A duet with Lionel Richie, this was also Diana Ross' last #1 hit in the US. It not only reached #1 on the Pop charts but went to #1 on the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. This song was from the 1981 film of the same name starring Brooke Shields. The film, which was based on a best-selling novel of the same name, was not very successful, but the song received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations and won a Marquee Award in 1982 for Best Original Song. Richie wrote this song and produced it. Richie told The Sun March 13, 2009, "Letting others in to write for you is scary but also really creative." He added that he recalled when he did it for Diana Ross with this song, "I wasn't sure I could do it. What if they didn't like it? The song was rush-recorded in an early morning session in Reno, Nevada, with Richie and Ross meeting briefly before moving on to fulfill other obligations. Richie revealed to The Sun March 18, 2009, that he considers the recording of this song to have been "a disaster."

Beyond words I can't not hear this hauntingly beautiful song and not cry I remember when this song 1st came out in 1982/83 even then it was almost hypnotic in its poignancy in 1983 I was there when Dianna Ross gave that central park concert both shows the 1st one got rained out but the day next the weather and Dianna were beautiful and when I lost my oldest brother a year later this song took on even greater significance showcasing how fleeting life can really be(he was 27 when he died)and now looking back 39,40 years so many people are gone in my life(parents,friends,relatives of friends who were like family,pets lost mom in 2020, beloved kitty last August dad 10 years already)makes want to hang on to what's left which is just the memories in life at some point have to give up the reality but not the dreams and never the memories inthe and that all that's left us.
