Mazda CX-30 is the long-awaited compact crossover, which the Japanese manufacturer probably didn't even plan on making. It rides on the same platform, as the new Mazda3, and slots between the CX-3 B-crossover and the Toyota RAV4 rivalling CX-5. Mazda CX-30 goes after competitors like the Toyota C-HR, Peugeot 3008 or Volkswagen Tiguan.
Starting price: 24 290 euro
As tested: ~33 000 euro

Interior quality, style, standard equipment and driving are far beyond anything VW and Honda do in this segment. I like Honda's petrol engines and VW's diesele but somehow they started selling hard plastics borring boxes. Personaly I was very disapointed by T-Rock's quality and driving and I can hardy relate it cx 30 which feels far more mature and premium.

Well said and agreed. But I'll add that (negatives) VW's long-term reliability, and the refinement and interior material quality in many Honda models are quite bad, the compact ones especially.

Yes, the RAV4 hybrid version will undoubtedly take the crown, at least before the next generation CX-5. I see the NON-hybrid RAV4 models as far less desirable than the Mazda unless one really does need a bit more space. I no longer need a big car or one particularly fast so the CX-30 is really appealing to me - it looks good, is comfortable, easy to park, goes well enough (2.5ltr engine) and has a touch of class. I'll likely buy it if I get a decent trade-in price offer. My only wishes are for the options of the red interior available in the Mazda 3 hatch and ventilated front seats. In which case I couldn't get to the local dealer fast enough.

Regular 5.5 to 5.8ltr p/100km achieveable on this Rav4 by using radar cruise control. Leave in Eco mode also. Base spec, 'Luna' in Ireland, has no lumbar support, which is a big miss. Great over taking ability when in power mode. Road noise can sometimes be intrusive, but it is a great car overall. My wife loves hers.

I imagine that the LCD screen was purposely set back so far to PREVENT people from trying to operate the screen, leaning forward, while driving. This would cause a significant distraction and cause an accident. This is the mentality of controls being on the steering wheel such as radio operation and leaning to the radio vice thumbs coming off the outer ring of the steering wheel and towards the hub.

I'd say it's as bad :) The 2.5 NA (it's the top engine for the Mazda6 here in Europe) is mated to a 6-speed auto, and it's just a dog. You have to rev the hell out of it. They just introduced a 150 hp Skyactiv-G, which should be the sweet spot between the gutless 120G and overpriced 180X.
@worrywart1311
@worrywart1311 4 жыл бұрын
@@MarekDrives Thanks for responding. I think the preferred engine you refer to is the one on sale here (we only get one the option until Skyactiv-X arrives around October). It is a 2.5 Skyactiv-G but the HP converts to 186 (torque also 186 lb-ft), same as the one sold in the U.S. Over here those figures are quoted as 139KW/252NM. Maybe it is tweaked for different outputs in different markets? Anyway, hopefully it should be OK for power, even though the maximum torque comes in at a lot higher revs than a turbo engine.

your attempted character assassination on the CX-5's and Mazda's fun car reputation sounds oh so clever but leaves me as confused as your state of mind. The entire video is full of ridiculous comparisons fueled by an obvious and bizarre bias. Driving a SUV admittedly too fast through a turn then complaining the vehicle's handling isn't up to it, has no value to the viewer. It can showcase your review of the vehicles limits, but only when it is framed as such. Reviewing a car isn't akin to a journey through the aisles in Target knocking items off the shelf only to complain to assistant manger Karen, that the store is a mess.

Kind of agree with you he seemed a little hard on the CX-30 about attacking corners. Of course it’s not designed for taking fast corners as he said. But he also told us the twist beam is less advanced than the independent suspension. He mentioned Mazda was about driving fun but that driving fun doesn’t sell as well as driving comfort. I push my 2019 Tiguan hard around corners and it’s fun but it’s not carving the corners like a BMW obviously. I feel confident the buyers of this CX-30 won’t drive aggressively.

