Hi Peter. Thanks for all the great videos you're quickly becoming the internet's expert on the disaster that is the 2.2 skyactiv. Question for you - I have combustion gases in the coolant at the radiator cap once the thermostat opens. I'm pretty sure this is a failed head gasket due to some recent overheating, but before I go off and get a new engine, is there a way to tell if it is actually the EGR cooler leaking exhaust gas into the coolant? Thanks in advance for any advice - keep up the good work.
@kennedysgarage3281 Жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, you could remove and bypass the egr cooler but I have never seen one to fail. It is most likely to be the head gasket starting to fail. They are a very common to fail, quite a lot of work in them though 😬😬 Just ask if you need anymore information when doing it 👍👍
@mattnewh1422 Жыл бұрын
Thansk for taking the time to respond, Peter. A couple of techs are suggesting this approach - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6DMZZtuer-DqJo where they disconnect the turbo to relieve the baseline pressure in the egr to see if that make a difference. Do you think this would work on the 2.2 and if it's not too cheeky, any idea where the relevant electrical connector for the relevant turbo (i think the 2.2 is dual turbo?) is? Trying to pull apart as little as possible. Would a compression test on the cylinders be another option?
@kennedysgarage3281 Жыл бұрын
@@mattnewh1422 a compression test won’t show it anyway, it isn’t bad enough to affect it. That turbo test might be worth doing, just pull the 2 vacuum pipes on the turbos. But it is still most likely to be your head gasket 😞😞 You could try Steel seal

@kennedysgarage3281 Жыл бұрын
I have never seen the main timing chain to fail but there is a smaller timing chain driving the oil pump assembly & Due to it being smaller it turns quite a lot more than the main chain. This makes them wear faster & very often break, which in turn looses oil pressure & can seize the engine. Change the oil strainer when doing it & it can be done without doing the main chain if needed 👍

Fill the cooling system/radiator to the tip top when cold. Then refit the rad cap and start the car from cold, feel or squeeze the top water hose just for reference. Wait around 3 or 4 minutes, then squeeze the top water hose again & it shouldn’t be pressurised after this amount of time. If you feel pressure open off the cover and listen for the pressure release if you feel pressure prior. Then check again for bubbles from the radiator top. Got a question Do you hear from warranty companies. I shopped around. They price warranties silly money are often unclaimable on. And. I read. Build up of carbon deposits exclusions. I guess you’ve had people trying on their warranty for engine work ??? Cheers

I actually deal with warranty very little, but when I do have to it can be a real pain in the bottom 😬😂😂

@@kennedysgarage3281 I did wonder if you brushed the warranty claims away, don't forget, in trade we all know how well trade-insurance and warranty claims, go !

@@kennedysgarage3281 hi Pete, love the chanel, great job. In my opinion my head gasket has also gone, I've got a well equipped workshop but no lift so I may have to attack this engine in situ. Any advice regarding this? If you think this is inadvisable can the engine be removed from the top if I get hold of an engine crain/hoist? Richard

@@richardbuchanan2748 I think it would be a horrendous job to do in the car, it would probably come up the way alright. It might be a little tight but very possible. Quite a bit of time involved in the disassembly process but well worth doing. You’ll have a good car when finished. Let me know how it goes 🤞🤞👍

Great video. Terrible engines. Having owned one of these POS's, the inherent issues with them is unreal.

They have around common 8 faults 🙂 1. Intake manifolds block 2. Exhaust pressure sensor/pipe block 3. Injector seal/washers fail 4. Exhaust camshaft & followers wear 5. Oil pump strainer blocks 6. Timing chain wear or break 7. Vacuum pumps fail 8. Turbo change over flap pin breaks Other than that they are great 😂😂😂👍

@@kennedysgarage3281 🤣🤣🤣 don't forget the injectors themselves failing, Mazda wanted £4k for a new set on mine.

I still believe that they are a good car just that they need some TLC. Great to see the owner commenting Stephen 🙏 How is it running??

My 10 petrol M3 is bullet proof. 160k miles..those diesels are notorious. Missus used to work for Mazda, is warning me not to buy one😂
