This is a very serious play. Perhaps the audience never read the book or saw the film. It's unfortunate that they laughed...very inappropriate, and disrespectful to the actors.

Her acting at the beginning kind of makes sense. Her father was a very proud man, and she was acting proud. She was highly uneducated, and didn’t seem to understand the situation. At the same time, however, she could have acted more mature and solemn. In the book, shes supposed to be portrayed as a sad, lonely character, not comic relief.

This is supposed to be a serious scene. She is the victim of horrid abuse from her father and she knows that if she does a bad job with lying during her testimony, her dad is gonna hurt her again. That being said, I think she is much too sassy in the beginning portion of this scene. As the scene progressed her emotions took over and it got much better, but I was not a big fan of the beginning. Now obviously this is mostly because the director wanted her to say the lines that way, I'm not trying to say she's a bad actress or anything, because she clearly is a great actress. I just think that this scene was misinterpreted... I will be playing Mayella in an upcoming show at my own community theater, so I'm just trying to get a feel for how others are interpreting the character. So I'm not just some random person trying to criticize... :)

I have to agree, we are also doing this show, opening night is tonight. I am playing Heck Tate and our Mayella is far more scared etc.

This is a very seroius scene from a very serious and intense book/movie. It deals with many themes such as racism and femininity....so for an audience to be laughing about a scene where they have accused a black man of raping a girl! WHY ARE THEY LAUGING READ THE BOOK OR WATCH THE MOVIE

I watched one other scene from this production (the mad dog scene) and the audience is laughing like this play is supposed to be a comedy.... :-/ ( I'm Calpurnia in my next production). The mad dog scene is NOT supposed to give you the giggles.... I don't know... maybe it's just the audience that night. Live audiences can be unpredictable....

How did the audience perceive this as a comedy?? Maybe serious subjects are easier to swallow with nervous laughter, or it’s a complete failure of the cast/script or some combination thereof.
