What a wonderful restoration! I would have used a less stark second color than the dark color you chose. The main color is warm while the dark color is actually a cool tone. But I love the care you took is amazing.

My Grandfather had a writing bureau very similar to the one you restored. It passed to my father when he died in 1980. Then my father passed away in 2011 and my mother decided to keep it for herself. This year mum passed away and as I have been sorting through her belongings, I have wondered what to do with the bureau. After watching your restoration, I have decided to find someone to restore it for me here in Australia. Thanks for showing the finished result. Hopefully I can resurrect my grandfather's beloved bureau to keep it in the family as an heirloom.

Gerday Mate, way cool, had me right up to the staining. Thats where you lost my personal preference, just too dark in the 2nd tone. However, I'm 70 & quite often I just clash with modern trends. I like the idea of the highlight colour but maybe a bit lighter. Never mind, it's not mine and your workmanship is brilliant. Loved everything about the resto especially where it's been housed & occupied. The chooks never knew how well they were living. Keep on keeping on. 😅 Peace Out. Wayne

Gorgeous!! Thank you thank you for the lessons. I am happy that you did not paint it because I am refinishing a secretary and want to keep the natural wood colors. I learned so much! I do not plan on ever doing this again so the cost of purchasing the sander and shop vac and spray paint equipment is a no for me. I’m a bit overwhelmed by my pigeon holes! Nice. When you mentioned going two-tone, I thought "great: very Deco". But in the final reveal, I thought it made it look rather Jacobean instead. Still nice, and I'd own it either way, but I'm not sure contrasting stains help bring out its Deco nature on this occasion.

The only thing about sanding a piece down is it makes it look new? takes the age out. even though It looks great when your finished!

Some pieces look good with an aged patina, some look better completely restored. I wouldn’t be sanding back a true Antique 😀👍

Great job, but (in my opinion) ruined by the two tone stain. Too much contrast (especially for the two decorative motifs of the front). Using only the lighter tone would have better brought out the original features of the piece (included the grain of the wood).

Love antique furniture - especially the Art Deco period. This writing bureau has some gorgeous features, namely the carving on the drop down lid, and the base and legs. Beautiful piece of workmanship. My grandpa had a desk that looked similar to this writing bureau, except my grandpa’s was open in the front area where your legs would go under a desk. It was beautiful! I was supposed to get it when my grandpa died, but my cousin sold it along with a bunch of my grandparents’ other furniture and such.

Not sure about the rationale for the two toned approach. I fear it will be quite a dated look, as compared to restoring to a more original finish.
