Scarlet saying she's playing an actor, playing a character who's rehearsing for another role is mind blowing. It's fair to say there's a lot of deconstructing the form of storytelling here, which could easily be portrayed as naval gazing, but it is beautiful

Actually it's very tedious. a third of the film is wasted on useless narration and 4th wall nonsense.

@@adilator it's definitely one of his worst films, but I think the point of it about where emotional beats hit in a film - he gives us glimpses at character development with no real substance (which is a shame given his other work) and one of the most emotional scenes is a monologue by Margot Robbie where she re-enacts a dialogue with the other person actually present. Peculiar and interesting, but not terrible

Just saw it. I will have to rewatch it ...maybe another two times to fully de-construct each scene and it's meaning. So multidimensional and touching so many subjects. Wes Anderson makes you think (while teasing your cornea!). And that's rare in today's filmography.

Just seen it and loved it. It resonated with my brain, I grinned through half the film and I could watch the intro train ride for hours. Some of the most enjoyable pieces of cinematography that will probably ever exist. It will probably take me years and at least one more viewing with subtitles to catch most details and make more sense of it and I'm already looking forward to hour long youtube videos unraveling the different story arcs and points. But even if you don't really "get it" it's still just such a joy if you have any sense for whimsical or were/are an imaginative child. Funny to hear about the General as a performer. That's what I got too but I really liked it. Like that general actually wished he was a stage performer instead and now is his time to shine. And I thought he did admirably.

Jeffrey Wright was the standout performances in this film. He was great in French Dispatch but was on another level in Asteroid City. Particularly, the General’s scene where he’s rushing through the story of his whole life and Wright’s precise delivery really sold the character. I really hope he becomes a regular.

This movie was so interesting. I’m probably gonna watch it another time just so I can understand it more. However, if your going into your first watch I recommend just letting the film take you along for the ride, instead of trying to understand everything at first.

yeah that's kinda what I did. I tried rewinding and replaying a scene or two just so I could get the meaning behind each one of them. so I ended up not getting the plot at all. rewatched it a second time and just went along and I actually enjoyed it more, felt like I was watching it for the first time.

I would honestly recommend beginning with Fantastic Mr. Fox-it has all that quirky humor people love about Wes Anderson, but the story is much tighter. You won’t need to spend two days unpacking it.

Watching a Wes Anderson movie is like watching a long series of trailers: every few minutes could be used as a stand-alone trailer. But after all these trailers are strung together, you are still left with nothing more than a very, very long trailer. The the fact that this accumulation is 'movie length' makes the viewer think that there is something more there . . . but there isn't.

It is funny to see that even the actors struggle to understand the directions. But they are in that movie and saying their lines. I wish I could understand the love that people have when watching a Wes Anderson movie. For me, it always feels cold and empty. I like slapstick, I like absurdity. But I feel nothing. Emotionally emptiness.

I love to rewatch Moonrise Kingdom, but I have to say Life Aquatic is my favourite. Won't knock Darjeeling Unlimited. The Royal Tenenbaums, a little too much for me, but I still enjoy it. Mr Fox with the kids, anytime. But after Dog Isle I started to get the feeling you speak of. French Dispatch did little to me, probably because it's rooted in a facet of US culture I'm unfamiliar with. Grand Budapest is a mixed bag in this respect for me. Overall, and probably contrary to your feeling, I'm captivated by the constructed reality he builds, the stilted framing. It's soothing, somehow...

In fact, the only black actor I noticed in this film was playing a military general - as usual, in the USA, it seems that social advancement for black people is often portrayed solely through the military (and being cannon fodder)

Its very disappointing, that the film takes place around 1957ish, and I see a basically brand "new", mid 50s car rusted, looking like a 50 years old car. Or theres a 1957Chevy on the junkyard, its still a brand new car. Not to mention that did you really scrap american classics just for the sake of the movie? Some people save these cars and you destroy history and artpieces. This describes a slap dash job. Im sorry! Are you really couldnt get a car that was considered old in the 1950s? Maybe an early 20s one? Come on!
