I took my son to see this amazing trumpeter in 2002 and blew us both away with his unparalleled talent!

Where did you see him in 2002?

I have heard jealousy comments for years. After reviewing his artistry for 30 plus, he is hands down the most accurate, versatile, and exciting trumpeter ever! No one controls the horn like that, no one! Saigon Maynard II

Looks like Randy Jones on drums. I played in bands in the mid 70's with him when he was free-lancing and way before his stint with Dave Brubeck. What a marvelously exciting and talented drummer. I thought his talents were somewhat stifled in the MF Band.

Hi Kirk, did you ever get to play with: Lyn Dobson, Brian Smith or Derek Wadsworth?

To my regret, no.

Regarding the band director's comment about technical skills. I'm wondering what technical skills that director was referring to. It's obvious that Maynard has a mastery of the trumpet. Excellent range, first-rate soloist. I think that director was confusing emotion and passion in Maynard's style with a lack of technical prowess. Maynard plays with heart and soul. Sure, it may not be to everyone's taste, but what artist has universal appeal and satisfies everyone?

I saw Maynard and his various bands 11 times in the mid to late 70s. I can remember my band instructor complaining that he lacked technical skills. And as I look back, perhaps that was true. But boy does he give this song its due. He really was the master. I really miss him. There just aren't any bands like his around anymore. Great archive piece!!

Wow, never knew Helen Keller was a band director until now. Not surprised, though. Those that can't do, teach. And those who can't teach, teach gym.

Jesus his range was unparalleled in his prime playing years. Check out some of the recordings he made under the title message from Newport. They are here on KZbin. Fan it Janet is one song, a few others are slides derangement, the fugue and we listened. Well worth checking them out.

Thanks for posting! Terrific extended solo by Pete Jackson. Sadly, I haven't heard much of his playing outside Maynard's band. Any recommendations, folks?

dude if maynard had no technique, there would have been no way he would have had a prime that lasted so long. Only towards the end he chilled out on the high notes and I thought his soloing was so much more mature. I would like to see your band director attempt to play everything that maynard plays and then tell me it doesn't take technique to play that shit... P.s. his solo at around 5:00 is pretty technically sound.
@retrorex8 жыл бұрын
Hey, tell your brain-dead band director that if Maynard "Lacked technical skills" he would not have been lead trumpeter at Paramount studios in 1954-55. Also, I would like to see your wonderful band director play the lead trumpet in Stan Kenton's band circa 1950-51. He'd pass out trying!

I'm a big fan of Maynard, fortunate to see him, but I do feel if you compare melodic content and ideas presented not just the screeching high notes, Arturo Sandoval give him a good run for the money. Especially if you compare them at the same age in their career. I love them both, too!!
