Mayor Ed Koch on rent control, his sexuality, Andrew Cuomo, and how he helped save New York

In 1978, New York City was crumbling and the leading indicator of America's seemingly irreversible decline. The South Bronx, once a thriving middle-class neighborhood, had became a national symbol of urban horror. From 1960 to 1980, New York's murder rate tripled. Out-of-control spending had brought the city to the brink of bankruptcy, leading to a state takeover of its finances. The city's subway was plauged by crime, graffiti, and equipment breakdowns.
On July 13th, 1977, the city reached its nadir when a 24-hour blackout gave way to mass looting. Bushwick, a working-class neighborhood in Brooklyn, was practically burned to the ground.
Then in 1978, Edward Irving Koch became New York's 105th Mayor.
A veteran congressman from Manhattan, Koch's chutzpah was exactly what the city needed. A self-proclaimed "liberal with sanity," Koch took on special interests, he put the city's finances back in order, and showed that it was not only possible to govern but to have fun doing it.
Koch gained a national reputation by being the quintessential New Yorker: A Bronx-born ethnic whose disparaging remarks about life outside the city may well have sunk his 1981 bid for the governor's mansion in Albany. Long presumed to be gay, Koch kept mum about his personal life while pushing for social tolerance. His symbolic and practical role in the Big Apple's multi-decade renaissance is as huge as his appetite for publicity.
Since losing his bid for a fourth term in 1989, Koch has been a tireless dilettante. He's written books and hosted his own radio show. He was Judge Wapner's first replacement on the People's Court. He started a nonprofit to clean up corruption in the state capital. He turned his passion for film into an avocation as a movie reviewer, first for a community paper called the West Side Spirit, and now on the KZbin Channel, The Mayor at the Movies.
Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie sat down with Mayor Koch at his office in Midtown in April 2011 for a wide ranging discussion about rent control, the Tea Party, Donald Trump, his sexuality, whether Gov. Andrew Cuomo coined the phrase "Vote for Cuomo not the Homo," his memories of World War II, and how he "gave New York City back its morale" (as the late Sen. Daniel Moynihan put it).
Approximately 18 minutes.
Produced, shot, and edited by Jim Epstein, with help from Lucas Newman. Additional camera by Anthony Fisher.

For now, let's leave aside the question of whether rent control in general works against its own ends by discouraging development. I mean the kind of rent control that leaves the issue of who to rent to up to the discretion of landlords, and pays no regard to the needs of potential tenants. I believe this is the case for NYC rent control, and most rent control around the country.

@Loathomar You make a good point that there are often good reasons for intelligent people to believe different things and it is unpersuasive, dividing, and even insulting to say, "you're stupid if you don't believe as I do" (paraphrasing). It is worth emphasizing, however, that beliefs, especially political philosophies, which require individuals to submit or else face violent violations of their natural rights to life, liberty and property can never benefit everyone equally and are unjust.

Ed Koch is actually a good bit like Bill Clinton, he's more into pragmatic thinking than standing for principles of liberty. Banning food and cigarettes yet embracing gay rights doesn't make logical sense, but pragmatism is about what is practical, not what is logical. Sometimes this approach works because it avoids having the wrong principles being stuck to, but sadly, the best you can hope for is getting things partially right, rather than completely right.

I was referring to the ideology not the party. Libertarianism is freedom. I would like to know where this misconception comes from. I personably know many Libertarians & I say this with out fear of contradiction we want roads, schools, military protection, police, & fire departments. What we do not want is to be treated like children incapable of making our own decisions concerning our lives. The best way of putting it is the freedom to do what you want as long as you don't hurt anyone elses

Do people really think that a home owner will rent out a home for less than it is worth? Controls on cost always lead to a lower standard of goods and a shortage of goods, as people who should nt be able to afford certain things now can because the price is kept low enough for them to compete. Lets look at computers. The worst cell phone today has more computing power than the best computer of the 80's that cost $3000 back then! Why is Apple not crashed if their prices have dropped for "better"
@Loathomar
@Loathomar 13 жыл бұрын
@sintruder I responded to your statement "I belive any one with common sense would want to be a libertarian", which is a statement I am sure the majority of people in the US would not agree with. If you said "any one with common sense would want freedom" I would agree, but libertarianism gives freedom at a cost, to say otherwise is foolish. You want the freedom to pay less taxes, the government can't build all the roads or school. You may say "GREAT", but most would disagree.

No one has banned smoking (except in locations where smokers harm non-smokers)), food, or salt. As Koch implied it's an education program to save lives. Education is not watching TV ads. If smokers want to smoke there are plenty of places available, eat all the salt you want, get as fat as you like, just don't come whining to the government to pay your medical bills with my taxes. That should be a Libertarian position.

As impressive a guy as Koch was, his defense of rent control -- let alone of his personally taking advantage of it -- was pathetic. I'm an open-minded person, but I have yet to hear a justification of rent control (as least as practiced in New York) that passes the common sense test. It's one thing to let the heavy hand of government distort the market, but it's a whole 'nother thing to do it in such a way as to not even let it benefit those in need. Anyone wanna take a shot at defending it?
