In 2005, I spent a month traveling through the Yucatan peninsula with a Mayan shaman descended from a continuous lineage of Mayan shamans. We visited all the Mayan sites in the Yucatan. Much of his teachings about the cosmology and religious significance of the sites was vastly different from the western colonizer interpretation that is still perpetuated by modern archaeology. In particular, we had a lengthy discussion about the Mayan calendar. To say the west got it wrong is an understatement. Mayans NEVER predicted an "end of the world" in 2012 or in any other time. The shaman explained that, similar to Hindu cosmology, Mayans divided up the flow of time into 24,000 year cycles that break down into two 12,000 year cycles. Each of these is further divided into specific eras. In Vedic cosmology, these eras are called "yugas" and are characterized by specific evolution and devolution of human societies until they degrade entirely and then the cycle begins again with a period of enlightenment. The Mayan calendar simply said that 2012 was the end of a 12,000 year cycle. Not the end of the world. This is the limitation of documentarians and archaeologists putting these types of conclusions together without consulting actual Mayan shamans descended from the traditions. Furthermore, one other conversation with this shaman stood out. While at Chichen Itza, NASA had just taken over the site for further study so the main pyramid was restricted to the public. NASA could study it for decades and never get it right, he said definitively. He said "as long as the west continues to view science and religion as separate things, they will never understand Chichen Itza. And they will never understand the Maya." This fundamental difference in the way western empires of the northern hemisphere, steeped in Abrahamic traditions, treat objective science and subjective science- and along with that, science as a whole and religion- as opposites, is the immovable limitation to understanding other cultures, especially those of the global south. Scholar Rajiv Malhotra wrote an excellent book on this topic, titled "Being Different: An Indian Answer to Western Universalism." For those interested in the subject, I can't recommend this book enough.

The sun rotates on its axis once every 27 days. The 13 day cycle she refers to is erroneous. It is actually 13.5 days, which is s hugely significant difference.

They begin with a cycle of 260 Days. Each day is signified by the continual combination of a number ranging from 1 - 13 as well as being represent by one of the 20 day signs. Now the 260 day calendar is based of the cycles of Venus. It was used for spiritual and scientific and astronomical purposes. They also had a Solar calendar and a Lunar calendar. And it wasnt just our tribes but many of the tribes that lived here on our continent understood time through different celestial cycles. The Hopi. The Lakota. The Pawnee. The European Spaniards were left in awe when they first entered the city, confounded, as if being in a dream together, they couldn't believe it. Constantinople and Paris and Venice were some of the greatest cities on Earth at the time and with them was also Tenochtitlan. My ancestors also constructed not just pyramids, but archeaastrological monuments that aligned with equinox and solstice, aligned to reveal artistically and mathematically complex structures. We had the 5th largest city in the world at the time. We had also mapped in what would be greater detail than our Greek and Roman counterparts the stars and planets for only a few a centuries longer. Subjugation and colonization and racial discrimination and the dismantling of culture and imposing another over it, along with language and societal rules and histories retold to fit the narrative of their side was used to dim the light that we shined with before all the other cultures amd customs on Earth that came to know my people after Columbus found himself lost on the contient of all our people.

For people to assume that what they are looking at is what something is without thinking about it deeply insults the assuming party and does not show respect in the slightest of those whom thought of something deeply before realizing it. The people that believed 2012 was going to be the end of the world know nothing of prediction. I assume that most people know of the Julian calendar, the one we all use today. To believe that a calendar made by my ancestors prophesied the end of our world is like someone believing that the 2021 Julian Calander (current Julian year) predicts the end of the world to be 12/31/2021.
