As a German I tear up to see such a common understanding of workers rights and the will to fight for them! In Germany a false pride in work morale sometimes seems to prevend this kind of sentiment. You go Frenchies, we are proud of you and we are lucky to be your neighbours!

Tbh, we also have a stupid left. If this morons had agreed on a common candidate for presidential election, they would had won. First you kick our neo liberal conservative so called president, then with MPs you decide on how to acheive the common objectives. But heh... they were not smart enougth to do that. So that's why a great part of French do not feal represented. And imo it's the case. So as citizens we have the duty to get our politics in the right way or kick them off.

The issue is more deeply rooted than the retirement reform plan that was pushed by the government. This tension has been building up for years after us voters had to mostly reluctantly put Macron back in office against Le Pen. The fact is that Macron's governments have been extremely stubborn and dishonnest towards the people . For example, a few years back Macron requested a commitee of 100 citizens of all backgrounds and ages to be formed and make a list of propositions. Out of all of their ideas, he would pick 12 with them, and work on making new bills upon these propositions. The result is that instead of being true to his word, he backstabbed everyone and did none of it, even passing bills that went against these propositions. This is one of several example where the people felt betrayed and that feeling that the government was simply not caring about the people's voice just grew bigger and bigger during his mandate. Now as a result, violence, not only in protests, but in the day to day of our lives has grown and all this tension that was building up for so long is being released. Our media even tries to downplay our outrage as viewed by our neighbours and other foreign countries with the usual "oh look its the french protesting again, now we look foolish blabla", while, having many friends from all over the world, i know very well that this is the trait they admire the most about our country. I am very grateful for that and hope it will continue to serve as an example and an inspirations for all these people living under authoritarian regimes who simply can't enjoy the wonderful freedoms we have here. So thanks a lot for this video by informing everyone what it is really about. To any of you that might be reading this, wherever you are, I wish you the best. Cheers

I was so pissed to see how the foreign media were covering the movement, so thank you very much for not mocking our fight but more importantly for sharing the information. Workers of the world, this movement is part of a bigger picture. They have everything, we only have the number. Unifying our forces is the only way to show them that we won't let them control the politics, the media and the resources without a fight.

thank you for showing the police violence suffered by journalists. It's not normal in a democracy like ours, and I don't think many people around the world are bothered by it. The UN has grumbled a bit from what I understood, but nothing concrete has been done. Meanwhile, in France, there's only one case of violence against journalists that's really been reported in the media, so the government's defenders can say that these are isolated acts and that there's nothing systemic about them (it's been the same strategy for 20 years every time a black person or a protester is violated by the police).

The violence by the police is insane. Even with the controversial actions of the police in the States, ive still not seen as serious, literally widespread, beatdowns by riot cops even during an actual riot.

those riot cops are a literal disgrace of a human being...in greece we know them very well and so in france and many other countries. they make a little over the minimum wage but they dont hesitate to beat anyone who protests and gets in their way. you see them beating firefighters, nurses, teachers, pensioners, university students...anyone. no shame whatsoever

very disappointed in seeing another 20 minute "documentary" of riot porn without a single woman interviewed. This is not revolutionary. This is market aesthetics.

The president Macron I think is doing the right thing here. He has to raise the retirement age to save the country from a deficit/debt crisis. In order to fund retirement pensions, you must have more young people than old people. You can't keep it that way forever, so your only other option is to lower the retirement benefits and make sure less people are retired. Though no matter your explanation, people will always protest when you strip them of benefits.

@@binbows2258 I'll give you other facts then : Only 35% of the 60+ year old french people have a job, this is 2 out of 3 that don't work ! This is caused by poor economics that means that jobs in many sectors are rare and companies prefer to take low-paid young people that will potentially build a career, against high paid (because of years of experience) old people that will soon retire anyway, if these guys can still work anyway. Because other reason is of course health issues, for the more physical works. There are still some sectors in French economy that do recruit a lot, but you don't learn a new job at 60 year old, especially if these jobs are about Programming (we know how most old people are "tech-savvy" lol), or if it's a 12h/day job as a cook in a restaurant. So prolonging retirement age (from 62 to 64) will just add 2 more years of unemployment for most of these people. This will indeed lower the charge on the retirement pensions, but also increase the charge of State social programs, because these guys will get unemployment or minimal help benefits. You will also increase the level of poverty in old people, which is a moral dilemma in and of itself, but may also impact their health and in the end will produce additional costs for social security. All of that, for an unclear gain in pension finances. The necessity to proceed by rising the age for retirement is not an evidence. It is one way (doubtful cf previous paragraph, but still an input of money somewhere I guess) but it is not the only way. First and foremost, the pension deficit is exaggerated by the government, who took one of the worst predictions and presented the number estimates for future decades without taking into account inflation because it makes it look scarier. Second, other methods to close the gap exist, such as rising a little bit some of the pension charges (especially for some well paid professions that are for some reason exonerated from these charges), asking for fund transfer from the unemployment fund (which currently makes a profit), and other measures. For the matter, this is not me talking out of my ass, this is points of discussions provided by the COR, which is the national institution in charge of planning for retirement funds. A good summary of all these counterpoints can be read easily online, I would recommend this article : Retraites : 10 arguments pour dégonfler la baudruche des déficits - Alternatives Economiques That is, if you can read French. I doubt many english speaking journals wrote the details about the opposing arguments against retirement reform.
