My all-time favorite Pumpkins song (and I love a lot of them). From the first time I heard it, it hit me in the heart. "When I can, I will". "Mother weep the years I'm missing". "Shut my mouth and strike the demons". Phenomenal lyrics that made me feel things when I was 15 in 1992 and still make me feel things when I'm 46 now. I love Billy's voice paired with the music in this one more than any other of their songs!

Coincidentally, I first heard this song just days after a breakup with a girlfriend I had for 3 years. I didn't even realize I wa listening to the song because I was in such a state of depression and just lost in my own thoughts until the broken almost pained guitar tones came through during the chorus and that somehow snapped me out of it and I was like "holy shit, what is this song?" So I looked it up and it's been easily top 5 songs of all time to me ever since

I remember listening to this song when I was 14 years old. Me and my buddies just got done with a long day of skating. We smoked a joint, went back to my place, ate god knows what, laid on my water bed, I popped this CD in my surround sound CD player that I had in my room, this song came on and we all melted. Mind you, we were all baked out of our minds so this hit sooooooo fuckin hard man. It was a religious experience. Hearing this when you’re high it’s like melting into your soul. Best song I’ve ever heard hands down.

I discovered this album two years ago, as a junior in high school. Mayonaise was actually my introduction the band, which convinced me to listen to their music, starting with Siamese Dream. I loved the blend of heavy rock, dreamy indie atmospheres, and wistful acoustic music. It has very much been an immense part of my life's soundtrack, especially as a young adult with a waning childhood. I don't think any other album, even by the Pumpkins, is exactly like Siamese Dream.
@PercyEllis-qk9qb
@PercyEllis-qk9qb Жыл бұрын
The only album that even gets somewhat close to the sound of Siamese Dream is Nirvana's Nevermind. I say that because both had the same producer (Butch Vig), and both singer/songwriters of their respective bands were going through similarly rough times. They were also both breakthrough albums, and both albums likely had songs about Courtney Love on them.

Ok...have to comment. This has always been a fan favorite. You nailed the pumpkins feel of distorted guitars. One thing that makes pumpkins songs great are how they ebb and flow from soft to heavy and back. You get gravely voiced corgan with angelic voiced corgan in the same song. You have signature distortion along with a corgan solo. One other aspect that I love about the mighty SP is how many of their songs sound just as good acoustic. Check this one out and see if you get the same vibes. I know when I listen (especially when i am hearing it live) when you get to the crescendo of corgan belting "can anybody hear me, I just want to beeeeeee me" that is such an emotional vibe. It's a great singalong tune live as well. As one final note. My musical tastes require me to listen to the entire album. Siamese dream is the perfect pumpkins album. Not a single bad tune. I would say track 7 and 8 are my two favorites back to back (soma and geek usa) of that album. But then you get mayonnaise at track 9 followed by space boy. Now without knowing the background of spaceboy you might initially dismiss. But he wrote basically a love song to his brother that has intellectual disabilities. Maybe listen to mayonnaise and spaceboy back to back to get a slightly different vibe from your initial reaction. Ok...rant over...take care brother...

That weird noise they get out of the guitar every now and again was because Billy bought this old guitar that had a damaged pickup. He thought it sounded cool so instead of fixing it he implemented the sound into this track. Edit: please do more pumpkins..they have an enormous amount of music that you can enjoy. So much nostalgia. 1979 is a famous song and it gives me nostalgia for a time I wasn't even alive for

