I first learned about this gorgeous machine from the mobile game Real Racing 3 and fell in love. In this game, I ride with her. Actually, since then, I only enjoy riding with the Mazda 787b, and every time I set a new record. To be a millionaire, I drive her on the circuit every day. Only in this game it drives perfectly and has balanced revolutions and chassis. Please, please save all Mazda 787b so that they will never be lost and they will be a blessing to all people in the world. It is a highly unique car.

Not to mention the sheer air displacement if you're close enough to the exhaust. 🙂 I wonder if there was a running of the track this year as they did for their 25th anniversary? Not quite. I love the 787B with it being one of my favourite race cars of all time, I even have the autoart diecast model etc, but that isn't true. It never won any other race in the season and didn't even get close to a win with a best result of 5th. They already knew 1991 was the last year they could race the rotary at Le Mans because of the new 3.5L formula based off F1 engines. In fact it started that year, but they let teams run the 'older' cars with a weight penalty. Mazda fought that weight penalty for Le Mans because the 787B 'wasn't a threat to the 3.5 cars or other Group C cars outright' because they were one of the slower cars in the field. They believed them and let Mazda run without the around 200kg weight penalty. Race time came and the head strategist for Mazda decided that since it was their last 24hr with a rotary, the #55 car was to run flat out and see what happens, instead of the more normal conservative strategy the other Mazdas used. It's reliability and fuel economy (relative to the other Group C cars) enabled it to be at the right place at the right time to take advantage of the C11 when it floundered. Interestingly, the Merc and Jag had to back off a little during the race due to risk of running out of their set fuel allocation, something the 787B didn't have to do and was able to run flat out with fuel to spare. Don't forget we're talking about a 5L turbo V8 in the C11 and 7+ L engine in the Jag. Before people say 'rotaries aren't economical' (for their size they aren't), remember it's relative to those much larger engines.

@marks7197
@marks7197 Жыл бұрын
@@devilsadvocate2548The extra weight was the reason the Jags had to run slower, compare their performance to the 1990 laptimes and it's clear. The Sauber was way more fuel efficient than the Mazda, it hammered everyone in the thermal efficiency index in 1991 despite being up to 10 seconds quicker per lap. Sad that the Mazda's success was based on a huge undeserved advantage given it was an interesting but of engineering.
@devilsadvocate2548
@devilsadvocate2548 Жыл бұрын
@marks7197 I never said the Mercedes wasn't more thermally efficient, or that the rotary was thermally efficient. Rotaries indeed have poor thermal efficiency, but that wasn't my argument! Also remember, we're comparing an N/A 2.6 to a twin turbo 5.0. It still doesn't change the FACT that they all had the same amount of fuel allocated for the race, and the Mazda was the only one of the front running cars that didn't have to back off to conserve that limited amount of fuel. Yes, the weight was a factor, but not all of it. The stepless variable intake trumpets increased fuel efficiency considerably compared to the previous year's stepped design. Even though the Mercedes was still dominating at the reduced pace (such a quick car) until it broke down, but as they say, 'to finish first, you must first finish'! Plus, I didn't deny that the increased weight hampered the chasing Jags, nor that Mazda were being a little cheeky asking for asking that the weight penalty not apply to them. But they still asked and were given the dispensation. They played the cards they were dealt and still had to last 24hrs, which is no mean feat. The thing is, quirk of the rules or not, the car still held together for the 24hrs with minimal issues (and minimal engine wear based off the post race engine tear down done in front of the media, they could have put it back together and run another 24hrs such was the lack of wear), whilst not having to conserve fuel in a race record distance at the time. That still has to account for something as it's still a monumental undertaking regardless. If the Mercs were more reliable, this discussion wouldn't be happening, but it was an endurance race, and the Mazda's reliability (and 'relative' fuel economy, not thermal efficiency) helped put it in the right place at the right time to capitalise on the failure of the Mercedes. That's been happening in motor racing for decades. 'What ifs' are pointless and mean nothing!

Wouldn't even qualify sadly. But they could technically build a Twin turbo 4 rotor, an R32C based on the newer 8C architecture. But the days of Rotaries powering the wheels are over. No financial sense for the company to put millions in development when the tech cannot be sold for the public as it just wouldn't meet emission norms.

@napoleon10120
@napoleon10120 Жыл бұрын
When they won they were racing under C2 class regulations, LMP didnt exist back then. The engine is a 4-rotor 2.6L Wankel engine, as far as I know its also the only really sucessfully used Wankel engine in history. It's naturally aspirated and produced around 700 hp at 9000 revs.

@joshbrookes6439 Жыл бұрын
@@napoleon10120You got most of that right mate but it actually made closer to 900hp naturally aspirated (pretty impressive for an engine thats smaller than most cars transmission) but they detuned it to an easy 700hp and better fuel economy etc. These things are far more important in endurance racing than sprint format, and as it turned out the MAZDASPEED race engineers who made the unpopular call at the time would be proven correct in the best ways possible as there is nothing quite like standing on the top step of the podium at the 24hrs at LE MANS for the ultimate smack down to silence the haters, non believers and harshest critics. Victory is the sweetest elixir. Hey, If you are half interested MAZDASPEED pulled the engine down straight after the race and to everyone's absolute astonishment including the engineers who designed and built the thing found the internals had almost no wear and tear visable and would pass as a reshly rebuilt unit even the notorious side and apex seals were also found to be near perfect and had no signs of scoring or heat stress whatsoever, MAZDASPEED announced publicly after the post race engine teardown the 26B PP Quad ROTOR was found to be in excellent condition almost like brand new even after 24 hours of non stop hard racing the engine was so tight and fresh they reckon it could have done another 24hours easily.. It truly is an absolute masterpiece of Japanese engineering. Also fyi its technically incorrect to refer to the MAZDASPEED Rotary engines as Wankel engines, because they are quite different if you care to take a closer look. Wankel is indeed the OG but his design is problematic underpowered and sounds shithouse frankly. A perfect example is check out those old school SACH motor scooter things you see all over the internet lately,, they have the WANKEL design single rotor engine and although it has a rotor spinning inside a housing that's about all they have in common, read up on it and check out the South American gangster bikes, they look COOLAF in a full retro style but these cheeky fuckers are trying to take full advantage of young American gear heads curiosity surrounding the foreign engine design that sounds so different. These things are death traps, mostly 3 wheelers and look like they belong in the sandpit with Tonka trucks, these dudes are literally strapping single rotor SACHS engines on 3 wheeler pedal trikes and selling them to cashed up American gear heads for $25,000 usd 😳😳😳 I wish I could post a pic of one of these things 😆

Thankfully no sign of any silly electric batteries or hybrid system, just a good old fashioned engine, and classy looks.
