I believe the central theme of the film is that the love and acceptance Arthur found by embracing the Joker persona was illusory. That love was for the Joker, not Arthur. Once he realizes he's NOT the Joker and Harley then rejects him, he basically comes to terms with this. Harley's role as manipulator/abuser basically exists to help lead Arthur to this realization. While I think the musical sequences DO exist to illustrate Arthur and Lee's shared delusion, I don't think they represent a further descent into madness. If anything I think he largely becomes more sane throughout the film rather than less. I think this film is much more thematically consistent than the first, which I believe did suffer from the creators trying to "say" too many things. Does Arthur snap because of man's inhumanity to man (the kids attacking him on the street, the lady being rude to him on the bus, his boss firing him unfairly, Murray making fun of him on TV, his therapist being disinterested and not really listening to him, etc.), the lack of a proper social safety net for the mentally ill (his meds and therapy being discontinued), or because the rich just won't stop keeping the poor folks down? The film lacks a clear unifying thesis.

Halfway through I forgot you were talking about the Joker and was just excited to listen to you talk about musicals LMAO

HAHAHAH I had that thought editing, like this isn’t about the joker at all anymore I’m just ranting about musicals

To me it felt like someone watched Sucker Punch and said “hold my beer” while they tried and failed miserably to make a better version. I agree, this movie is not worth peoples time.

I feel like if the final day of the trial ended with him saying “Arthur isn’t real, but Joker is” it would’ve worked maybe 15% more than what we got. Like… LET HIM BE JOKER! WE COULD HAVE AVOIDED HIS DEATH IF THEY JUST LET HIM BE HE VILLAIN!

17:30 YEAHH as part of an OSDD system I can confirm that that is 3000% not how that works LMFAO. An alter does not simply -POOF-cease to exist because you in some way or another recognize where they stem from. *ESPECIALLY* not when the body is actively experiencing another horrific trauma, let alone one that mirrors that same person’s originating trauma omfg!!! If that scene were to follow how DID/OSDD actually function, far more likely is that Joker would have switched to the front, their indignant, unhinged and vengeful disposition would have intensified even further, and we likely would have ended up seeing a lot more 👮🏻♂️🐽 guts!!!!!! Of course there are more ways that scene could potentially unfold-like if the jangler personality were to split off again, perhaps fuse with another part of the system, fall dormant due to sheer terror, etc. but all the same, any logical conclusion you follow is essentially the OPPOSITE of the direction the filmmakers decided to go with this. *MUCH* to think about.

Anyway, I really enjoyed hearing your perspective on this, and I cackled out loud multiple times throughout. The jinglejangle jokes genuinely had me in stitches😭 It immediately made me envision him in our modern idea of a like 14th century jester’s hat w fuckin jingle bells dangling off the edges and that somewhat soothed my rage over the nonsensical storytelling

I havent seen it but i hoped it was good..from what ive seen its not. I wouldve been happy if they just made a Harley quinn musical backstory movie with lady gaga and the joker in it at some times but no..from what ive heard its all joker no lady gaga?

@@meredithnovaco i thought it was supposed to be about how she became herself. Idek why they got rid of those amazing lady gaga scenes. They had a whole scene of her on the stairs singing and they cut it. The clips in the trailer arent even in the movie…