To many so called car experts who are not experts. This guy is talking but he has very little real knowledge. He likes the Citroen but I bet he doesn't own one. Mazda actually builds many of it's cars in Japan. Also Mazda rarely uses turbos as any mechanic will tell that expensive turbo chargers are not likely to last as long as most well engineered naturally aspirated engines. The top Japanese car manufacturers engineer their cars to last 200,000 miles! Without problems! That's why they are on top of reliability charts and have excellent resale. Mazda's Sky Active X engine has 3 important features. Superior power, superior economy and ultra clean burn producing far less pollution than any other combustion engine. If Mazda's new engine design proves as reliable as OHC Japanese engines are known for. This engine could provide a real bridge allowing battery technology to further improve so ranges will extend, without the penalty caused by normal combustion engines. You are a lazy car showcase! Shame!

All the statistics I see are about their decline of quality and reliability plus the astronomical maintenance costs, and them being filled with overengineered sophisticated features that will probably start to fail once the warranty has run out. And, before you slit my throat for having a negative opinion of the brand that is close to your heart, I must disclose that what I've written above is solely my opinion/experience with german premiums, therefore, it's not written like a law, it doesn't have to be exactly like that. I'm happy that you had fun with your BMWs and that there were no issues. And on the topic of Tesla... Tesla is kinda similar to these german brands, as they are quite controversial. I have heard, that they are outrageously overpriced and hyped, however, I had also heard that some people love their Teslas so much that this brand will be the only one they'll buy from. I think slow is advantage as if it goes slow: 1st advantage - it will not "bump" kids hard on their head = safer. 2nd advantage - if you want to take out big box with both hands - you press close - and have enough time to grap and get out. So slow closing - is advantage

Depends on the use case scenario. 1. If kids are dumb enough to stick their heads in the boot, when the lid is closing, they'll learn the hard way. 2. Some brands have sensors or a delay function allowing you to take out whatever you need, before the lid starts closing. For me the problem with slowly closing tailgate is that I may have the car out of sight, before the tailgate actually closes. And that's a safety/security risk.

I think people prefer SUVs to hatchbacks not only because they're trendy now but for some practical reasons as well. Most people don't buy cars for racing but to go from one place to another, like going to work, take the children to school, shopping, holidays... And they want the cars to be comfortable, roomy, and safe. And if possible easy to drive around. Compact SUVs are all that. That's why they're so successful. In my humble opinion. Thanks,for showing, Marek.
@AccuCat
@AccuCat 5 жыл бұрын
Easier ingress/egress, and a slightly higher riding height that gives you better visibility compared to the hatch it is based on. Usually more boot space and you can fit in taller objects. The 3 hatchback's C-pillars doesn't help rear visibility, and makes the rear passenger area feel more claustrophobic. For CUVs/SUVs, the higher ground clearance, bigger and fatter wheels/tyres, and the bottom plastic cladding, helps in the urban jungle (aka bad city roads). They also usually have higher resale values now, compared to all other normal kinds of cars and MPVs.

For a certain percentage, yes. But for others, there are a lot of reasons to get one. I personally have a crossover city car, a low riding sportier exec sedan, and a 4x4 diesel SUV with low range, for long distance drives and off-roading/camping. All to be used within the family of course. Most times when we are in the city, we would all be fighting to use the B-segment CUV of course :)

Mazda needs to realize that moving upscale and more premium usually means minimizing all that black trim to be less noticeable or not there at all. Look at luxury SUVs, most have no plastic cladding at all or just a very thin lip of such around the fender. Mazda decided to go give this car a heavy dose of black cladding....more then any other Ive seen aside the Honda Element....no thanks.

Due to the fact that SUVs are so popular and that market is very competitive this is where car manufacturers put their most research and development. So there is a higher chance that an SUV will be simply better than a sedan in their respective segments. An example on the US market is VW with their Passat and Atlas models. Passat's last refresh has been a huge disapointment and Atlas is praised by many as one of the best SUVs in its class.

Hi, great review! I have ordered a skyactiv-x, fwd, manual version, likely arriving in December. There was no way I could have tested it yet, but I did test mazda 3 with skyactiv-g engine. Did notice slight roughness in 2-cylinder mode. I am curious though, did you test a skyactive-x model with automatic gearbox? I think I noticed paddles on the steering column. I expect fuel consumption somewhere around or even slightly below 6 liters per 100 km with manual. Also, the tech data I got clearly states that skyactive-x also comes with cylinder deactivation. Are you sure it doesn't? Did you notice any occasional knocks in your preproduction model?
@MarekDrives

Yes, it was an automatic. G and X are mild hybrids, but cylinder deactivation is only on the G. I double checked the technical specification.

