I'm still amazed at how many fellow Pats fans I talk to that want Maye to start in Week 1. The Pats are going to miss the playoffs this year no matter who starts under center. The best thing that can happen to Drake is him being eased into this while learning from Jacoby and AVP. Let's just wait until Week 15 or maybe some 4th quarter play when we're either losing or winning big. There will never be another stretch of success like we had with Bill and Tom. Never. It was awesome that it happened and we should all just be happy if we make the playoffs every other year and make a deep playoff run every 6 or 7.

I"m honestly not worried about this, not even a little. Mayo is inexperienced, but this is one thing he KNOWS he can't mess up.. and he IS a disciplined man. So... one scenario DOES worry me: Brissett getting hurt and ZAPPE (or whomever) playing and just sucking so bad, that THEN there is huge pressure to put in Maye. Even so, I think they'd scurry to sign some vet. One thing I believe is that this organization, from top to bottom is even more convicted about properly developing Maye than WE are.They get it. Every single thing we've seen so far tells us they 100% get all of this. I see no reason to fret about this.

Tend to agree with you, mctaguer. I was careful to say that it should be a question, without saying we should be concerned/worried. I think Mayo will ultimately do what's right for Maye and the team.

Less risky for Mayo to be a little late in starting Maye then a little too early. "Too early" could break Maye and we'll have Mac Jones 2.0 on our hands, the main difference being that Maye's interceptions will get there faster.

Mac’s weak arm was a real surprise for me. How can you pick a guy with a weak arm in number 15? QBs need height, big hands, strong arm, quick release and mental ability to process rapidly. Mac was not an NFL QB.

I genuinely think the panic for the offensive line is incredibly overstated. The reason that the line was so bad to start the season last year is because 4 of the 5 starters didn't play. And none of the backups had any NFL experience whatsoever. This season, Cole Strange is the only injury concern. The 3 on the right side are above average to good. I'd say better than good when run blocking. The left side is the question, but I'd be willing to bet every tackle on the roster is better than Riley Rief and Vidarian Lowe. I pur Calvin Anderson the mix,, and he has actually LT experience in the NFL. I'm not really worried about LG. Even if Strange is out, they have guards. And every expert widely agrees that LG/RG is a very easy position swap

Don't think that's an outrageous way to look at it. They did have awful injury luck last year on the OL. But, I also put it on Bill B for signing Reiff and not addressing OT in the draft, so they'd have better depth. Overall, I have to see the guys at LT before I feel decent about it. That's not an easy switch. Also, not sure what Anderson will look like given the lack of football he played last year.

@thenickcattles yeah, Bill screwed the pooch with not addressing the line. I hope Anderson can return at full strength. He had a good showing against that Eagles front before his health scares kicked in. I do have more faith in the current staff than what the team put out the past couple seasons. But as you and Greg have brought up multiple times, line play in general is down across the league. I just don't think we'll see a repeat of last season's debacle. The room has a bit more talent

totally agree on starting Brissette and letting the staff settle in and work on fundamentals with Maye while continuing to see to roster development. For the Bruins, I'd try and deal Ullmark to Carolina for Necas a mid 20's #2 C who will give you 25-30 goals and 50-70 points and also a draft pick. re sign Sway. Trade Gryz for draft pick and cap space; use your remaining cap money on a top six winger. You have Poitras returning.

I’m big on keeping bill but that’s not what we have it’s Mayo my only concern that he’s not a head coach that could happen but he has brought in some very talented coaches so I’m sure he will listen to the room being a rookie head coach I’m hoping for the best let’s wait and see also I will be kinda surprised if Drake Maye is not starting week one

The decision to play Maye should be proven by his production on the practice field. Not a slow start or fans or owners and hopefully Mayo allows AVP and McCarthy be the ones who are comfortable with it. The thought that Maye must play contradicts the patience in his development as a nfl starter ie Mac Jones who was completely misused. IMO

Agree that Maye starts when he's ready to start. I don't think outside "forces" should impact his opportunity, unless it's an absolute disaster up front. Then, careful consideration needs to be made.

I share Nick's concern that Robert Kraft may put pressure on Maye to start the guy that HE (Kraft) picked, especially if the team isn't doing well and the other 2024 draft picks aren't doing well. BB was able to keep Kraft away from football decisions. Can Mayo do the same? All it takes is one big collision to hurt a young QB. A twisted knee or ankle, a batted arm in motion throwing a pass can REALLY screw him up. Why chance that?
