to give her everything she wanted, but I couldn't. She just couldn't accept it from me, and it was that pain, that led me to creating the song."

thepurplefire13 I always thought it was about how uncomfortable someone could be with themselves. Wanting so much to be who they are deep down inside, but hating that person at the same time. The “he” being the narrator himself. Funny, I never got an unrequited love vibe from it. Ironic how that is exactly what it’s about.

I think all of the comments are missing what I understood most from the song. As someone who has felt like the girl in the song, I think this song does a good job of not making her the villian. It provides a good amount of understanding to where she is coming from and I was drawn in by how much I can relate to the idea of knowing someone loves me and is perfect, but for some reason I can not feel the same way. It doesn't make sense, but the fact that is in the song resonated with me because now I feel less crazy and more like this is just another version of love or type of relationship that exists in the world.

I love what you said and I do agree with you. I myself seem to be in a situation with a guy who is a good friend but he feels very strongly for me, tbh he's in love with me and I honestly don't feel the same and probably never will and it doesn't make much sense and really has me confused and not feeling so good. This has been going on over a year now and I really don't know where it will go but this song makes me think of our situation and how he feels

I like your interpretation, and I like the actual singer’s take on why they made the song (unrequited love), but I have another interpretation to add. He’s everything you want/need/want to be…. gives me transgender vibes (which the singer in no way would know). There’s trans memes where the protagonist wants to be with xyz person, or maybe they just want to be xyz person (who is usually the opposite gender), or both. The singer also said that this person they liked was broken (trauma) so it can fit my interpretation pretty well, and yours, and the singer’s, and most everybody’s. It’s a basic song but it’s a good song.

In the late 90's I fell for a beautiful raven haired woman. We seemed so right for each other and were together for nearly a year. Despite our Love, she always seemed to be looking for something else, somewhere else, and eventually drifted off. Nearly 8 years later, she was killed in a motorcycle accident. She still haunts my memory, especially whenever I hear this song.

This to me is Jesus as an angel speaking. I've seen a few hit it but usually only few get something when it's truly meaningful. You can definitely apply that to a natural or humanistic relationship where it's about a male companion feeling like he means nothing to whomever he singing about even though he provides for the person all that a true companion does...namely because the song is not a Christian song. But to me it definitely speaks moreso spiritually, especially when he says "I'm everything inside of you that you wish you could be". It's like he saying this person seems to not realize how in love he is with them and how they seem to not acknowledge how he comforts them when this other person berates and demeans them. This is so true of me. Jesus was the last person on my mind. And funny thing is he would be the one to send a word of comfort in the word, preaching at church, or sometimes in an uncommon way when the person mistreating me was getting all of the affection and appreciation. God is a jealous God

I hear people saying that there relationship was just like this song. You are all missing the point, she NEVER gave him the chance to be with her. She just would hook up with another bad boy, she knew he would be always there to vent over and over again. She is a psychic vampire. And the guy is to weak to let her go. I was that guy in my early 20’s. Thank God I grew a pair and left that toxic “friendship “.

I AM that guy. Ladies, I need to hear more than I'm a sweet guy. If a woman doesn't feel the same way about me as I feel about her, fine, but why does she have to rub it in my face? It's even worse, when there is a mutual attraction there, and you legitimately do love them, but they just like you, but for whatever reason they don't want to be with you, and I know this happens because it's happened to me and the women involved have admitted it. I know I'm being a little hard on the fairer sex, but this is just my experience. I have literally hundreds of things that I've written about unrequited love, and I'm not just talking about music I have written, though I definitely have that. Since I was 17 years old, since I was 17 years old, this has been a constant in my life. I'm in my early 30s. It's kind of hard to get married and have kids when the only love you have is unrequited love. When I haven't seen a woman in a long time, and she's been going through a hard time, and her first reaction is to jump up and wrap her arms around me, because I'm like almost a foot taller than her , and just squeeze like she doesn't want to let go, that sends mixed signals. When she tells you she's attracted to you, but again does not want to be with you, what the hell am I? When she tells you that she's afraid that her boyfriend is going to start beating her, but she stays with him. And no matter what you say, she's not going to listen because of how you feel about her , you can be jealous and still be right. (although I would advise against jealousy). I love this woman to death, and I accept she's had a hard life, but so have I. I don't mind her not being with me, but I don't want her to be with someone she thinks is going to beat her. C'est la vie, mais porquoi?

She probably feels she isnt good enough for you. Probably feels you deserve someone better than her. Woman can be strange but ive seen that happen before and that be the cause. If it makes you feel any better ,even if you got with her shed probably be too damaged to stay with you for long. Maybe im wrong idk. I highly doubt youll be able to help someone that doesnt want it. Only she can be brave and leave him. If i were you id take my mind off of it.

Adam yes you can be jealous and be right but you being jealous just makes her feel more confused and stressed out so she just doesn’t want to hear it from you

I think I was about 12 or 13 when this song came out. Both me and my dad really liked it, and I have so many memories of him driving with me in his old truck and this song playing on the radio. Simpler times. I miss them.

The best thing the writer of this song could've done is walk away. If she was aware, she'd come find him. If not, then he'd come to realize all the angst he wasted on someone who would never ever appreciate him and be freed.

I heard this song shortly after it came out and I liked the "sound" of it. I have hearing issues so mostly I don't pay much attention to the lyrics. What I heard and liked is the melody and energy in the music. What I heard that stood out before was "He's everything you want". I thought it was a joyful story. So Now I read the lyrics as the song plays and it's not joyful end the end. A missed love. Did I get that right?

This song is about Jesus Christ- he's everything you want he's everything you need=Jesus, he's everything inside of you that you wish you could be=Jesus (do we wish we could all be perfect in the eyes of GOD) and go to heaven.\\ Jesus says all the right things at exactly the right time and he means nothing to you that is him, what does Jesus mean to you if he means everything then would'nt we be closer to him. This is why alot of people are lost.