Glad I clicked this video, great reaction. You actually get it. Long comment coming as SP are my favorite band. I was eleven years old in 1993 when I was handed the cassette tape for Siamese Dream. SP have been my favorite band ever since. This is my favorite song of all time, but I really love most of Billy's stuff. He didn't really miss between the Gish - Machina II time period (1988-2000ish). The b-sides to each album are all amazing too. Billy has written like a million songs man. There are tons of great songs afterwards too that are labeled SP, and solo Billy Corgan stuff. There is also the band he did after the initial breakup, Zwan. Zwan was really, really good. Mary Star of the Sea album is awesome and you should check that out. There's also a bunch of live Zwan and unreleased stuff that we're hoping gets an official release one day. Billy has said that Machina II will one day be officially released as well. His first solo album, The Future Embrace is pretty good too, but is electronic/industrial-ish. Zeitgeist and Oceania are good. Not close to Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness level though but what is lol. The man can only create so many masterpieces. SP are often overlooked and that has always bugged me. I love the big four grunge bands(Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains) and other bands popular at that time like STP, Weezer, Green Day, NIN, Radiohead, etc. but I've always held SP just one level above all of them. The songwriting and guitar work coupled with Jimmy's drumming is just something else. Anyway, thanks for doing this video and giving this band the appreciation it deserves. Subscribed.

The pumpkins have been my favorite band for almost 30 years. This album (and MCIS) formed my adolescence. I've heard this song literally hundreds of times and it never fails to give me goosebumps. Billy's broken guitar is so iconic. If you haven't heard Soma by the Pumpkins, I'd recommend. It's got a similar lullaby vibe that leads into the wall of guitars. Also, I really love your interpretation of the song. You are incredibly insightful and articulate. While Billy writes lyrics that are widely open to interpretation, I think you hit the nail on the head with this one.

I've always loved those screeches he got on this recording. I read an interview back in the nineties where he described his pickups basically as crap. Everytime he'd stop they let out that sound. So he decided to use it as part of the song and just go with it. And if just sounds so iconic on that album. I believe that same first the "Siamese Dream" guitar was later stolen. Also a story on that it has since been found and it was returned to him.

This is such a great song. As a big fan since around ‘96, i can tell you that I’ve heard that this song was already written and rehearsed and they couldn’t think of a name for it & I think James suggested calling it Mayonaise so Billy just went with it.

With the guitar tone, he’s using a 50s reissue strat I believe? It has these lace sensor pickups that just provide this high gain. He runs that through a big muff pedal, the pedal that the smashing pumpkins put on the map. The pedal quadrupled in price after the album was released. It gives it most of the fuzz you hear. He also puts this through a Marshall amp, which according to billy is one of the few amps that can handle high gain mixed with the big muff pedal and not sound terrible. It’s an incredibly hard guitar tone to replicate and drives me insane to this day. He would also layer 8-16 guitar tracks together, which gave songs a massive feel. As with the meaning of the song, billy threw together a bunch of one liners, but really started to resonate with the lyrics years after he wrote it. Mostly about trying to fit in.

I got Siamese Dream on cassette in 1994. I was 12, and my Mom turned me on to it. She was always clued in to new music. You're right about the "tape" aspect of this recording. Big, fat, analog two inch tape. No cut and paste, digital manipulation or other studio trickery. When Billy Corgan showed producer Butch Vig the guitar tone he wanted, Vig said, "there's no way. It's too muddy, we'll lose so much top end in the mix, etc." Corgan said, "well that's the sound we want." Seemed to work out pretty well. Awesome record.

It seems to me the lyric “when I can, I will” -he is being pressured to give a piece of himself, he cannot give, at the moment. It is not that he is being rude, he just doesn’t have it within himself to interact the way others think he should. He just wants to be himself. It is obvious it bothers him he is not able to give himself the way others want. It is something he wishes he could change, but why can’t he just be himself and they accept. It is like a battle between his spirit vs. his flesh (if this makes any sense).

Sorry, one more. MCIS is their rock opera. But Siamese Dream is when corgan becomes the lyrical mastermind. So much of this album is so raw and personal. Disarm is about abuse. I mean Today. Most casual listeners hear today and think uplifting song. "Today is the greatest, day I've ever known." Well the entire song is about corgan contemplating suicide. Call the lyrics satirical or tongue in cheek, but the depth of his writing has always been what attracts me to him as a songwriter. Ok, this time I am done.
