I am having an issue with low oil pressure, again after replacing sump strainer and injector washers, so this time garage suggests engine rebuild/swap might be required. Hi Peter. Thanks for all the great videos you're quickly becoming the internet's expert on the disaster that is the 2.2 skyactiv. Question for you - I have combustion gases in the coolant at the radiator cap once the thermostat opens. I'm pretty sure this is a failed head gasket due to some recent overheating, but before I go off and get a new engine, is there a way to tell if it is actually the EGR cooler leaking exhaust gas into the coolant? Thanks in advance for any advice - keep up the good work.
@kennedysgarage3281
@kennedysgarage3281 Жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, you could remove and bypass the egr cooler but I have never seen one to fail. It is most likely to be the head gasket starting to fail. They are a very common to fail, quite a lot of work in them though 😬😬 Just ask if you need anymore information when doing it 👍👍

Thansk for taking the time to respond, Peter. A couple of techs are suggesting this approach - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6DMZZtuer-DqJo where they disconnect the turbo to relieve the baseline pressure in the egr to see if that make a difference. Do you think this would work on the 2.2 and if it's not too cheeky, any idea where the relevant electrical connector for the relevant turbo (i think the 2.2 is dual turbo?) is? Trying to pull apart as little as possible. Would a compression test on the cylinders be another option?
@kennedysgarage3281
@kennedysgarage3281 Жыл бұрын
@@mattnewh1422 a compression test won’t show it anyway, it isn’t bad enough to affect it. That turbo test might be worth doing, just pull the 2 vacuum pipes on the turbos. But it is still most likely to be your head gasket 😞😞 You could try Steel seal

Thanks @kennedysgarage3281 - yes I tried two attempts at steelseal, once "normally" and once with cylinder 3's and then 4's injector disconnected (I suspect those two) to try to get the steelseal to flow from the coolant side back into the cylinder but no joy. Hi Peter, u mentioned at the end of video the exhaust pressure sensor pipe being blocked. I have a P0472 exhaust pressure sensor low. Is that typically the error code for that? Yes, these pressure sensors fail in every Mazda out there. And make sure as you mentioned to check the pipe when replacing it as they do block also. Look at ‘exhaust pressure sensor bank 1’ in live data on a scantool it should read atmospheric pressure with the ignition on. Mazda told me that the timing chain doesn't ever have to be replaced unless they make a sound. I was thinking of getting it on my 2012 2.2L diesel 182,000 km when it hits 200k. What you do you think? Good or bad idea? I don't want this engine to go on me.
@kennedysgarage3281
@kennedysgarage3281 Жыл бұрын
I have never seen the main timing chain to fail but there is a smaller timing chain driving the oil pump assembly & Due to it being smaller it turns quite a lot more than the main chain. This makes them wear faster & very often break, which in turn looses oil pressure & can seize the engine. Change the oil strainer when doing it & it can be done without doing the main chain if needed 👍

Fill the cooling system/radiator to the tip top when cold. Then refit the rad cap and start the car from cold, feel or squeeze the top water hose just for reference. Wait around 3 or 4 minutes, then squeeze the top water hose again & it shouldn’t be pressurised after this amount of time. If you feel pressure open off the cover and listen for the pressure release if you feel pressure prior. Then check again for bubbles from the radiator top. All this has to happen within 5 minutes & as I said the coolant is cold 👍👍👍

I feel they are a good engine just as you said they need a bit more minding. I don’t like additive in general as I feel it is only attempting to mask the underlying issues. The carbon clean will last 100,000 which isn’t to bad in my eyes. The Dpf will also possibly need cleaning after the manifold got blocked & beware the dealer possibly will only offer a new one 😬😬👍

@@kennedysgarage3281 Thanks for your reply, as you would expect I’m finding your Mazda videos very interesting. I was told given the car the occasional Italian tune up would help but does that really work in your opinion?

@@7thebill it doesn’t do any harm. If it is just accepted that the intake manifold needs to be removed every 100k then all is ok 🤔🤔

@@kennedysgarage3281 Thanks for the advice. I had been worried that the car I bought a few months ago would be heading for the scrap in little more than a year but if I get 100k out of it I’ll be happy with that outcome. If it is the Skyactive then yes, it is the exact same engine. I had one recently with 80,000kms on the clock and needed a new oil strainer due to 1 injector washer after failing & filling crankcase with carbon. So as early as that they would possibly be better replaced 😉👍👍👍

I happen to have it on good authority (a bloke who used to work for mazda and worked almost exclusively on this engine) that this should be one big job ...basically all of your clips and jobs wrapped into one main big one such as this. Timing chain, head gasket , exhaust camshaft with rockers, washers for injectors, exhaust presure sensor even the oil strainer, vacuum pumpetc... I am just wondering how much it would all cost ...everything done together at once. Because I have a 2015 one which needs this...Autotrader says my car is worth only £4400...at 98500miles ...if this job costs £4000than I am between a rock and a hard place. By no means I am disconsidering the level of knowledge and skill and the amount of hours that has to go into this sort of job, it just goes to show how BADLY Mazda has messed up this engine 😳. May God help us all who own this engine...'cause Mazda UK will not!

Your friend is absolutely correct but unfortunately not everyone can afford to do it all in one job. It would cost the value of your car and the only way I believe to get this expense back is to drive the car for 3 or 4 years after doing it. But Mazda isn’t the only manufacturer that is having seriously expensive problems. I’m working on a 2016 Ford Ranger needing pistons after the egr cooler failed, wet timing belts in most brands failing prematurely 🤷🏼‍♂️ It is a very expensive industry in general nowadays 🤔🤔👍

@@kennedysgarage3281 hi Pete, love the chanel, great job. In my opinion my head gasket has also gone, I've got a well equipped workshop but no lift so I may have to attack this engine in situ. @@richardbuchanan2748 I think it would be a horrendous job to do in the car, it would probably come up the way alright. It might be a little tight but very possible. They have around common 8 faults 🙂 1. Intake manifolds block 2. Exhaust pressure sensor/pipe block 3. Injector seal/washers fail 4. Exhaust camshaft & followers wear 5. Oil pump strainer blocks 6.