Volkswagen Tiguan is based on the Passat and is larger than the CX-30. It's direct competitor is the CX-5, which it beasts on interior space - especially rear passenger space. Same goes for the 3008. This is more a response to Toyota C-HR, Honda HRV, Subaru XV, VW T-Roc. At 430 L the boot is clearly smaller that the CX-5 506L (480 with spare wheel) wich in turn is smaller than the Tiguan's 521L boot, with the seats all the way back and 615 with the seats all the way in front. Where do you get your info? Are you comparing with the 2012 Tiguan?
@BrokenFiddles

I was surprised that this newest Mazda is not that great driving car because of the torsion beam suspension in the back. In case of Mazda 3, I read few opinions that the rear torsion beam suspension is so well dialed in that you can't tell. Also, cylinder deactivation in a 4 cylinder engine is not the best idea.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 5 жыл бұрын
Mazda3 understeers, which I suspect may be a way to mask the torsion beam working. In the CX-30 if you push it, it's all over the place. Controllable in the dry, but if someone is brave enough to drive it hard in the wet, it's going to end up in a ditch.
@AccuCat
@AccuCat 5 жыл бұрын
But note of course, that the European tuning could be different compared to other countries. Either for more comfort or better handling. Still and yes, Mazda wants to go upmarket now and challenge some of the players who have more refined and comfortable cars - and that will come at the expense of handling, and even the steering feel and weight. I have yet to read a review on the AWD CX-30, and I wonder if that will still have a rear torsion beam?

@@AccuCat I appreciate Mazda targeting the premium market but let's face it, it's an uphill battle destined for failure. Let's not kid ourselves, no matter how nice the cars will be, nobody will look at Mazda and think premium or luxury. This route has been traveled by VW with Phaeton and Hyundai with Genesis model. Personally, I would like Mazda to concentrate on making best driving cars and for premium/luxury market resurrect their Xedos sub-brand or Millenia name which I believe was a single model.
@AccuCat
@AccuCat 5 жыл бұрын
@@BrokenFiddles Luxur"ious" though is not luxury 😁 I travel to many countries/states in Asia, Australia and NZ regularly where Mazda is doing very well and among the best sellers in their class, and respected for their reliability, exterior and interior design and quality, Zoom-Zoom feel, and growing refinement with certain models like the CX-9 and new 3/CX-30. Most don't even consider the other Japanese non-luxury brands competition for them, and they compete in that weird upper-middle ground with VW (whom Mazda are better Spec'd against and rate better for reliability), and even take some sales from BMW and Mercedes among others. I "wouldn't" bet against Mazda in the long-term, and their plans and for initial future models like the 6 are out there - Google. Mazda are also in a powerful alliance now with Toyota/Lexus, Suzuki, Subaru, etc. to counter the Nissan, Renault & Mitsubishi alliance, and Honda who have been doing very well. In many of these places I visit (and read car news/reviews on or hear from the locals), high quality China cars like Geely are already available, or will be coming in soon. Also, Japanese brands like Daihatsu (fully owned Toyota subsidiary now) or Suzuki (Maruti Suzuki dominates in India), are making even better quality cars now with higher levels of spec/included kit, and we haven't even mentioned the Koreans. All of these factors and a few more, affect the sales of cheaper Mazda models. For example, they even pulled out their Biante MPV for example in countries where those kind of vehicles still sell decently well, and there is no new Biante or Mazda compact MPV in the horizon. Mitsubishi, Daihatsu, Suzuki, Renault and Nissan are still competing in this Compact MPV segment by the way. Anyway, Mazda probably thinks it has no choice but to go more upmarket, but they will probably still have the entry trim to compete with VW, and the high-spec priced close to BMW rival model. Most cars are getting more expensive anyway, but note that Mazda prices/packages/deals in many countries in these region, are better than in Europe.
