This documentary came out in 1975 when Little Edie was 56 yrs old. The phone call at the end was a conversation from 2001 when Edie was 84 yrs old. She passed away less than a month later. The phone call has about 10 more seconds to it, but this video cut it off too soon.

After her moms death, how did Edie take being without her? Did she miss her mom? Miss her but finally felt free. Her mom was all she had, good or bad. Someone should’ve done a follow up documentary on Edie’s life after her moms death. Her journey to independence and freedom.

I love this clip. I have heard so many people make comments that Big Edie was a horrible, narcisstic witch of a mother, and how devestating to Little Edie. I haven' seen it that way. They had a very complex relationship; both mother- daughter and lifelong companions. Alot of their conversation seems playful bantering to me. I don' t think Little Edie would have left Big Edie if she' d had the chance. Little Edie says it herself here, " She' s so.much fun. I hope she doesn't die." Ive heard Big Edie say many complimentary things both to and about her daughter. I saved this clip. I' d love to see a documentary about Little Edie' s life after her mother passed away. Are there any? I took the road less traveled too, Little Edie. Oh, that phone call! " Al, could you send me something? Some large safety pins." Brought tesrs to my eyes. Bless your soul, Little Edie. Big Edie, too.

I think maybe they haven't watched the full movie. Big Edie praises little Edie all the time. Her beauty, her dancing, singing. You name it, she clearly thought little Edie was the bee's knees really. People take the bickering as reason big Edie was abusive and a narcissist. The close living conditions caused these two to sometimes say things they clearly didn't mean. I loved them both.

Both women suffered from severe emotional disorders. Mental illness is not always brought on by trauma, indeed, most cases are genetic & no, it does not always "skip" a generation. Edie Sr. obviously had completely shutdown/closed off reality when her husband left her. Edie Jr, most likely inherited the genes from her but add to it a Father who seemed to be domineering & un attentive, as well as a broken Mother. The Husband & the 2 Sons seemed to be embarrassed by them as the years went on. All 3 of them ARE complicit of neglect. The Edie's were unable to recognize that the way they were living was not normal & also could make them physically ill as well. But I'm sure the Husband & Sons just wanted them to disappear. People need to quit raking Jackie O over this. She was a Niece. The responsibility fell on the Husband & 2 Sons. They ALL had a Moral responsibility!

Cheryl Lynne why institutionalize? They aren’t harming people. Why throw people in institutions if their no harm or threat? Get them therapy, maybe meds, they weren’t completely insane. They were different (had some faults like all of us) and nothing wrong with that.

Mental illness was much less understood back then. Look into Rosemary Kennedy and what happened to her (even from a wealthy family). There were far fewer meds back then for such illnesses.

@copperbluej19976 жыл бұрын
The sons deserve little, if any, respect for allowing their mom to live the way they were before Jackie helped.
@beedifrnt5 жыл бұрын
@@copperbluej1997 Jackie always gets the credit for helping them but it was actually her sister Lee Radziwill who coordinated the repairs needed at Grey Gardens and got the place in compliance lest the Bealls were going to be evicted. Ari Onasis paid 32,000.00 to bring the house back to code but I don't think Jackie ever darkened the door to visit her aunt and cousin, despite the bit shown in the HBO film. Apparently she was embarrassed by them and felt she was better than them. Such a shame. Though eccentric, they seemed to be good people doing the best they could with what they had to work with.

I feel the way little Edie does, I hate the country, well it's ok to stop look around, take a walk and leave but I long for a great big city with a great big downtown - well I'm yet to get to experience that! Only experience the big city a tid bit. I got to walk a little in Chicago's downtown in the coldest day of winter (thank you X- husband). I got to experience Charlotte, NC for 3 weeks but couldn't stay. Other then that the biggest city I got to live in was Louisville, KY with only 6-8 sky scrapers - not exciting at all.

I've been looking for this film for almost six months! One small question: part 2 seems to be missing. Toward the end of part one, Big Edie was threatening to get naked, and I assumed that YouPrude might have yanked it for nudity if she did. Is that the case? Either way, amazing upload of a surprisingly hard-to-find documentary. Thank you very much for sharing it.

It's interesting to see these these women and their antiquated states of mind. Men dominate everything! If Little Edie could have found the right man to marry, or Big Edie would have got her husband back, their entire lives would have changed. They had the strength to survive on 300 dollars a month all those years, but they couldn't see they had the strength to do whatever they wanted without depending on a man. Today's women are doing it for themselves, it's a good time to be alive.

I know this was posted a long time ago, but the Edie's had enough property and money to live out their lives without working.....easily. Imagine being given a huge house in an exclusive area, and they got $65,000 cash in the 60's which is like 1 million dollars today. An average family home in the 60's was $11,000. They could have purchased a few houses, rented them out, and still stayed in the big house. They had many options to live a comfortable life but their mental illness got in the way. Little Edie could have gotten a job too, plenty of jobs for women in the 60's in retail, nursing/elderly care,, or beauty salon. With Edie background and style she could have been a clothes buyer to the stars, or a stylist. Both the women were very lucky and privileged and were taken care of financially but they made very bad choices because of mental illness.
@Pjzweek65867 ай бұрын
Big Edie wanted to stay in her home. There is more to it than their mental state. Some people never leave their home or hometown. I was shocked when I asked someone for directions once. Their response was that they never left the town they were in. That was just about 10 years ago, too. Fortunately people stepped up and helped the Edie’s and Big Edie lived her life there.
